  15. Hello,
  16.
  17.
  18. The LinkIt_ONE_Hardware_Reference_Design_v1_0.zip archive available to download on LinkIt docs page contain no datasheets, there are just "Technical Brief" documents named as "datasheet". Links to distinct documents are point to the same "Technical Brief" versions.
  19.
  20.
  21. How can I obtain detailed datasheets/guides on MT2502 and companion chips of LinkIt? I mean guides with modes, addreses, registers, programming/configuration requirements and so on. Is such kind of docs are available?
  22.
  23.
  24. Thank you in advance,
  25. Dmitry

  39. If you download the "Hardware Board Reference Design" here, the zip file should contain the datasheet of MT2502.
  40.
  41. Alternatively, the datasheet of MT2502 Aster can also be found here.. You may need to log into your account first.

  55. Thank you for your answer, Steven.

  57.
  58. As I described before, I have "Hardware Board Reference Design" archive downloaded.
  59. It is LinkIt_ONE_Hardware_Reference_Design_v1_0.zip file.
  60.
  61.
  62. It contains the document file named as MediaTek_MT2502A_SOC_Data_Sheet_v1_0.pdf - it just named as datasheet, but it is not datasheet indeed.
  63.
  64.
  65. If you open it you can see it is not datasheet document. It is "MT2502A SOC Processor Technical Brief" and it have just 53 pages with a very little info. The same file is available to download as separate file on docs page.
  66.
  67.
  68. This document doesn't contain any detailed information I looking for. No addresses, no registers, no config/status bits, no modes and so on.. It is just a hi-level review of SoC and it is definitely not enough for any development besides arduino sketches.
  69.
  70.
  71. Here is a chance I missed detailed datasheet link, so would you be so kind to point me that document with URL?
  72.
  73. Thank you in advance,
  74. Dmitry

  88. Hihi Dmitry,
  89.
  90. Based on company's current policy, MT2502 chipset and full source code does not release to the retail market. It requires to sign a customer contract with Mediatek (with license fee) to get chipset, full source code and complete version of datasheet, which allows customer to develop more complex product.
  91.
  92. For makers and people making simple product, we assume they can use our SDK and Linkit ONE board and the MT2502 modules (planned to release in Q4) without touching too much details of the hardware.
  93.
  94. Thanks for your understanding
  95.
  96. Best regards,
  97. Bear Wang

  110. Thank you very much for your answer. Which person I have to contact for license/contract/fee questions?

  122. hi, dipspb
  123.
  124. Can you PM me your email and rough plan about the product which will use MT2502?
  125.
  126. I will find you a contact window.
  127.
  128. Thanks.

  140.
  141. The lack of full/proper documentation for the MTK chips used in this product make it completely uninteresting.
  142.
  143. At the very least, I would have expected the full electrical data sheet and full register level programming manual for the MT2502.
  144.
  145. So instead of creating a product that is attractive for people to really innovate, MTK is locking them up in a walled garden. Not only is the hardware not fully documented, but also the software is mostly (if not entirely) proprietary. Without providing hardware documentation, you don't even leave your users/customers the chance to implement their own open source software, or to port their preferred RTOS to the system.
  146.
  147. Also, you exclude the open source mobile communications communities (like osmocom.org) from porting their GSM stack on top of your baseband/DSP architecture.
  148.
  149. Of what use is the schematic of the Linkit board, if the electrical data sheet of the core components is not made available?
  150.
  151. Of what use is a product like the Linkit as a development board, if the MT2502 is not sold on the open market at the same time,
  152. allowing seamless steps from prototyping towards a custom board/product?
  153.
  154. I would like to strongly encourage MTK to re-think that position. Please compare that with other development platforms of other companies,
  155. whether it is Raspberry Pi, Beagleboard/Beaglebone, Arduino or any of the other products in that market. You can always get electrical data sheets of the uC/SoC used in those products, as well as register-level programming information for them.

  168. LaForge,
  169.
  170. We appreciate your suggestions and are taking them into consideration. They seem like reasonable requests, though some may take efforts beyond only documentation. As this is the first attempt we have made to introduce an offering like this, which is inclusive of a 3rd party hardware kit and an SDK, we were expecting there to be suggestions on how to make this more useful and to appeal to broader audiences of developers.
  171.
  172. If you are interested in the attributes of Aster, the underlying SoC for LinkIt for your wearable projects, then I suggest you stay tuned, and if you have more suggestions on how to improve the product or better support it, we'd be glad to get those comments.
  173.
  174. Regards,
  175. Marc
