- Fire Hose Basics
- Fire Hose Tools and Appliances - Basic Information - Couplings - Rolls
- Only used for firefighting, smooth lining and durable material
- Outer jacket can be made out of cotton
- Must be able to withstand high presure with a minimal loss of water
- 4 Classifications
- Woven jacket - Attack
- Rubber Covered -
- Braided - Boosters and Extinguishers
- Wrapped
- Different sizes = different purposes
- length of hose sometimes called 'sections'
- Mechanical, thermal and chemical damage present to fire hoses
- Hoses should be washed to the material standards
- Woven hoses should be rinsed and brushed out. If oil, used mild soap and detergent
- Rubber type hoses and synthetic type hoses can be put back without drying
- After cleaning and drying hoses must be put in racks
- Fire house couplings;
- Couplings made out of durable alloys such as brass, aluminum and magnesium
- Threaded couplings are 3 - 5 pieces
- Screw type couplings may have Higby cuts to prevent crossthreading
- You can tighten connections by hand or spanner wrench
- stores type couplings have no female or male lugs, they interlock with 1/3 turns
- Expansion ring gaskets are used at the end of the hose where it is expanded into the coupling
- The swivel gasket should be tested regularly for gasket defects. squeeze it and let go to see if it returns to its original shape
- Couplings can be ruined if threads get damaged or the swivel get bent
- Carry couplings, avoid dragging or dropping them
- Examine couplings, remove gasket and clean regularly, remove gasket and clean the threads.
- Hose appliances and tools
- Appliances - Devices that water flow through.
- Valve devices allow split a line or allow two
- A syamese appliance is the opposite of a Y line, forms two together to form a larger discharge
- A variety of hydrant valves
- Reducers
- Allow a smaller hose line to be adapted to a larger one
- Elbows change dirction of flow
- hose caps close off male couplings
- Hose tools;
- Do not ahve water flowing through them
- Hose rollers or hoists
- Hose clamps that close flow within a hose line
- Hydrant wrenches used to remove caps from hydrants
- Ruber mallet
- Hose ramp
- Chaving blocks
- hose straps and ropes used to carry and pull firehoses useful for also handling pressurized hoses
- Three hose roll methods
- Straight roll-- start at one end usually male coupling and rolling to the other end. when finished the female end is exposed and the male is at the center
- Donut roll - When finished both ends are at the outside of the roll. Start the roll five or six feet from the center, rolling towards the female end. leave enough room in the center for carrying
- The self locking twin donut roll
