  12. [17:48] * Happymancer nods
  13. [17:49] <@KamenWriter> So, Nick up?
  14. [17:49] * Kain is now known as Karsten
  15. [17:49] <Gents> o
  16. [17:49] * Happymancer is now known as Elsa
  17. [17:49] * Gents is now known as Chatters
  18. [17:50] <@KamenWriter> So
  19. [17:53] <@KamenWriter> The year is 1917, mid-May. It's been a long, hard war for the Central powers and their allies. Every single one of you knows at least one person that's been lost in the trenches, and still more and more people are sent off to the meat grinder every day. You get the idea that this new kind of war that Europe has been waging is completely unfamiliar to the old men runnign the war.
  20. [17:54] <@KamenWriter> Some of you may have even seen battle, and you know very well there is no glory in this fight.
  21. [17:55] <@KamenWriter> Or if you are young and haven't seen it yet, you may hold some hope that the wide-eyed shell-shocked expressions on the veterans doesn't mean what you fear.
  22. [17:57] <@KamenWriter> Either way, you've been spending the past week in Berlin, one last week before your marching orders take effect. You have been briefed and know you're heading east towards your allies in the Ottoman Empire.
  23. [17:58] <@KamenWriter> Rudiger, you know your plane is waiting for you when you get there, Karsten is part of a normal unit of ground troops that will bolster the ranks of the fighting men in the desert, and Elsa is part of a small, semi-secret squad of suspiciously scared, weak-looking soldiers.
  24. [17:59] <@KamenWriter> Kar and Rud: You don't know what the deal is with Elsa's squad, except that they have trained and are utilizing a very rag-tag group of women, young men, old men, and all sorts, not like the homogenous squads of strapping Prussian warriors in the rest of the army.
  25. [18:00] <@KamenWriter> You are currently on the train platform, waiting for the train to arrive to take you to the eastern front.
  26. [18:01] * Elsa looks around to determine if others have their pokemon out
  27. [18:01] <@KamenWriter> You are surrounded by many, many other soldiers, mixing about with one another. You are all currently at-ease. Several men are smoking, and many have already begun to drink strong whiskey that they keep in hip flasks. A few games of cards have sprung up here and there. The train will arrive in about 2 hours.
  28. [18:02] <@KamenWriter> Many do. You notice that the ones who do are quite friendly with their pokemon. Perhaps they are pokemon they brought from hom?
  29. [18:03] * Elsa keeps her Growlithe and Eevee out then, sitting down wherever there is an opening on the ground or bench
  30. [18:04] <@KamenWriter> Let's say, just for the sake of speed, you are all drawn in your own ways towards a floating game of gin that has been playing off and on for about as long as you've been there. It's at least good spectator material, even if you won't play.
  31. [18:05] * Karsten finds himself curious about that one squad, but has kept quiet so far... he's a young man with a medic armband and a rifle slung away. He's currently holding his shuckle, Saft, in his arms while a bulbasaur with a white and yellow sort of plant on its back waddles along behind him.
  32. [18:08] * Chatters stands about, watching the Gin game, his only flask in hand. In his current uniform, he added a scarf around his neck to "personalize." His Spearow is perched in the Train Station, on a support beam. He doesn't seem to really be caring about things
  33. [18:09] * Karsten is just sitting on the bench watching the game, for now, though his eyes are occasionally drawn to the woman nearby.
  34. [18:09] <@KamenWriter> Karsten: It is somewhat strange. She's a woman, but her uniform says she's the same rank as you, and she isn't dressed like the nurses that titter and giggle off to the side away from the men.
  35. [18:10] <@KamenWriter> Also, she's got a rucksack and a gun
  36. [18:10] <@KamenWriter> It's like she's like any other soldier.
  37. [18:10] <Karsten> "...Are you a nurse?" he asks, curiously, not really sure why there's a woman in the ranks. "No, you have a proper uniform, don't you?"
  38. [18:11] * Elsa brushes through Anbruch's fur idly, turning to Karsten, "Me? Oh, no. I'm afraid many men would be in poor hands if I was."
