  1. (2:02:54 AM) dis_astranagant: welp, it hangs on the opening splash screen, with the window half offscreen and a lua panic on stderr
  2. (2:03:00 AM) dis_astranagant: PANIC: unprotected error in call to Lua API (Unable to initialize: attempt to call a string value)
  3. (2:05:23 AM) johnny0: system?
  4. (2:05:55 AM) dis_astranagant: windows 7
  5. (2:06:06 AM) dis_astranagant: worked fine last version
  6. (2:06:35 AM) dis_astranagant: well, other than that damnable particle error spamming the log and bogging everything down
  7. (2:08:32 AM) johnny0: another user had a similar problem -- did a video driver update and everything worked
  8. (2:08:42 AM) dis_astranagant: hmmm
  9. (2:08:52 AM) johnny0: what kind of video card do you have?
  10. (2:08:58 AM) dis_astranagant: just did that last week for the borderlands 2 patch
  11. (2:09:07 AM) dis_astranagant: an ancient nvidea one
  12. (2:09:11 AM) dis_astranagant: 7900GS
  13. (2:09:49 AM) johnny0: hmm, that should be new enough to be honest
  14. (2:09:51 AM) dis_astranagant: tried deleting my old %USER%/t-engine/ but that didn't work
  15. (2:10:24 AM) johnny0: do you still have the old version?
  16. (2:10:33 AM) dis_astranagant: probably
  17. (2:10:35 AM) johnny0: try running it and disabling shaders
  18. (2:10:45 AM) johnny0: should be in options -> video options
  19. (2:11:05 AM) johnny0: then try loading up the new beta
  20. (2:11:34 AM) dis_astranagant: k
  21. (2:11:41 AM) dis_astranagant: 42 loads right up
  22. (2:13:03 AM) dis_astranagant: and 43 still hangs even with shaders off
  23. (2:13:22 AM) johnny0: hmm
  24. (2:13:44 AM) johnny0: when does it hang? on load?
  25. (2:13:58 AM) dis_astranagant: yeah, that first loading screen
  26. (2:14:03 AM) dis_astranagant: before the main menu
  27. (2:14:30 AM) dis_astranagant: sits and chews 1 processor and stops responding
  28. (2:14:44 AM) johnny0: do you get the splash artwork? or a black screen?
  29. (2:15:04 AM) dis_astranagant: art pops up, bar doesn't move
  30. (2:16:25 AM) dis_astranagant: if I click away it does all the usual windowing issues of a hung game
  31. (2:16:58 AM) johnny0: hmm
  32. (2:17:38 AM) dis_astranagant: Module mismatch engine version boot-0.9.40 using engine te4-0.9.40
  33. (2:17:47 AM) dis_astranagant: saw that in te4-log.txt
  34. (2:18:16 AM) johnny0: let me check my te4-log.txt real quick
  35. (2:18:56 AM) johnny0: alright, that looks like a non-fatal error
  36. (2:19:47 AM) johnny0: can you load up a command prompt, cd to your t-engine4-windows-1.0.0beta43 directory
  37. (2:19:57 AM) johnny0: and run "t-engine --flush-stdout"
  38. (2:20:23 AM) dis_astranagant: alright
  39. (2:20:40 AM) johnny0: with this if the program hangs and you have to force quit it, you have a chance at seeing what actually causes it
  40. (2:21:17 AM) dis_astranagant: Creating module example_realtime :: (as di
  41. (2:21:24 AM) dis_astranagant: is what it's currently sitting on before I kill it
  42. (2:21:25 AM) johnny0: after the program freezes, load up the te4_log.txt file and let me know if you see anything at the bottom of it like "LUA ERROR:..."
