第三十二話「失敗と混乱と決意」
Chapter 32 - 'Failure, Chaos and Determination'

　赤蛇大蛇を討伐し、ギルドに帰ってきた。
　いつも通り、ジャリルと冒険者ギルドの外で待ち合わせ。
　完了カードを交換する。
　そして赤蛇の牙と皮を渡し、口裏合わせをする。

　量が多かったので、今回はヴェスケルを含めた全員で冒険者ギルドに入る。

　案の定、ノコパラが寄ってきた。
　この男は、本当にいつもギルドにいる。
　そして、毎回寄ってくる。

After we defeated the red food cobra, we returned to the guild.

As usual, we meet with Jaril in front of the adventurer's guild. We hand over the completion card. Then we hand over the red cobra's fangs and fur, and get our story straight.

Since there was quite a lot, Veskel included, all our members enter the guild.

As expected, Nokopera came over. This guy really does just stay in the guild all day. And he comes over everytime.

「ようよう、随分面白そうなのを狩ってきたじゃねえか。
　それ、赤喰大蛇の鱗じゃねえのか？　あ？」

　俺はジャリルに目線を送り、
　打ち合わせ通りに言葉を吐かせる。

"You've hunted a pretty interesting one, haven't you? This is a red food cobra hide, isn't it? Ah?"

My eyes meet with Jaril's, and we begin to tell the lies we'd prepared.

「あ、ああ。運よくな、弱っている所に出くわしたんだ」
「へぇ～。お前らがねえ～」

　ニヤニヤと、何か面白い事でもあったかのように。
　ノコパラはジャリルを見下ろしている。
　なんだ。
　何か、いつもと違う気がする。

"Y-, yeah. By luck, we happened to come across a weakened one."

"Wow~ You guys~"

Smirking, like he found something funny.

Nokopera seems to be looking down on Jaril.

Hm?

It feels that something is different from usual.

「と、途中で『スーパーブレイズ』の連中が死んでたんだ。
　あいつらが弱らせたんだろう」
「なに？　ブレイズ……死んだのか？」
「ああ」
「ま、赤蛇じゃしょうがねえか……」

　ノコパラは、ふぅんとつまらなさそうに息を吐いた。

"And so, on the way we found the dead members of 『Super Brayz』. It seems those guys had weakened it."

"What? Brayz... died?"

"Yeah."

"Well, since its a red cobra it can't be helped huh...?"

Nokopera goes 'hmmm' with disinterest.

「だが、いくら弱ってたからってお前ら二人で赤蛇はなぁ……」
「弱ってたというか、死にかけていたんだ。いや、もう死んでいたと言っても過言ではない。正確には死んでいなかったが、死んだも同然だったんだ」

　早口にそう言って、ジャリルは足早にそこを去る。
　ノコパラも納得していない顔で、標的を俺たちに切り替えた。

"Still, no matter how much it'd been weakened, for you two to have killed a red cobra is..."

"Weakened you might say, or dying you might say. No, it wouldn't be exaggerating to say it was already dead. Strictly speaking it wasn't dead, but well it was as good as dead."

Speaking quickly, Jaril quickly leaves.
With an expression of non-acceptance, Nokopera changes his target to us.

「お前らは、今日もペット探しか？」
「ええ、ジャリル師匠のペット捜索術は素晴らしいので、今日も小銭をゲットです」
「へぇ～」

　俺もまた、足早にさろうとする。
　何か、よくない感じがした。
　しかし、ノコパラは馴れ馴れしくも、俺の肩に手を回し、
　小声でボソリと言った。

「で、町の外で、どうやってペットを探すんだ」

"You guys were searching for pets today as well?"

"Yeah. Jaril-shishou's pet finding techniques are amazing, and so today we made some small change."

"Wow~"

I make to leave quickly as well. I'm getting a bad feeling somehow.

However, Nokopera in an overfamiliar manner puts his hand on my shoulder and whispers

"And, how exactly were you searching for pets outside of town?"

　一瞬だけ、無意識的に、俺の動きが止まった。
　でも、ポーカーフェイスは作れていたと思う。

For just an instant, I unconsciously stop moving. But I think I kept my poker face.

　まだ、想定内だ。
　俺たちが町の外に行くのを見られただけ。

It's still just a guess. All that he's seen is that we were outside town.

「今回はたまたま外にいたんですよ」
「へぇ～。というと何か？」

　ごまかす方向で話を進める。
　ノコパラはジャリルの肩をガシリと掴んだ。

"This time, the pet just happened to be outside of the town."

"Wow~ Then what happened?"

I advance the conversation with my lies. Nokopera has Jaril by the shoulders. [? unsure about this line]

「赤喰大蛇も、たまたま町の中にいたってことかよ？」

　なるほど。
　ジャリルたちは町中で姿を見られている。
　つまり、もう、バレてるってことだ。

"So did the red food cobra also by chance happen to be inside of town?"

I see.

So Jaril and Veskel were seen inside of town.

In other words, we've already been exposed.

「さぁて、不思議なものもあるもんですねぇ」

　このパターンは、想定していた。

　切り抜けるパターンはいくつかある。
　例えば、ジャリルを尻尾切りにすれば、この場は逃れられる。
　俺たちは低ランクで、高難度依頼を押し付けられて困っているのだ、と。
　が、これはやらない。
　これをやると、俺がルイジェルドに切られる可能性がある。
　戦士の行いじゃないからな。

"Wellll, miracles happen too, don't they?"

This kind of pattern should mean that it's still just an assumption. [pattern, as in, the way this conversation is going]

There are countless ways for getting out of this.

For example, if I leave Jaril for dead, I can get out of this. Since we were low ranked, we were troubled when a high ranking request was forced onto us.

But that won't do.