  39. [18:13] * Karsten thinks better of his manners and then tips his hat-or-helmet to the lady. "Karsten Blum, by the way, ma'am. I'm a field medic."
  40. [18:13] * Chatters drinks a little bit more and eyes one of the women in the ranks, a sort of condescending look on his face
  41. [18:14] * Elsa looks past him briefly, smiling as she looks back, "Pleasure to meet you, my name is Elsa. You do us all a service by treating those in the fields."
  42. [18:15] <@KamenWriter> A cheer rises from the game as someone takes a big hand.
  43. [18:16] <Karsten> He laughs. "I'm going to do my best for our country, that's for sure." He looks back over to the gin game for a moment.
  44. [18:17] * Chatters looks over the Gin game and laughs slightly. "Yes yes, good hand private"
  45. [18:18] * Karsten tries to figure out how to pry further about her assignment without being rude, but finally decides better of it. Surely the higherups know what they're doing.
  46. [18:19] <@KamenWriter> Just FYI, a Captain(Rudiger) has just announced hs presence. He outranks you and has given a complement to one of the privates.
  47. [18:19] <@KamenWriter> Several of the more disciplined men stand at attention.
  48. [18:20] * Elsa turns and stands straight, still holding Anbruch though
  49. [18:20] * Karsten stands and salutes
  50. [18:20] <@KamenWriter> Rudiger, you are beening stood to attention at by several fresh-faced privates who don't know better. What do?
  51. [18:21] * Chatters looks very serious for a second and points at Karsten. "You, come here."
  52. [18:22] * Elsa nods a quick goodbye to Karsten, turning back to the game
  53. [18:23] <Karsten> "Sir?" he sets his shuckle down and nods to Elsa, then hurries over.
  54. [18:24] <Chatters> "What's your name, and who is the lady you were speaking to??" He inspects your uniforma a little
  55. [18:30] <Karsten> He salutes again. "Private Karsten Blum, sir, field medic. And... she said her name was Elsa, sir."
  56. [18:32] <Chatters> "Right." He points. "Elsa, come stand next to Private Blum."
  57. [18:34] * Elsa motions to Wyrda the Growlithe to stop smelling around and follow her over to the captain, "Sir?"
  58. [18:36] <Chatters> "Right you look like fresh faces so let me let in one secret of this Company during off-time..." He turns and stares directly at Karsten and then Elsa, then laughs heartily. "Try not to let the war get to you too much. At least when not out there. Out there I have express permission to be a hardass." He holds up his flask and offers it
  59. [18:39] * Elsa smiles, shaking her head, "It's still a little early for me."
  60. [18:39] * Chatters laughs "That will change soon!"
  61. [18:40] * Karsten hesitantly takes the flask and downs a little, before handing it back. "Thank you, sir." he says, maybe wincing depending on how strong that stuff was. "Is it that bad, sir?"
  62. [18:42] <Chatters> "Depends, do you like having a liver?"
  63. [18:42] <Karsten> "I meant the war, sir."
  64. [18:42] * Karsten then realizes maybe he did too
  65. [18:44] * Elsa drops the smile, listening to his response
  66. [18:44] * Chatters turns away a bit. ".... Do you like having a liver?"
  67. [18:45] * Karsten bites his lip. "Very much, sir."
  68. [18:46] <Chatters> "It's been... Quite hard for some... Harder for others." He directs his attention to a man sitting alone at a table. "Sergeant Abend over there lost both his brothers in the trenches not long ago."
  69. [18:47] * Chatters shakes his head. "It's quite... disheartening to say the least."
  70. [18:47] * Karsten falls quiet a moment, nodding. What a damn careless question that was.
  71. [18:48] <Karsten> "I... see."
  72. [18:48] <@KamenWriter> Sergent Abend is in fact one of the men drinking. He sits by, quietly.
  73. [18:48] <Karsten> "Well, sir, I'm hoping I'll be able to save as many lives as I can."
  74. [18:49] <Chatters> "Yes yes, most Medics are..." He turns. "Hopefully, you'll do an adequate job."
  75. [18:52] <Elsa> "Don't worry, you will be able to do much good out there. Just remember to keep the future in sight."