  43. (2:21:45 AM) johnny0: yeah that's why we have to do the --flush-stdout option
  44. (2:21:47 AM) dis_astranagant: it's been sitting on that for a couple minutes now
  45. (2:22:21 AM) johnny0: the game will run slower with that option, but you don't get stuck with half-messages in the log file
  46. (2:22:41 AM) johnny0: (when we get the game running fine for you that option can be disabled)
  47. (2:24:41 AM) dis_astranagant: grepped it for error and exception, no dice
  48. (2:24:55 AM) dis_astranagant: Make wait background texture 2 : 1440x810 (2048, 1024)
  49. (2:24:55 AM) dis_astranagant: Using cached font /data/font/DroidSans.ttf 12
  50. (2:24:55 AM) dis_astranagant: [ONLINE PROFILE] current character game did not tell us
  51. (2:24:55 AM) dis_astranagant: [ENGINE] Switching to realtime, interval 125 ms
  52. (2:24:55 AM) dis_astranagant: [PROFILE THREAD] batching CSETs
  53. (2:25:04 AM) dis_astranagant: is where it's chillin now
  54. (2:25:22 AM) dis_astranagant: hasn't put anything else there in a couple minutes
  55. (2:26:35 AM) johnny0: well, since you have a graphics card that should be up to the task and a recent driver, the game *should* be okay (especially since the last beta worked fine for you)
  56. (2:26:40 AM) johnny0: a couple more questions though
  57. (2:26:42 AM) dis_astranagant: actually it did put more in
  58. (2:26:49 AM) dis_astranagant: just pings to the server
  59. (2:27:09 AM) dis_astranagant: fire away
  60. (2:27:10 AM) johnny0: what is the size of the zip file you downloaded?
  61. (2:27:27 AM) johnny0: mine is 190,234 KB listed in explorer
  62. (2:27:38 AM) dis_astranagant: same
  63. (2:28:11 AM) johnny0: okay, if you didn't get errors when unzipping, the file is probably fine
  64. (2:28:15 AM) johnny0: http://forums.te4.org/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=31549&p=140430#p140430
  65. (2:29:29 AM) johnny0: in your beta43 directory, blast out your t-engine.exe and .dll files
  66. (2:29:38 AM) johnny0: and try that latest development build
  67. (2:30:07 AM) johnny0: (unzip it into the beta43 directory and run t-engine-####.exe)
  68. (2:30:17 AM) dis_astranagant: still hangs
  69. (2:31:09 AM) johnny0: damn
  70. (2:31:31 AM) dis_astranagant: nothing new or exciting in the log, either
  71. (2:32:49 AM) HousePet: :(
  72. (2:33:32 AM) johnny0: considering b42 worked fine for you it really seems like you may have gotten a bad download of b43
  73. (2:33:36 AM) dis_astranagant: well, a 2.6 second ping is pretty @_@
  74. (2:34:47 AM) johnny0: do you have a md5 checksum tool?
  75. (2:34:55 AM) johnny0: i'm not sure if win7 comes with one
  76. (2:35:19 AM) dis_astranagant: was just gonna check that
  77. (2:35:32 AM) dis_astranagant: already started downloading the game again just in case
  78. (2:36:29 AM) johnny0: be85e360a3f06613ac2aed26e76b99db
  79. (2:37:12 AM) johnny0: is my md5sum for t-engine4-windows-1.0.0beta43.zip
  80. (2:40:42 AM) dis_astranagant: be85e360a3f06613ac2aed26e76b99db
  81. (2:40:53 AM) dis_astranagant: file's fine
  82. (2:44:11 AM) johnny0: ack... i'm not sure what the problem is then
  83. (2:45:06 AM) johnny0: could you run the game with --flush-stdout one more time and throw up your te4_log.txt on pastebin?
  84. (2:46:32 AM) dis_astranagant: can I just toss up my last one :v
  85. (2:46:40 AM) johnny0: heheh, sure
  86. (2:47:15 AM) dis_astranagant: oh it's even still running so you get fresh batshit pings at the end
  87. (2:47:59 AM) dis_astranagant: http://pastebin.com/59129iBc
  88. (2:48:05 AM) johnny0: thanks
  89. (2:48:57 AM) johnny0: sdl_load_image error in IMG_Load_RW: Passed a NULL data source
  90. (2:49:19 AM) dis_astranagant: hmmm
  91. (2:49:22 AM) johnny0: that was my fear
  92. (2:51:15 AM) dis_astranagant: so why is it sending bullshit to SDL?