If I do this, there's a chance I'll sever ties with Ruijeld.


It's not something a warrior would do.

「おいおい、今更しらばっくれんなよ」
「しらばっくれるも何も、さて、僕らが何かしましたかね」
「あ？」
「僕らは『ピーハンター』に依頼を手伝ってもらい、
　『ピーハンター』の依頼を手伝っていた。それだけの事ですよ？」

　しらばっくれる方向から、開き直る方向へとシフト。
　ギルドの規約は見なおしたが、俺たちに非はないはずだ。
　だが、規約に書いてなければオッケーというわけではない。
　世の中、ルールを守れば何してもいいわけではないのだ。

　とはいえ、その正確な線引は俺にはわからない。
　だから、正しいという方向でごまかす。

"Oi, oi. It's too late to play dumb."

"I'm not playing dumb or any such thing. Now then, as to what we were doing."

"Huh?"

"After being helped by 『P Hunter』 for our request, we in turn helped 『P Hunter』 with their request. It was just that sort of thing, you know?"

Acting innocent to begin with, then becoming serious. I checked the guild rules again, and we didn't break any rules. However, that's not to say that because it's not written there, what we've done is okay. It's not like as long as you obey the rules, anything else you do is okay.

「ふざけんじゃねえぞ。
　てめえらのやり方を真似する阿呆が出てきたらどうなる？」
「どう、とは？」
「依頼が金で買える事になっちまう。
　冒険者ギルドの存在意義が無くなるんだよ」

　ふむ。
　金銭取引はしていない……と言い張ってもダメそうだな。
　でも、そうか、依頼の売買に分類されるのか。

　なるほど、こいつ頭がいいな。

　確かに、俺たちみたいなやり方が横行すれば、
　依頼を金で売買するヤツラも出てくるかもしれない。

　例えば、Dランクの依頼を全て受領し、
　他のDランクの連中に売るのだ。
　売ったヤツラは金も入り、ランクも上がる。
　何もしていないのに、だ。

　もっとも、そのやり方だと、売れなければ依頼失敗となるが。

"Don't fuck with me. What are you going to do if some idiots start imitating what you do?"

"What do you mean?"

"They'll start selling requests. The adventurer's guild would be ruined."

Hm. 'We didn't sell requests'... it seems things won't be settled by stubbornly saying that. But huh, so that's it. So what we've done could be classified as selling contracts.

I see. This guy is pretty smart.

Certainly, if what we've done has coem to life, guys who sell requests might start popping up.

For example, accepting all D requests, and then reselling them to other D rankers. The ones who sold them would not only get money, but rank up. Without doing anything at all. Though doing it like that, the requests that don't sell would fail.

「なんでノコパラさんがそんな事を気にするんですか？
　あんたには、迷惑かけてないでしょう？」
「ヘヘ、いいのか？　そんな態度を取って。
　お前らの取れる道は二つだぜ、おい、ジャリル、てめえも聞け」

　俺は胸ぐらを掴んで持ち上げられた。
　後ろでルイジェルドとエリスが気色ばむ。
　とりあえず、今はハウス。
　まだ話は終わっていない。

"Why do you care anyway, Nokopera-san? Are we bothering you?"

"Heheh, you sure you should be taking an attitude like that? You guys have two options. Oi, Jaril, you listen as well!"

I had been grabbed by my collars and lifted. Behind me, Ruijeld and Eris are getting angry.

For now, he's the house. [gambling-like? has advantage?]

He hasn't finished talking.

「ヘヘヘ……」

　馬面の表情は馬なのでわからない。
　だが、そこに下卑た笑いが貼り付けられてるのは、なんとなくわかった。

"Hehehe..."

I don't understand his horse face's expressions. Still, I can somehow understand that he's making a vulgar smile.

「冒険者資格が大事なら、
　毎月、鉄銭２枚、俺ん所に持って来い」

　あらやだ清々しい。
　この世界にきて、初めてこういう人に会った気がする。
　最近はどいつもこいつも中途半端にいい面と悪い面があるからな。
　こういう風に、悪い面だけを見せてくれる相手は楽でいい。
　余計な気遣いをしないで済むからな。

　しかし、ノコパラめ、
　どうりでずっとギルドにいるわけだ。
　コイツはギルド内で不正をしそうなヤツを見張っているのだ。
　そして、見つけるとこうして強請ってくる。
　楽な商売だ。
　コイツを通報すれば一発で終了なんじゃないだろうか。
　いや、そうすると通報した方の不正も発覚するわけか。

"If you don't want to lose your adventurer qualifications, pay me 2 iron coins a month.*

Oh my! How refreshing.

It's the first time meeting someone like this since coming to this world. Lately, everyone I've met have been half-assed villains. Seeing such an obviously bad guy is relieving, since he gets straight to the point.

Still, Nokopera, you bastard. So this is why you stay in the guild all day. You watch for people doing anything suspicious, and then when you find out you extort them. What a relaxing business. If they reported him, wouldn't he be busted straight away? No, if they did that, their crimes would come to light as well.

「おめーら。かなり稼ぐみたいだから、ヘヘ、余裕だろう？」
「い、いくつか、質問いいですか？」

　動揺しているフリをしつつ、俺は冷静に話を進める。

"You guys seem to be quite da rich. Hehe, you have money to spare right?"

"W-, would it be fine to ask a few questions?"

I pretend to tremble, while thinking calmly.

「あん？」
「やっぱ、今回のコレは、依頼の売買に分類されるんですよ……ね？」
「おう、バレりゃあ、罰金と冒険者資格の剥奪だ。困るだろ？」
「困ります、困ります」

　落ち着け、まだ慌てるような時間じゃない。
　こういう状況も、想定していた(・・・・・・)。
　大丈夫だ。
　まだ、大丈夫だ。

"Huuh?"