  76. [18:52] * Chatters turns to Elsa. "But... Is this future bright?"
  77. [18:53] <Chatters> "Sure, the Central Powers shall be victorious but... Things are changing"
  78. [18:53] <Elsa> "Of course, that's what we're fighting for."
  79. [18:55] * Karsten glances the way of Sgt. Abend a moment, before looking down at Edelweiss. He's still at attention or he'd probably pick the Bulbasaur up. "We'll make it bright, sir. I think Germany has a lot to look forward to in the coming years."
  80. [18:56] * Elsa nods, "After the war is over, the future can be made ever brighter."
  81. [18:58] <Chatters> "Right right... Fresh faced optimistic soldiers... We certainly need those." He shakes his head a bit and smiles. "But enough talk about war and what not. There will be plenty of time for that!"
  82. [19:00] * Elsa sets Anbruch down and looks over to Edel, "He looks very well taken care of, Karsten."
  83. [19:01] <Chatters> "Yes quite the companion you have"
  84. [19:01] <Karsten> "Oh! Of course." he finally breaks his stance to pick up the Bulbasaur. "I treat both Edelweiss and Saft the best I can. They've been at my side for years."
  85. [19:02] <Karsten> "Both of them actually have some medicinal uses, too..." he comments with a smile. "Well, less medicinal in Edelweiss's case, and more.."
  86. [19:03] <Karsten> "Well, I've been training to try and harvest spores and seeds from grass pokemon in case of field emergencies."
  87. [19:04] <Elsa> "I'm impressed, you certainly seem to be shooting for higher goals."
  88. [19:04] <Chatters> "Yes, quite the aspirations Private Blum... And you Private Elsa. What are you plans?"
  89. [19:06] * Karsten looks up, a bit curious himself.
  90. [19:08] <Elsa> "As you might tell, I am not quite as specialized as Karsten, Wyrda and Anbruch were my closest friends. I simply will be putting forth my talents to assist with the effort as best I can. From my time with the war ministry I have polished out several languages."
  91. [19:09] <Elsa> "If there are any communications or citizens that speak french or russian, I should be able to help."
  92. [19:09] <Chatters> "Ah, a polyglot? Quite handy, if I say so myself."
  93. [19:09] <Elsa> "Before I simply handled much paperwork related to the war."
  94. [19:10] * Chatters nods and strokes his mustache
  95. [19:11] <Karsten> "Actually... I can speak Italian myself." he brings up. "We had family that way that we visited before... well, you know."
  96. [19:12] * Elsa nods, not commenting on it
  97. [19:12] * Chatters nods and looks. "I speak English. If that counts." He laughs and takes a swig of his flask
  98. [19:15] * Karsten just nods. ."It's good we have skilled soldiers either way." He looks at Wyrda a moment, Edelweiss seems a bit nervous.
  99. [19:17] * Elsa scratches at the growlithe's neck, letting Wyrda lean against her leg
  100. [19:17] <Karsten> "She seems friendly..." he smiles.
  101. [19:17] <Chatters> "Oh, my old friend is around. He's not too social." He points to the train station as a bird flies down and lands on Chatter's shoulders
  102. [19:18] <Elsa> "Very much so, my father was actually a little upset. He had hoped for another guard growlithe, but Wyrda was much too friendly."
  103. [19:19] <Elsa> "Now Wyrda's father guards the home while both father and I are out."
  104. [19:19] * Karsten nods.
  105. [19:19] * Elsa laughs, "We are both oddballs in this lot."
  106. [19:23] <Karsten> "I'm a bit interested at why they assigned a woman to the field myself." he admits. "I guess that just means your skills are exceptional. I don't know if we'll be seeing much of each other once we're all deployed, but either way, I think it'll be an honor to serve with you, Elsa, Captain."
  107. [19:24] * Chatters coughs. "Yes I am a bit.... apprenhensive to have a woman out in the field"
  108. [19:27] * Elsa smiles and nods, "I will try my best to not get in the way of those more capable."
  109. [19:30] <Chatters> "Good." He says matter of factly.
  110. [19:32] <Elsa> "While I'm anxious waiting, I'm slightly excited about heading east. I have only ever been west from Germany."
