- Quantifiers with “of”
- ---
- Any teacher can help you with that.
- Any of the teachers at Stafford House can help you with that.
- Most Americans speak English.
- Most of the Americans here speak Spanish.
- Some friends are more important than others.
- Some of my friends are computer programmers.
- ---
- Most quantifiers can be used with or without “of”.
- We use “of” when the noun is specific (with “the”, a possessive, or a demonstrative)
- “All” can be with or without “of” for specific nouns:
- All of my friends are nice. / All my friends are nice.
- “A couple” can use “of” even with nonspecific nouns:
- There are still a couple of people here. / There are still a couple people here.
- ---
- Some quantifiers always use “of”:
- A lot of people are sick today.
- A great deal of money was spent.
- There are still a number of problems with this.
- ---
- p. 365 exercise 9 - Complete the sentences with the quantifier or with the quantifier + “of”.
- (Do not add “the” if it isn’t already there. Only the quantifier and, sometimes, “of”.)
- 1 All
- 2 Almost all
- 3 Most
- 4 much of
- 5 A great deal of
- 6 Some of
- 7 any of
- 8 little of
- 9 no
- ---
- Game - Roll and move to that quantifier square. Then draw a noun card and make a sentence using that noun and that quantifier. If it’s correct, stay on your square. If it’s wrong (or you can’t think of a sentence), go back to your original square.
- - You do not need to use the quantifier for the noun you picked, you just need to use that quantifier and that noun somewhere in the same sentence.