"So as expected, what we did this time counts as buying and selling requests?"

"Yeeeh. If they find out you'll be fined and lose your qualifications. That'd be troubling yeah?"

"We'd be troubled, definitely."

Calm down. It's not yet time to panic. This kind of situation is still just making assumptions.

It's fine.

Things are still fine.

「と、とりあえず今は持ちあわせがないので、
　ジャリルさんと、依頼の報告をしてきていいですか？」
「構わねえよ。だが、逃げんなよ？」
「もちろんですよ、旦那ぁ～」

　やっぱ、こいつ、あんまり頭良くないな。
　そう思いつつ、俺はカウンターへと向かう。

"F-, for now, can we turn in Jaril's request?"

"Go ahead. But don't try to run, yeh?"

"Of course, master~" [← he really says this]

This guy really IS an idiot.

While I think this, I head to the counter.

「お、おい……どうすんだ、どうすんだよ！」
「落ち着いて。平然としてください」

　動揺するジャリルを適当に相手しつつ、ヴェスケルを手招き。
　完了カードを受け渡し、報酬を受取る。
　それと同時に『ピーハンター』を解散させる。
　そして、ジャリルとヴェスケルを『デッドエンド』へと加入させた。

　意味のない措置かもしれない。
　冒険者ギルドがどこまで細かく帳簿をつけているのかわからないからな。

　背後を見ると、ルイジェルドが憤怒の形相だった。
　その視線の先には、ノコパラがいる。
　今回、ルール違反をしたのは俺たちなわけだが、
　それを傘にきて脅すような行為は戦士的にダメらしい。
　とりあえず、ルイジェルドをジェスチャで制しておく。

　エリスは状況がわかっていないようだ。
　言葉がわかれば、最初にノコパラに襲い掛かるのは、恐らく彼女だ。
　拳ではなく剣で襲いかかるだろう。

"O-, oi... What do we do, what do we do!?"

"Calm down. Please calm down."

The trembling Jaril beckons Veskel over. Handing over the completion card, they receive their reward. At the same time, they disband 『P Hunter』 and join 『Dead End』.

It might be a pointless measure to take. I don't know if the guild has more detailed records.

When I look behind me, I can see that Ruijeld has gotten angry. In his line of sight is Nokopera. Though this time the ones who have broken the rules are us, using that fact as a shield and threatening us seems to be bad conduct for a warrior. At any rate, I'd better gesture to Ruijeld to calm down.

Eris seems not to understand the situation. If she understood what we were saying, the first one to attack Nokopera would probably be her. And not with her fists, but with a sword.

　戻ってくると、ノコパラはなれなれしく、俺たちに肩に腕を回してきた。
　ジャリルは愛想笑いで受け取ったばかりの鉄銭２枚を渡そうとする。
　が、俺はその手を掴んでとめた。

"Look, for now just pay me."

When I return, Nokopera acts overfamiliarly and turns me by the shoulder. [?] Jaril makes an insincere smile and hands over 2 iron coins.

But I stop his hand.

「その前に一つ」
「んだよ。早くしろよ、俺ぁ気が短ぇんだ」

　心の中で深呼吸を一つ。
　うまくいくことを祈ろう。

"Before that, one thing."

"Wut? Hurry up, I have a bad temper yanno." [←lol]

In my mind, I take a deep breath, and pray for things to go well.

「俺たちが不正をしたって証拠、あるんだろうな？」

　ノコパラの忌々しそうな舌打ちが、ギルド内に響いた。

"You DO have proof of our crimes, right?"

Nokopera clicks his tongue in annoyance, and the sound resounds through the guild.

　ギルドの帳簿から、
　『デッドエンド』が行った依頼がピックアップされる。
　ギルド職員は、何のために、などと聞かなかった。
　ノコパラがこれを聞くのは、今日で初めてではないのだろう。

　それらを元に、依頼者の所へと向かった。

We pick up the guild account book and check 『Dead End』's requests.　The staff member doesn't ask for a reason. It seems that today isn't the first time Nokopera has asked for the book.

Using it as a reference, we visit the clients.

「路地裏で襲おうとか考えんなよ？」

　ノコパラはルイジェルドとジャリルを見ながら、そう言った。
　ルイジェルドの殺気はかなりのものだと思うが、彼は怖くないのだろうか。
　案外、そういう殺気を受けるのは慣れているのかもしれない。

"Don't even think of attacking me in an alleyway."

Nokopera says this while eyeing Jaril and Ruijeld. Though Ruijeld is giving off quite the killing intent, Nokopera doesn't seem to be bothered. Unexpectedly, he may be used to this kind of thing.

「俺が死ねば、仲間がギルドに報告するし、
　それに、なんちゃってＣランクのお前らと違って、
　俺はＢに上がれるＣだからよ」

　最後の一言は、さすがに虚勢だろう。
　ノコパラも５対１で勝てるとは思っていまい。
　いくら俺たちを追い込んでいるとはいえ、
　彼だって死にたくはないのだ。
　とはいえ、浅はかだな。俺なら、護衛の一人でも付ける。

"If I die, my friends will report this to the guild. Moreover, I'm different to you half-assed C rankers. I'm a C ranker who can already rise to B rank, you know!"

That last line is probably a bluff. Even Nokopera doesn't think he can win 5 to 1. No matter how willing he is to corner us, he doesn't want to die. Though I say this... how foolish. If I were in his position, even having one guard would be better.