  93. (2:51:35 AM) dis_astranagant: or is that SDL sending it bullshit
  94. (2:52:38 AM) johnny0: it almost sounds like there's a .png file missing
  95. (2:53:25 AM) johnny0: let me try something real quick
  96. (3:00:23 AM) johnny0: i honestly don't know what you're getting that SDL error... my guess would be something to do with the way tome/windows7 interact with file paths
  97. (3:00:35 AM) johnny0: but i think a lot of people have no trouble running under windows 7
  98. (3:00:39 AM) HousePet: ya
  99. (3:00:50 AM) johnny0: what kind of drive is your I drive?
  100. (3:01:03 AM) johnny0: a regular hard drive? or a usb stick?
  101. (3:01:33 AM) dis_astranagant: just a regular old internal sata drive
  102. (3:01:52 AM) johnny0: ntfs?
  103. (3:01:55 AM) dis_astranagant: spinning platters, just checked their SMART status because I'm paranoid
  104. (3:01:56 AM) dis_astranagant: yep
  105. (3:02:03 AM) johnny0: encrypted?
  106. (3:02:07 AM) dis_astranagant: neg
  107. (3:02:13 AM) dis_astranagant: not that paranoid
  108. (3:02:17 AM) johnny0: hahaha
  109. (3:02:23 AM) johnny0: tbh it shouldn't matter anyway
  110. (3:02:35 AM) dis_astranagant: the epic latency might
  111. (3:02:55 AM) johnny0: just getting to the main screen the latency shouldn't matter
  112. (3:03:01 AM) dis_astranagant: true
  113. (3:03:27 AM) dis_astranagant: though it would probably take an hour just to handle the logging on the way
  114. (3:03:59 AM) johnny0: if you wiped out your Users/usersname/T-Engine folder it shouldn't even bother with validating
  115. (3:04:17 AM) johnny0: since your profile would be disabled
  116. (3:04:49 AM) dis_astranagant: well I did sign in when I fired out 42, but it shouldn't matter
  117. (3:05:04 AM) dis_astranagant: it was hanging with an empty folder before that
  118. (3:07:41 AM) johnny0: hmm, did you extract the new zip you downloaded?
  119. (3:07:56 AM) johnny0: or did you not bother since the old one's MD5 was okay
  120. (3:07:59 AM) dis_astranagant: stopped downloading it when I saw our md5s matched
  121. (3:08:16 AM) johnny0: just for giggles, try extracting the zip to a new folder
  122. (3:09:24 AM) johnny0: it just feels like there is content missing (since both exe's error out)
  123. (3:09:34 AM) onyhow: huh
  124. (3:09:36 AM) onyhow: b44...
  125. (3:09:51 AM) dis_astranagant: not sure what the odds of an md5 collision that doesn't break the crc are but it's gotta be somewhere in the range of one in graham's number
  126. (3:10:32 AM) johnny0: i was thinking more along the lines that the extraction operation was cancelled before it was complete
  127. (3:10:50 AM) johnny0: or everything but one folder was dragged, etc.
  128. (3:10:50 AM) dis_astranagant: nah, 7zip would have thrown a fit first
  129. (3:11:31 AM) dis_astranagant: no dragging, right click, 7zip, extract to
  130. (3:13:17 AM) dis_astranagant: what's really strange is that 43's window is in a different position and possibly a different size than 42's
  131. (3:13:54 AM) dis_astranagant: and neither of the are the faux fullscreen it used to spit at me
  132. (3:14:22 AM) johnny0: yeah, the window position is different between b42 and b43 for me
  133. (3:14:52 AM) dis_astranagant: still hanging, no SDL error this time
  134. (3:15:21 AM) johnny0: yeah, that .zip i linked earlier has that check compiled in
  135. (3:15:31 AM) dis_astranagant: oh
  136. (3:15:54 AM) johnny0: well, i don't know what else to say -- this sucks :[
  137. (3:16:51 AM) johnny0: Maybe Darkgod has seen this sort of error before, but it's completely bizarre that b42 would work while b43 did not (esp. since we tried the standard and newer SDL libraries)
  138. (3:17:12 AM) dis_astranagant: new exe, same hang, same sdl error
  139. (3:18:03 AM) HousePet: i'm probably completely clueless here, but didn't i hear something about pngs being handled differently now?