  111. [19:32] <Chatters> "Ah I have been to the Ottoman Empire many a time." He looks at Elsa. "Quite the... Place"
  112. [19:34] <Karsten> "I haven't been out that way, myself..."
  113. [19:37] <Chatters> "There are lots of exotic creatures there."
  114. [19:37] <Chatters> He releases a strange looking Flyingscorpion creautre thingy
  115. [19:37] * Karsten blinks in surprise. "What... is that?"
  116. [19:38] * Elsa raises her eyebrow, "Fascinating."
  117. [19:39] <Chatters> "They said they named, but I couldn't understand what they were saying, so I named him Boelcke"
  118. [19:40] <@KamenWriter> It certainly is a flying scorpion. How terrifying.
  119. [19:41] <Chatters> "At least... I believe it's a he"
  120. [19:42] <@KamenWriter> You've certainly seen little house skorupi before. They aren't common, but you get them sometimes in the south nearer to the Mediterranean. Most don't even evolve unless trained. The ones across the sea in North Africa are far more intimidating. However, Flying Skorupi are an oddity that you might not have seen before.
  121. [19:45] <Elsa> "I imagine he is happy enough as Boelcke if he hasn't let you know otherwise."
  122. [19:46] <Karsten> "...I hope it doesn't get much bigger than that." he pales a bit.
  123. [19:46] * Chatters shrugs.
  124. [19:48] <Chatters> "Who knows with these exotic things"
  125. [19:54] <Elsa> "Do either of you have girls waiting for you to after you get back?"
  126. [19:54] * Chatters looks at Elsa incredibly codly. "No." Firm and solid
  127. [19:55] * Elsa pauses, then nods, "I apologize for overstepping."
  128. [19:58] <Chatters> "Right, private"
  129. [19:59] * Karsten shakes his head. "No, I never did find anyone. Don't mind admitting that. What about you?"
  130. [19:59] * Chatters does not look directly at Elsa, and just looks in the distance
  131. [20:01] <Elsa> "No, much to mothers displeasure, I worked and then went home. Nothing much else."
  132. [20:03] <Karsten> "Lack of interest, or...? Actually, I guess that's not my business, sorry."
  133. [20:05] * Elsa shrugs, "Not many opportunities presented themselves back home."
  134. [20:06] <Elsa> "I'm from Meppen, by the way."
  135. [20:06] <Elsa> "Not the most bustling area."
  136. [20:06] <Karsten> "Solingen, it's pretty nice..."
  137. [20:07] * Karsten thinks about that. "Meppen isn't too far away, actually..."
  138. [20:08] <Elsa> "I haven't personally been."
  139. [20:09] <Karsten> "What's your family like, then?"
  140. [20:10] <@KamenWriter> (When conversation slows down, the train will arrive.)
  141. [20:10] * Chatters sits and listens
  142. [20:10] <@KamenWriter> (I might as well take you guys as far as the Allies have gotten so you guys will be at more or less the same place.)
  143. [20:10] <Chatters> "Please don't mind me sitting, I'm getting old"
  144. [20:12] <Karsten> (Aha)
  145. [20:12] <Elsa> "You don't look a year past 20, sir." She smiles, "Besides all the associated aunts and uncles that come from living in a small town, it was only my parents and me. Mother stayed home when father and I both went to contribute to the effort."
  146. [20:15] <Karsten> He nods, fiddling with a dark green cloth bracelet that was mostly concealed by his uniform cuff. "I worry because no one's at home to watch over my mother and sister... I hope they'll be alright..."
  147. [20:15] <Chatters> "I'm sure they are fine."
  148. [20:16] <Elsa> "Mothers must become tough, to deal with rambunctious children. She will be alright."
  149. [20:17] <@KamenWriter> Alright.
  150. [20:17] <Karsten> He laughs. "I hope you're right, Elsa. My father's in the service, too... Our family has a bit of military history."
  151. [20:18] <@KamenWriter> As you talk amongst yourselves, you can see the train approaching in the distance and the officers are beginning to make the rounds, calling the people to order and to attention.