「さぁて、ついたぜ」

　最初の一軒。
　見たことの無い民家だ。
　ノックすると、中から出てきたのは、偏屈そうな婆さんだった。
　ワシのような鼻で、黒いローブを着ている。
　家の中からは、甘ったるいにおいが漂ってきた。
　恐らくあの中で、ね○ねるねるねを作っているのだ……。

　彼女はノコパラの顔を見るといぶかしげな顔をしたが、
　ヴェスケルの顔を見ると、顔をほころばせた。

"Now then, we've arrived."

The first house. It's one I've never seen. Upon knocking, an obstinate looking old lady comes out from inside. She has a roman nose and is wearing a black robe. A sweet smell is coming from inside. She's probably making nerunerunerune. Though she gives a quizzical look when she sees Nokopera, she smiles broadly when she sees Veskel.

「おや、ヴェスケルじゃないか。
　今日はどうしたんだい？　大勢ひきつれて。
　ああ、それが『デッドエンドのルイジェルド』のメンバーかい？」

　ノコパラはぎょっとした顔で俺たちを見渡し。
　婆さんの視線がヴェスケルの顔に注がれているのを見て、

"Oh my, if it isn't Veskel. What are you doing here today? You've got quite a few people with you. Are these the members of 『Ruijeld of Dead End』?"

Nokopera looks at us startled. Seeing that the old lady is looking directly at Veskel, he exclaims

"Hah!?" and breaks into a smile.

「ハン！」

　と、にやけた笑いを張り付かせた。

「婆さん。こいつらは、『デッドエンド』じゃねえんだ。
　アンタ、だまされてたんだよ」
「あん？」

　婆さんはノコパラを一瞥すると、
　ハッ、と鼻で笑った。

"Baa-san, this person isn't 『Dead End』. You've been tricked." [way to address old women, nto actually his grandmother]

"Huh?"

Hearing this, she scoffs at Nokopera.

「どう騙したっていうんだい？」
「どうって、そりゃ」
「ヴェスケルは、きちんと害虫駆除をしてくれたよ。
　さすがはズメバ族だね。あれ以来、一匹も見かけないよ」

　どうやら、この老婆はヴェスケルが回った家の一つらしい。
　そういえば、ルイジェルドが監視した話の一つに、そんな事もあったか。

"How exactly did I get tricked?"

"Well that's"

"Veskel did her job perfectly. As expected of the Sumeba clan. Since then, I haven't seen a single one!" [of the insects]

It seems this is one of the houses that Veskel had gone to. Speaking of which, something like that was reported by Ruijeld.

「きちんと仕事をしてくれるなら、
　あたしゃ本物の『デッドエンド』でも構わんよ」

　その言葉に衝撃を受けたのはノコパラだけではなかった。
　ルイジェルド本人も驚いた顔をしていた。

"As long as they do their job properly, it doesn't matter to be even if they're the real 『Dead End』."

Hearing this, it wasn't just Nokopera who was shocked. Ruijeld being the real thing was shocked as well.

「け、けどな！」
「老い先短い身だしね。
　最後にそんなのと出会えるなら、会ってみたいものさ」

　今、会ってますけどね。

　ノコパラは目を白黒させながら、
　イライラした顔でヴェスケルに振り返った。

"B-, but!"

"I'm getting quite old. I kind of want to meet the real thing before I die."

You're meeting with the real thing right now, though.

Rolling his eyes with an annoyed expression, Nokopera looks at Veskel.

「ヴェスケル！　てめえ冒険者カードだしてみろ！」

　ヴェスケルはハッとした顔で、しかし、ニヤリと笑った。
　そこには、パーティ名『デッドエンド』と書かれたカードがあった。

"Veskel! Show me ya guild card!"

Veskel was surprised, but then grinned. On the party card was 『Dead End』.

「なっ！　ち、畜生、てめえらやりやがったな……！」

　すでに、『ピーハンター』は存在しない。
　調べれば、ギルドの帳簿には残っているだろう。
　さらに調べれば、規約のどこかに引っかかるかもしれない。
　だが、ノコパラはそこまで頭が回らなかったらしい。

"Wha-! S-, shit! You guys have really done it now...!"

『P Hunter』 no logner exists. If you check, it's still in the guild account book. If you check further, you might find that due to protocol the process is still stuck somewhere. But these thoughts don't seem to go through Nokopera's head.

「クソが！　次だ！」

"Damn it! Next place!"

　ギルドに戻ることはせず、
　俺はニヤニヤと笑いながら、ノコパラについていく。

We don't return to the guild, and while I smirk, I follow Nokopera.

　数十件の依頼人を回り、ノコパラは赤を通り越して青い顔になっていた。
After dozens of events like the above, Nokopera's face is no longer red, but has gone beyond that into a blue.

「ちくしょう、どうなってやがる」

　どの依頼者も、ジャリルとヴェスケルを『デッドエンド』として認識していた。
　そして、冒険者カードも『デッドエンド』。

　挙句の果てに、最初の依頼である少女の下に訪れると、
　少女が歓喜の声をあげてルイジェルドの足に抱きつくという、嬉しいハプニングもあった。

"Dammit, wusss goin on?"

All the clients had recognised Jaril and Veskel as 『Dead End』. Moreover, their adventurer cards said 『Dead End』 too.

In the end, we return to the little girl that was our very first client. With a delighted voice, she clung to Ruijeld's leg.

「ノコパラさん。悪いんですが、証拠が無いんじゃあ、
　僕らもあんたに金を払うことは出来ませんよ」
「くそがあ」

　ていうか、逆に彼をギルドに訴えることも出来よう。
　依頼の邪魔をしたとかなんとかでっち上げて。

"Nokopera-san. I'm sorry but, since you don't have any proof, we can't give you any money."

"Shit..."

On the contrary, we could report Nokopera for breaking the rules about obstructing another adventure's job.