  140. (3:19:29 AM) johnny0: in a "recent" svn commit DG changed the code to be compatible with newer versions of SDL/SDL_image
  141. (3:20:33 AM) johnny0: the error that's being thrown sounds like the background png can't be loaded since a file handle is never being passed to it (instead, null is being passed)
  142. (3:20:44 AM) johnny0: which is another problem entirely :]
  143. (3:21:34 AM) johnny0: either the null should never be fed in or the SDL error should be handled more gracefully (like closing the window and dumping the error to the log)
  144. (3:22:21 AM) johnny0: in any case, sorry that we couldn't get b43 running for you dis_astranagant
  145. (3:22:26 AM) dis_astranagant: welp
  146. (3:23:07 AM) johnny0: if you really want to play you could try getting an SVN copy
  147. (3:23:10 AM) dis_astranagant: it does appear to be running the chat and other assorted bullshit though I can't actually see it outside of what hits the log
  148. (3:24:25 AM) johnny0: oh you know what
  149. (3:24:29 AM) johnny0: let me try one more thing...
  150. (3:27:12 AM) dis_astranagant: got a link to the repo? I'm getting tempted to build the damn thing myself
  151. (3:31:07 AM) johnny0: http://te4.org/wiki/howtosvn
  152. (3:31:51 AM) johnny0: getting a compiling environment for windows is somewhat silly, so i'd recommend checking out the project and extracting the development zip i linked earlier to the project's directory
  153. (3:33:43 AM) dis_astranagant: ah
  154. (3:33:59 AM) dis_astranagant: needs some cygwin fuckery to build under windows I'm guessing?
  155. (3:34:44 AM) johnny0: in order to get decent output i have to build under cygwin and cross-compile using the ming64 compiler
  156. (3:35:00 AM) dis_astranagant: that's not too crazy
  157. (3:35:36 AM) johnny0: crazier than most are willing to do :]
  158. (3:36:13 AM) johnny0: to be honest though, it's a hell of a lot cleaner than trying to compile directly with msys/mingw
  159. (3:36:20 AM) dis_astranagant: well, if they're that lazy they don't need to be looking at the code anyway
  160. (3:37:27 AM) dis_astranagant: I'm not sure I've ever seen mingw just work with something non-trivial :v
  161. (3:39:20 AM) dis_astranagant: svn checkout's truckin but something tells me I'm gonna lose interest before it finishes
  162. (3:39:48 AM) johnny0: ahh yeah the music and such is pretty big
  163. (3:40:03 AM) tiger_eye_ left the room (quit: *.net *.split).
  164. (3:40:03 AM) stephenjp left the room (quit: *.net *.split).
  165. (3:40:06 AM) dis_astranagant: and svn pulls are slow at best
  166. (3:40:11 AM) johnny0: yeah
  167. (3:40:36 AM) johnny0: i'd really suggest using those pre-built binaries to save some time tonight
  168. (3:40:47 AM) dis_astranagant: already tried them
  169. (3:40:52 AM) dis_astranagant: they didn't work
  170. (3:41:03 AM) johnny0: on the svn pull?
  171. (3:41:13 AM) dis_astranagant: no, that's nowhere near done
  172. (3:41:29 AM) dis_astranagant: though it is speeding up maybe
  173. (3:41:35 AM) johnny0: try them on the svn pull before you pull your hair out trying to get the project to compile
  174. (3:41:42 AM) dis_astranagant: hehe
  175. (3:41:57 AM) johnny0: i have a feeling that the physfs stuff isn't reading stuff from the zips properly
  176. (3:42:17 AM) dis_astranagant: ah
  177. (3:42:18 AM) johnny0: the svn stuff isn't zipped, so you might have better luck (and it will help confirm/deny the issue)
  178. (3:42:21 AM) tiger_eye_ [[email protected]] entered the room.
  179. (3:42:21 AM) stephenjp [[email protected]] entered the room.
  180. (3:42:42 AM) dis_astranagant: couldn't I just unzip the stuff I have?