  152. [20:19] * Chatters stands up. He clears his throat. "ALL RIGHT SOLDIERS, ENOUGH CHIT CHAT, LET'S GET GOING!"
  153. [20:19] <Elsa> "Do you mind if I tag along with into your train car?"
  154. [20:20] * Elsa gathers her things together and picks Anbruch back up
  155. [20:20] * Chatters looks around a bit and turns away from Elsa. "Why not, come alone, both of you." He whistles as his assorted flying creatures land near him
  156. [20:21] * Karsten nods and heads along. "Sure, Elsa. Come on, Edelweiss..." he says, picking up his Shuckle.
  157. [20:21] <@KamenWriter> The soldiers take up most of the train, with a few cars for civilians towards the back. Not many civilians are there.
  158. [20:21] * Karsten raises an eyebrow, but heads along.
  159. [20:21] <@KamenWriter> There's no assigned seating. As far as they're concerned, as long as you check in with your CO when you get there, it doesn't matter where you ride.
  160. [20:22] * Elsa follows
  161. [20:22] <Karsten> Edelweiss plods along behind Karsten as he goes in, and he does the prerequisite checking in.
  162. [20:22] <@KamenWriter> You find three seats all together, but the group is packed in fairly tight. For as many cars as there are, there are still more soldiers.
  163. [20:23] * Chatters sits down after boarding train, returning his pokemon. "Squash in, we have more soldiers coming"
  164. [20:23] <@KamenWriter> You can continue your conversation, but you will be talking over a constant stream of laughter and dirty jokes.
  165. [20:24] * Elsa returns Wyrda and Anbruch, turning her nose up at some of the jokes
  166. [20:25] <@KamenWriter> When they see a woman on the car, naturally it gets awkward for some of the less wanton recruits, but some of the men just don't care and go on telling the one about the three-legged dutchman or the one where an englishwoman, a Frenchwoman, and a German woman walk into a Biergarden.
  167. [20:25] <@KamenWriter> *garten
  168. [20:26] <@KamenWriter> And yeah, for the first hour, the train ride is uneventful. Other than the trolley coming around and passing out refreshments, and the soldiers passing around and sharing refreshments of their own, it's a fairly uneventful ride.
  169. [20:26] * Karsten oofs and tries to make the best of the situation. He returns Edelweiss but keeps Saft in his lap.
  170. [20:26] * Chatters stays silent most of the ride
  171. [20:27] * Karsten probably just makes conversation with Elsa about his family or hometown or something boring.
  172. [20:27] <@KamenWriter> Berlin melts into the German country side. You can see Pretty mountains through the window.
  173. [20:27] <@KamenWriter> You see some Pidove wheel through the sky. Odd. You don't see Pidove very often in the wild anymore.
  174. [20:28] * Elsa sets to untying and tying her hair up, idly talking with Karsten, holding onto the red ribbon carefully
  175. [20:28] <@KamenWriter> Pidove are usually shot on sight, because both sides use Pidove to send messages.
  176. [20:29] <@KamenWriter> Soon, however, you seem to be approaching a tunnel.
  177. [20:29] <@KamenWriter> You're near the front, and the tracks curve, so you have a fairly good view ahead of the train.
  178. [20:29] <@KamenWriter> If you look out the window that is
  179. [20:30] * Elsa narrows her eyes at the pidoves, looking around and out the window
  180. [20:31] <@KamenWriter> Nothing too strange.
  181. [20:31] <@KamenWriter> Soon enough, you enter the tunnel. There is little light within the traincar, so you are plunged into partial darkness as you enter.
  182. [20:32] <@KamenWriter> As your eyes acclimate to the darkness, the three of you see a strange figure in the gloom.
  183. [20:32] <@KamenWriter> He is sitting among the soldiers, but he's not wearing a german uniform. He's wearing no uniform you've ever seen. You can't see his face in the darkness, and you can barely see his figure, but the shape is all wrong.
  184. [20:33] * Karsten squints.
  185. [20:33] <@KamenWriter> You can't make out much in the darkness but his uniform is blue.
  186. [20:33] <Karsten> "Hmm...?"
  187. [20:33] * Chatters looks confused.
  188. [20:33] <Karsten> "..."