「くっくっく」

　思わず、悪い笑いが溢れる。

　そうしているうちに、最後の依頼者の場所が見えてきた。
　というか、狼の足爪亭だった。
　ジャリルたちは俺たちの泊まる宿屋でも働いていたらしい。

　さすがに顔を知る者がいるとごまかすのは難しいかもしれない。
　が、宿屋の主人とはそれほど仲良くしていた記憶もない。
　ま、今まで通りだ。
　なんとかなるだろう。

"Ku ku ku!"

Unconsciously, an evil laugh leaks from my mouth. While this happens, I see the final client's place. Speaking of which, it's the Wolf's Claw Inn. It seems that Jaril and Veskel had worked at the inn we were staying at as well.

As expected, it'd be hard to fool a person who remembered faces, but the owner of the inn doesn't have that great a memory. Well, we've made it this far. It'll work out somehow.

「最後は、あいつらだ」

　足爪亭の入り口から出てきた二人。
　それを見て、
　俺は凍りついた。

　ヤバイ。
　俺の頭が警鐘を鳴らす。
　エマージェンシー。
　突然の空襲。敵機襲来。
　不測の事態。
　俺の考えの足りなさが、頭の悪さが。
　ここにきて浮き彫りになる。

"This guy is the last one."

From the Wolf's Claw Inn exit two people.

Upon seeing them...

I freeze.



Oh crap.

Alarm bells are going off inside my head.

EMERGENCY.

It's suddenly an air raid. The enemy enemy planes are attacking.

An unforeseen situation.

That I didn't think enough. That I wasn't smart enough.

At this point it comes to light.

「あ、ルーデウス、帰ってきたのか……お疲れさん。
　って、なんだ、ぞろぞろ引き連れて」

　クルトは疲れきった顔で、俺たちを出迎えてくれた。
　ノコパラは俺の焦りを悟ったのか、
　あるいは最初からこうするつもりだったのか。

"Ah, Rudeus, so you've returned. Otsukaresan. Huh. You've come in quite a group, huh?"
[casualish way of saying otsukaresama deshita, good work etc.]

With an exhausted expression, Kuruto greets us. Nokopera can sense my impatience. Or it could be that he had planned on doing this from the start.

「よう、前の石化の森で助けてもらったのは、『デッドエンド』で間違いねえよな？」

　ああ、ヤバイ。

　エク公とルーデウスさんがタイマン張ってどうだったか、わかる？

　ジェルドさんもマジヤバ。
　こっちにフッ、あっちにフッと動いただけで、アナコンダボン！
　スッゲーことやってんのにヨユーって顔してんの！

　と、そんな感じの解説を、ノコパラは、そうかそうかほうほうそらすげー、とニヤニヤしながら聞いていた。

「おかしいな～おい、今日、町で依頼を受けてたやつが、
　石化の森で人助けなんかしてんだろうなあ」
「いや、あの、それは、僕らがジャリルと一緒に……」
「ジャリルもヴェスケルも、ずーっと町にいたぜ？」

A girl coming around the corner, a young man, an elderly person. All of them drop what they were holding and run away with a scream.

『どうにかしなさいよ！』
『できませんでした。すいません』
『ルーデウスに出来ないなら、どうしようもないわね！』

　エリスはあっさり諦めた。

　もうどうにもならん。

　全ては俺の責任だ。
　見つかっても、どうにかなると思っていた。
　浅はかな考えで、事態がどうにかなっても大丈夫な気でした。
　結果、ダメだった。

　こうなってしまえば、
　俺に出来る事といえば、
　当初の予定通り、全てを水に流すことぐらいだ。

　ルイジェルドは一人で走り出し、俺たちは取り残された。
　衛兵達が走ってきて、事情を聞かれた。
　俺はルイジェルドは悪くないと抗弁した。
　しかし、子供のいうことだ。
　そう言えと脅されたのだなと、勝手に判断された。

　ルイジェルドは悪事を企んでいた。
　俺たちはそれに利用された。
　悪事の内容はわからないが、
　運よく最悪の事態を避けることができた。
　彼らの中ではそうなったのだ。

　周囲の人々は、俺とエリスをかわいそうな目で見ていた。
　何も知らない、利用された子供としてみていた。

　はらわたが煮えくり返りそうだった。
　ルイジェルドが何をやったというのだ。
　全部、俺がやったことじゃないか。
　俺の甘い考えが引き起こした事態じゃないか。


　俺たちは宿に戻ると、すぐに荷物をまとめた。
　大して量の多くない荷物をまとめ、宿を出る。
　早くしなければ、ルイジェルドがどこかに行ってしまうかもしれない。

　どのみち、俺たちだってこの町にはいられない。
　ノコパラは生きている。
　仲間もいると言っていた。
　俺たちの不正もそのままだ。
　ほとぼりが冷めれば、次はルイジェルドの助けはない。

And then Ruijeld was chased out of town. He had taken all the crimes onto himself and escaped.

It was really unfair.

Ruijeld had run by himself and we were left behind. The guards had come running around asked about the situation. I protested that Ruijeld had done nothing wrong. Even so, they had just taken it as a child's words. They arbitrarily decided that I had been threatened into saying it.

Ruijeld had come up with an evil ploy. We were used to that purpose. Though they didn't know what the plan involved, by some luck the worst hadn't come to pass. The guards were all saying things like that.

The people around us looked at Eris and I with pity. They looked at us like children who had been used without knowing anything.

My insides were burning up. Just what did Ruijeld do? Wasn't it all my fault!? Wasn't it because of my naive thinking that things had come to this?

We returned to the inn and immediately gathered our luggage.

Finished packing our small amounts of luggage, we leave the building.

At any rate, there wasn't a place for us in this town anymore. Nokopera is alive. He had said that he had companions. It still stands that we've done something wrong. Ruijeld won't be there to save us once things have calmed down.