  181. (3:42:55 AM) johnny0: i tried that
  182. (3:42:59 AM) johnny0: i couldn't get it to run
  183. (3:43:04 AM) dis_astranagant: ah
  184. (3:43:05 AM) johnny0: so i didn't recommend doing it :]
  185. (3:43:14 AM) dis_astranagant: welp
  186. (3:44:02 AM) dis_astranagant: 25 megs in, just hit the music
  187. (3:44:41 AM) johnny0: :(
  188. (3:47:02 AM) dis_astranagant: mabye killing that latest t-engine instance will help :v
  189. (3:48:24 AM) johnny0: http://icculus.org/pipermail/physfs/2012-August/001040.html
  190. (3:48:25 AM) johnny0: hmm
  191. (3:51:39 AM) johnny0: maybe as one more random shot on your existing b43 zip directory
  192. (3:52:03 AM) johnny0: rename the directory to something like tengineb43
  193. (3:53:40 AM) |DM| [~Wewt|[email protected]] entered the room.
  194. (3:54:11 AM) dis_astranagant: and now it doesn't even get as far as before
  195. (3:54:28 AM) dis_astranagant: a window frame opens and immediately closes
  196. (3:54:41 AM) dis_astranagant: oh
  197. (3:54:42 AM) Mangolian left the room (quit: Ping timeout: 240 seconds).
  198. (3:54:50 AM) dis_astranagant: might use the right executable
  199. (3:54:54 AM) johnny0: heheh yeah
  200. (3:54:59 AM) johnny0: the dll's got clobbered
  201. (3:55:19 AM) dis_astranagant: and nope, it's definitely not hitting the path length limit or anything similar
  202. (3:55:35 AM) johnny0: in game/engines/
  203. (3:55:45 AM) johnny0: te4-0.9.43.teae to te4.teae
  204. (3:55:58 AM) johnny0: in game/modules, similar thing
  205. (3:56:14 AM) johnny0: just checking to make sure it's not choking on the special characters
  206. (3:56:40 AM) johnny0: i think the names of the file don't really matter, they are auto-searched-for
  207. (3:57:29 AM) dis_astranagant: and now the correct exe doesn't know what the fuck
  208. (3:58:59 AM) dis_astranagant: [ENGINE LOADER] no engines with id te4
  209. (3:59:31 AM) johnny0: oops i forgot to change the name on mine... ugh
  210. (3:59:49 AM) johnny0: try changing the engine back
  211. (4:00:08 AM) johnny0: but leave the ones in game/modules without dashes
  212. (4:01:56 AM) dis_astranagant: Module mismatch engine version boot-0.9.40 using engine te4-0.9.40
  213. (4:03:15 AM) johnny0: yeah that happens for me with the base install
  214. (4:03:18 AM) dis_astranagant: ah
  215. (4:03:33 AM) dis_astranagant: that's the only thing error looking besides the SDL one
  216. (4:04:10 AM) johnny0: well, i'm out of ideas -- i hope the svn install will work for you at least
  217. (4:04:25 AM) dis_astranagant: 72 megs into that
  218. (4:05:04 AM) dis_astranagant: maybe I should just sleep on it
  219. (4:05:16 AM) HousePet: percussive maintainance imo
  220. (4:05:31 AM) dis_astranagant: no, that's probably half the problem :v
  221. (4:05:58 AM) HousePet: decompress the team?
  222. (4:06:14 AM) dis_astranagant: johnny0 said he tried that and it didn't work
  223. (4:06:46 AM) HousePet: he said he couldn't get it to run, maybe he typoed?
  224. (4:07:03 AM) HousePet: oh I know, flush the plasma manifolds :)
  225. (4:07:11 AM) johnny0: i know decompressing the team files usually works for addons that have issues
  226. (4:07:40 AM) johnny0: but my game froze when i tried to do it with a module
  227. (4:09:47 AM) dis_astranagant: mine already freezes so you can't really tell
  228. (4:10:06 AM) HousePet: can't get worse then
  229. (4:10:44 AM) HousePet: would turning on the background stop it trying to load the image?
  230. (4:11:18 AM) dis_astranagant: wazzat?
  231. (4:12:22 AM) johnny0: housepet: i think it loads the background images before the little background game
  232. (4:13:13 AM) HousePet: bleh
  233. (4:13:29 AM) HousePet: it loads the game when it is disabled :/
  234. (4:21:37 AM) dis_astranagant: 114 mb of svn pull blargh
  235. (4:25:49 AM) dis_astranagant: it's 4:30 in the morning, I started this little adventure and 1:30 and I think it's about time I stopped being conscious for a little bit
  236. (4:27:42 AM) johnny0: gotcha, hopefully the SVN checkout works fine for you