  189. [20:33] <Chatters> "... Maybe my eyes aren't as good as they used to be...."
  190. [20:34] * Chatters reaches in his coat pocket and pulls out a pair of glasses, and slips them on
  191. [20:34] <@KamenWriter> It doesn't help much
  192. [20:34] <@KamenWriter> Also, red as you please, he wears a bright red flower with a black spot in the center pinned to his breast in lieu of medals.
  193. [20:34] <Elsa> "Sir?"
  194. [20:35] <Chatters> "Hmmm.... That looks very strange."
  195. [20:36] <@KamenWriter> No one else seems to notice the man but you. The other soldiers talk around and through him, but not to him.
  196. [20:36] <Karsten> "Do you know who that is, sir?"
  197. [20:36] <Chatters> "I do not."
  198. [20:36] * Elsa slowly reaches for her pistol, "What are you doing here?"
  199. [20:37] <@KamenWriter> The man does not react to Elsa's question, but you can feel eyes upon you suddenly. You did not see his face turn in the darkness.
  200. [20:37] <@KamenWriter> You hear a voice come from the man:
  201. [20:37] <@KamenWriter> "What the hell are you looking at?"
  202. [20:37] <@KamenWriter> And then the traincar is bathed in light. You've exited the tunnel.
  203. [20:38] <@KamenWriter> And in place of the man, there is a very confused and disturbed-looking soldier. He seems weirded out by you three staring at him so intensely.
  204. [20:39] * Elsa drops her hand, looking around nervously
  205. [20:39] <Karsten> "Huh?"
  206. [20:39] * Chatters blinks. "Soldier, thought you were someone else."
  207. [20:40] <@KamenWriter> "Uh. Yessir." says the soldier, "Sorry, sir?"
  208. [20:40] * Karsten turns to the other two and whispers quietly, "Are we the only ones that noticed...? That's odd...really odd..."
  209. [20:40] <Elsa> "I'm sorry, in that light it was very odd." She smiles and turns back to look straight ahead
  210. [20:41] <@KamenWriter> However, before you can think about it too much, you suddenly hear someone scream out, "Oh my god! Look!"
  211. [20:41] * Chatters nods and waves him off a bit before leaning into the two a bit. "I think.... The war might be getting to me"
  212. [20:41] <Karsten> ???
  213. [20:41] * Chatters turns and looks. "Where?"
  214. [20:41] * Elsa tenses and looks
  215. [20:41] <@KamenWriter> Following the scream, you see a terrified soldier looking out the window.
  216. [20:42] <@KamenWriter> You follow his gaze. You can see clearly from the curve of the track.
  217. [20:42] <@KamenWriter> You are on the same track as another train, and that train is heading right for you!
  218. [20:42] <@KamenWriter> Suddenly, the car lurches. Someone pulled the brakes and you can hear the screech.
  219. [20:43] <@KamenWriter> From the sparks flying off of the other train, someone over there pulled the brakes as well.
  220. [20:43] * Elsa hisses between her teeth and attempts to brace somewhere
  221. [20:43] <@KamenWriter> However, both trains are moving far too fast, and collision is inevitable. You grab on tight and hold on!
  222. [20:43] <Elsa> "Well, it seems this journey was a short one. Best of luck to both of you."
  223. [20:44] * Chatters lurches forward, trying to hold his hands on the seat. "Damnit! Hold fast!"
  224. [20:44] <@KamenWriter> You hear a massive impact, and then feel it. Your world is spinning and you are consumed with vertigo as the train seems to lift into the air, flopping everyone around you around the train car like poppets.
  225. [20:44] * Karsten dives to protect Saft!
  226. [20:45] <@KamenWriter> There is screaming all around you, and then, all of a sudden, nothing.
  227. [20:45] <@KamenWriter> The world goes dark and you feel like you are nowhere.
  228. [20:45] <@KamenWriter> TO BE CONTINUED
  229. [20:45] <Karsten> Well that escalated quickly.
  230. [20:45] * Karsten is now known as Kain
  231. [20:47] * Chatters is now known as Gents
  232. [20:55] * Elsa is now known as Happymancer