　こいつはどちらかというと、助けてくれようとした側だ。

　エリスは両手を後ろにして彼を睨んでいるが。

"Sorry Kuruto. I said too much."

"No. It's fine. It was the truth, after all."

Kuruto is a good guy. Eris is glaring at him with her arms behind her back, though.

「クルト、頼みがある。命の恩を返してくれ」
「ああ、なんだ？」

　クルトは、まじめな顔で頷いた。

"Kuruto, I need you to do something for us. It's returning the favour of having saved you life."

"Yeah. What is it?"

Kuruto had made a serious face.

「ルイジェルドは悪い奴じゃない。
　昔の出来事のせいで怖がられているけど、いい奴なんだ。
　俺たちがこの町を出ていった後も、そういう噂を流してくれ」
「あ、ああ。わかってるよ。命の恩人、だもんな」

　本当にわかっているのやら。
　まあ、口約束でもしておけば、もしかするとやってくれるかもしれない。

"Ruijeld isn't a bad guy. He's feared because of an incident in the past, but he's a good guy. After we leave this town, please spread this."

"Y-, yeah. I get it. He's the one who saved my life after all."

I'm not sure if he really gets it. Well, though he may just ignore it as a verbal promise, he might actually really do it.

　冒険者ギルドに寄り、ジャリルとヴェスケルを『デッドエンド』から脱退させる。
　ついでに職員に言伝を頼む。
When we went to the guild, Jaril and Veskel had already left 『Dead End』. At the same time, they had left a message with the staff member.

「こんなことになったけど、助かった。ありがとう。
　『彼』も感謝しているって。伝えて下さい」

　あいつらは最後に裏切った。
　けど、それも仕方がないのかもしれない。
　結局のところ、彼らが助かるには、その道しか無かった。

　最後にだけ目をつぶれば、
　世話になったのは確かだ。

"Though things have come to this, you've really helped us. Thanks. We're thankful to 『Him』 as well. Please tell him this."

Those guys had betrayed us in the end, but there was probably no other way. In the end, they could only be saved by being allowed to remain in this town.

If you ignore the very end, we really did owe them a lot.

　町の入り口へ向かう途中、運搬用に飼育されたトカゲのような爬虫類を一匹購入する。
　足が六本あり、ギョロっとした目がチャーミングなトカゲだ。
　こいつは魔大陸において、馬車のような役割を持っている。
　大の大人がゆうに二人乗れる種で、鉄銭１０枚。
　全財産の約半分。
　だが、旅に出る時には、これだけは買おうと決めていたものだ。
　魔大陸を移動する際には、このトカゲがいるといないのとでは、大きな違いがあると聞いた。
　店主から操り方を聞き、荷物を積んで、町の外へと向かう。

As we head to the town exit, we buy a lizard-like reptile for transport. It has 6 legs, and was a charming lizard with goggly eyes. On the Magic Continent, it takes the role of a horse. For one that could carry two large adults, it's 10 iron coins. That's half of our entire savings. Still, when we had decided to leave, it was decided that we'd buy at least this. We had heard that when travelling the Magic Continent, having one of these lizards would make a big difference.

　門にはたくさんの兵士がいた。
　これから、ルイジェルド退治にでも出かけるのかもしれない。
　その中に、見た顔があった。
　トカゲ頭と豚頭だ。
　彼らは青ざめつつも、興奮した表情だった。

There are a lot of guards are the gate. They might be preparing to hunt down Ruijeld. Among them are two faces I've seen before; pig face and lizard face. They're pale, and making a nervous expression.

　話しかけると、
　先ほど『デッドエンド』が出ていったから気をつけろ、と忠告をもらう。
　そこから、やれデッドエンドは悪魔だの、
　町中で一体なにをやらかそうとしていたのかだの、
　ルイジェルドを見たこともないくせに、
　憶測だけで悪と決めつける発言が続いた。

We're told that 『Dead End』 had left from this exit earlier, and so we're advised to be careful. Whether that Dead End was a devil, or that he had done something in town, they were just guessing. Even though they'd never even seen Ruijeld before, they had one-sidedly decided he was evil and continued to say such things.

「あの人は、二ヶ月近く街中にいましたけど、
　何一つ問題なんか起こしていませんよ」

　耐え切れず、そう言った。

　門番は「はぁ？」という顔をしていた。
　俺は二人を睨み、舌打ちを一つ、町の外へと出た。

　心がささくれ立っていた。

"That person had been in town for two months, but hadn't caused a single problem you know."

Unable to bear it, I had said that.

The guards looked like they had no idea what I was saying.

Glaring at the two, I had clicked my tongue, and then left town.

　ルイジェルドと再会しなければいけない。
　彼はまだ近くにいるだろうか。
　いや、いるはずだ。

　彼の戦士としての誇りが本物であるなら。
　俺たちを……いや、エリスを見捨てるはずがない。

We had to meet up with Ruijeld.

Is he even still in the area?

No, he should be.

If his warrior's pride is the real thing, then he wouldn't abandon u-... no, he wouldn't abandon Eris.

「このぐらいでいいか」

　町が見えなくなったぐらいで、空に向かって魔術で花火を上げた。
　轟音が響く。
　熱が降り注ぎ、光が散る。

　しばらく待つも、ルイジェルドは現れない。

"I wonder if here is fine."

At a place where we can no longer see the town, I create a firework with magic. A thunderous sound resounds. There's a downpour of heat, and lights fall from the sky.

Even though we wait for a while, Ruijeld doesn't appear.

「エリス、ルイジェルドを呼んでください」

　エリスが大音声でルイジェルドを呼ぶ。
　大きな声だ。
　しばらくして現れたのは、パクスコヨーテだった。
　虫の居所が悪い俺は、そいつらに八つ当たりした。
　周辺の岩が無くなり、キレイな広場になった。
　パクスコヨーテは肉片になった。
　こうやってバラバラにしてもゾンビとして復活するのだろうか。
　ふん、知ったこっちゃないな。
　あんな町の連中なんて。

"Eris, please call for Ruijeld."

Eris shouts with a loud voice.

What had appeared after a while were pax coyotes. Since I was in a bad mood, I vented my anger on them. The surroundings became clear of rocks, and the area around us became nice and even. The pax coyotes had become pieces of meat. In pieces like this, they shouldn't become zombies.

Hm, I don't care anyway, about a town like that.

「見て、ルイジェルドよ」

　戦闘が終わった頃、ルイジェルドが姿を見せた。
　彼はバツの悪そうな顔をしていた。
　そんな顔はしないでほしい。

"Look, it's Ruijeld."

In the period after the battle, Ruijeld had revealed himself.

He's been making an awkward expression.

I don't want him to make a face like that.

「なんで呼んですぐに現れなかったんですか？
　黙っていなくなるつもりだったんですか？」

　けど、なぜか俺の口から出てきたのは、
　彼を責めるような詰問口調にだった。
　そんなつもりじゃなかったのに。

"Why didn't you appear when we called for you? Were you planning on not saying anything and leaving?"

But for some reason when I opened my mouth, I had spoken to him with a questioning tone as though I were condemning him.

「すまん」

　開口一番、謝られた。
　居心地が悪い。'

"Sorry."

The first thing that came out of his mouth was an apology.

　どう考えても、俺が悪い。
　調子にのって、ジャリル達を仲間に引き入れて、
　安易な方法で先に進もうとして、
　悪事がバレてつけこまれて、
　でも何とかなると簡単に考えて、
　八方塞がりになって、
　そして、ルイジェルドに尻拭いをしてもらったのだ。

　ルイジェルドが泥をかぶってくれなければ、
　俺たちはあの町に縛られ続ける事になったかもしれない。
　いや、ノコパラは、あの道のプロだ。
　クルトたちがいなくても、最終的には俺たちを追い詰めただろう。

I can't accept this. However you think about it, I'm in the wrong. Getting carried away and forcing Jaril and Veskel to be our companions, planning on going ahead in an easy-going manner, taking advantage of wrongdoings, getting caught but thinking I'd deal with it somehow, getting checkmated as well.
And finally letting Ruijeld clean up my mess.

Had Ruijeld not muddied himself covering for me, we might have been tied to that town. No, since Nokopera was a pro at extorting people, even had it not been for Kuruto, in the end we would have been cornered.

「なんで謝るんですか。謝るのは、こっちの方ですよ」

　いたたまれなかった。

"Why are you apologising? The one who should be apologising is me, you know."

I couldn't endure it.

「いや、お前は、やれるだけの事をやっていた」
「でも」
「作戦に失敗はつきものだ。
　俺はお前が、日夜神経を磨り減らして、
　あれこれと考えていたのを知っている」

　ルイジェルドはふっと笑い、俺の頭に手を載せた。

"No, you just did what you had to do."

"But"

"That your plan had failed was inevitable. I know that because of me you had to think about things day and night, and you were getting worn out."

Ruijeld had suddenly laughed and placed his hand on my head.

「まあ、お前は何を考えているのかわからなかったし、
　今日まではそれが、良からぬ企みだと思っていた。
　ゆえに、我慢できない事も多かったが」

　ルイジェルドはエリスを見て、うんと頷いた。

"Well, though I didn't know what you were thinking about, I had thought that your plans up until today were wrong, and so there were a lot of things that I couldn't bear with but..."

Ruijeld looks at Eris and nods firmly.

「お前はあるものを守ろうと必死なだけだったのだな。
　先ほど、お前がヤツを殺そうとした時。
　その覚悟を見せてもらった」

　先ほどって、ああ、町を水没させようとした時か。

"You were just doing your best to protect something, weren't you? Just now when you had planned to kill that guy, you showed me that determination."

'Just now' means... Ah, when I was going to submerge the town in water?

「守るべきものがあるお前は戦士だ」

　戦士だと。
　そう言われて、
　涙が出そうになった。

　俺はそんな立派じゃない。
　浅ましく金儲けを考えて、
　損得だけを考えて、
　ルイジェルドを切り捨てようとまでしたのだ。

　最後の最後に頼れる相手を捨てようとしたのだ。

"You who have something to protect, are a warrior."

A warrior, you say?

When I heard that, it felt like tears were going to come out.

I'm nothing so upstanding. Despicably thinking only about making money, and about loss and gain, I had even thoguht to abandon Ruijeld.

At the last moment I had thoguht to abandon the person I'd been relying on.

「ルイジェルドさん、僕……いや、俺は……」

　真摯な言葉で、自分の言葉で。
　敬語なんて鎧を付けない、俺自身の言葉で、
　しかし、何を言おうとしたのかは、分からない。

"Ruijeld-san, I(boku)... no, I(ore)..."

With sincerity, with my own words, without being hiding behind respect. Though I had wanted to say something like that, I didn't know what.

「言うな」

　ルイジェルドは俺の言葉を、遮った。

"Don't say it."

Ruijeld stopped me.

「これからは、俺の事は後回しにしろ」
「え？」
「安心しろ。悪評の回復をせずとも、俺はお前たちを守る。
　信用しろ。いや、信用してくれ」

"From now on, leave my business aside for a bit."

"Eh?"

"Relax. Even if my reputation isn't fixed, I'll still protect you. Rely on me. No, please rely on me."
[that last 'please' isn't to indicate politeness, but rather they'd be like doing him a favour by relying on him]

　信用はしている。
　信頼もしている。

I rely on you. I believe in you.

　やらなくてもいい。
　なるほど、確かにルイジェルドの名前を売るという行為は骨だ。
　目的を二つ持てば、行動も曖昧になる。
　無理も出てくる。
　最近の俺の精神的なストレスは相当なものだった。
　考えられることも考えられず、思いつく事も思いつかなかった。
　結果として、今回のような失敗を引き起こす。

It's fine if I don't do it.

I see. Certainly, selling Ruijeld's name is tiring. Since I had two goals, my actions became confused. I even tried impossible things. Lately my stress had become quite considerable. I didn't think of things I should have thought of. I didn't notice ideas that I should have noticed. In the end, I had been met with a failurelike today's.

　だからやらなくてもいい。
That's why it's fine if I don't do it.

　だが、納得できるものでもない。
　あんな光景を目の当たりにして。
　恐れられているのでなければ、
　街中から石を投げられるような光景を見て。

But this isn't something I can accept. I had seen that sort of thing with my own eyes after all. How if it wasn't for people fearing him, he wouldn't have been tossed outside town like a rock.

　はいそうですか、と。
　じゃあ、次からは町の外で待っていてくださいね。
　などと、言えるわけがない。

If I just obediently accept this, what's going to happen when we hit the next town? Ask him 'Please wait outside, okay?'? There's no way I can accept this sort of thing.

「いえ、ルイジェルドさんの悪評は、必ず消します」

"No. I'll definitely clear your bad name, Ruijeld-san."

　むしろ、俺は決意を新たにした。

Instead, I find my determination anew.

　これはせめてもの恩返しだ。
　次はうまくやってみせる。
　自分に無理をさせず、出来る範囲でやってみせる。

This is the least I can do to pay him back. I'll show him that I can do it well the next time. Without doing things that are impossible for me, I'll do whatever's possible instead.

「懲りないヤツだな。
　そんなに俺が信用できないか？」
「信用していますよ。だから報いたいんじゃないですか」

"You're a pretty stubborn guy, aren't you? Am I really that unreliable?"

"You're reliable. That's why I want to pay you back, isn't it?"

　俺だって、昔はイジメられていたのだ。
　一度貼られたレッテルに苦しみ、何十年も人のいない世界にいた。
　ロキシーに連れ出してもらわなければ、シルフィやエリスに会うこともなかった。

In the past, I was bullied. Just because I had been called a name, I secluded myself in my own world for decades. Had Roxy not taken me outside, I wouldn't have met Eris nor Sylphy.

　ルイジェルドと俺とでは、ケースが違う。
　規模も全然違う。
　そんなことはわかっている。
　でも、だからといって。
　俺がルイジェルドを見捨てる理由にはならない。

My situation and Ruijeld's are difference. The scale of the problem is also different. I understand that. Even so, that's no reason to abandon Ruijeld.

　ロキシーのように、無自覚的に出来るわけではない。
　俺にできるのは、失敗を続けながら、泥の中を這って進んでいく事だけだ。
　ルイジェルドにとってはいい迷惑かもしれない。
　また今回みたいに失敗して、ルイジェルドに尻拭いさせることになるかもしれない。

It won't be accidentally like Roxy. I'll just continue to do the things that I can, while failing again and again, and crawling through the mud. I might become quite a nuisance for Ruijeld. I might fail once again, and Ruijeld may have to clean up after me again.

　でもいい。
　何もやらないよりはいい。

But that's fine. It's better than doing nothing at all.

「……頑固なヤツだな」
「ルイジェルドさんほどじゃありません」
「フッ。じゃあ、よろしく頼む」

　ルイジェルドは苦笑し、静かに頷いた。

　なぜだろうか。
　俺はその時、ルイジェルドと、
　本当の意味で、信頼関係を結んだと思った。

"...You're a pretty stubborn guy, aren't you?"

"Nowhere near as stubborn as you are, Ruijeld-san."

"Fuu. Well then, I'll be in your care."               [the 'fuu' is an exhale/laugh. also the end is yoroshiku tanomu]

Ruijeld gives a bitter smile, and quietly nods.

I wonder why. It feels like this it the first time Ruijeld and I have truly trusted each other.

　翌朝。
　起きると、ルイジェルドがスキンヘッドになっていた。

The next morning.
When I wake up, Ruijeld has become a skinhead.

　唖然。
　というか、怖い。
　顔の傷も相まって、ヤクザみたいだ。

I'm dumbfounded.

And it's scary!

Together with the scar on his face, he looks like a yakuza.

「今回のことで、人が俺の髪を恐れていると分かったからな」

"I understand from the incident this time that people are afraid of my hair, you see."

　凄い覚悟だと思ってしまった。
　俺の常識だと、坊主頭にするということには、決意と反省の意味がある。
　この世界には、そんな常識はない。

　無いのだが……。
　この行動を見ると、俺も頭を丸めないといけない気がしてきた。
　反省には、行動を。
　ルイジェルドがやったのなら、俺も坊主にすべきではないのか。
　いや、でも、しかし……。

That's some amazing resolve.

To me, shaving your head shares the same meaning as determination and reflection.

[like showing your determination, and saying sorry]

I don't think that it has such a meaning in this world.

Even so...

Seeing this, I feel that it won't do to not shave my head as well.

To show that I'm reflecting through my actions.

If Ruijeld is doing it, don't I have to as well?

「え、エリス、俺もああいう風にした方がいいかな？」
「ダメよ、あたし、ルーデウスの髪、結構好きだもん」

　エリスを逃げ場に使った。
　不甲斐ない俺を、笑え。

"E-, Eris. Would it be better if I shaved my head like that as well?"

"Don't. I really like your hair, after all."

I used Eris to cop out.

I laugh at my disappointing self.
