1. I know this idea has been thrown around many times before and quickly shot down but I feel there may actually be more to this than first meets the eye. BW2 OU has a very poor reputation right now for having a lot of assorted problems with it (or at least, everybody has their own complaint). Some say it's too offensive, some say it's too matchup reliant, some say it's too shallow, some say Stealth Rock is breaking it, some say Hidden Power is too strong, etc, etc, etc. Most of the proposed solutions are various bans or a simple "deal with it". Unbans are quickly shot down and for, the most part, very good reasons. Of all the crazy ideas and solutions, there's one I want to propose for consideration. Intentionally introducing an overpowering and centralizing force to force playstyle and team diversity centered around it. To get an idea of what I'm talking about, look at Snorlax in GSC. I've never played it so those who have can correct me where I am wrong, but just about every GSC player agrees Snorlax is by far the most powerful and centralizing threat in the metagame. Why has it never been banned? Because as weird as it sounds it makes the metagame better.

3. So what Pokemon could possibly be the modern Snorlax? (ignore the title) I think Lugia could very well do the metagame the good it needs. For those unfamiliar with the Pokemon, take a look at this page for the details required. There's a lot to look at so to pull out the important bits we have a Pokemon with 106/90/130/90/154/110 and a Psychic/Flying typing. It has two abilities, Pressure and Multiscale. For physical attacks, noteworthy options are: Aqua Tail, Avalanche, Double Edge, Dragon Rush, Earthquake, Iron Head, Waterfall, and Zen Headbutt. Noteworthy special attacks are: Aeroblast, Blizzard, Dragon Pulse, Earth Power, Giga Drain, Hidden Power, Ice Beam, Psychic, Psycho Boost, Psyshock, Shadow Ball, Signal Beam, Surf, Thunder, Thunderbolt, and Weather Ball. Lastly, noteworthy support moves are: Calm Mind, Dragon Tail, FeatherDance, Hail, Light Screen, Mimic, Protect, Psych Up, Rain Dance, Recover, Reflect, Rest, Roar, Roost, Safeguard, Sandstorm, Skill Swap, Sleep Talk, Substitute, Sunny Day, Swagger, Tailwind, Thunder Wave, Toxic, Trick, and Whirlwind.

5. So what does this mean to OU? Well Lugia definitely has a very diverse movepool and an excellent stat distribution with two excellent abilities. The typing leaves one wanting but they both do bring some important offensive STABs and some useful defensive resistances. Defensively, it has amazing stats, movepool and abilities that'll allow it to wall a large portion of the metagame with ease and support the rest of the team. It's not unbreakable though, either. Some calcs to show what I'm talking about. (sorry no Hide tags :( )

33. and so on so forth. There are certainly threats that Lugia can be used to wall depending on its spread but it remains vulnerable to others. The speed + Multiscale will help a lot to come in and fast Roost off damage but then a set would be unable to stop certain boosting sweepers from breaking through. It would certainly give Stall that push it needs to become relevant again by giving it a wall that it can use to patch up various holes. Offense is not going to disappear, either, but it will be used to consider dedicated wall breakers and contribute teamslots to win in the Stall matchup. Balance also benefits from Lugia to have that flexibility to switch in and out of some powerful attacks while being able to pressure things itself. However, there's the other side of Lugia to consider. While in Ubers 90 attacking stats may in laughable, they are perfectly usable in OU especially with such a diverse movepool, high speed, access to Calm Mind, and the bulk to setup. Lugia could certainly be a monster but it is far from unstoppable itself.

47. It may have the movepool to beat every threat but it doesn't have the moveslots to run them all. It will also be missing some form of coverage move and Stall/Balance teams can even use their own Lugia to keep it in line.
48.
49. Overall, it's pretty safe to say that Lugia won't be 6-0ing entire teams. However, teams will likely need multiple checks to handle the various sets and a large part of the battles will be in determining the other's Lugia set. Fortunately, each team will likely have their own Lugia to defend against the other should the need arise. Keep in mind that the point is to introduce something centralizing and game defining, yet beatable, so that teams will have to adapt to and incorporate the Pokemon into their teams in a way that opens up more options than before. The fact that it's defenses largely outweighs it's offenses means that a defensive Lugia will always beat an offensive pushing a favor towards slower, more defensive teams. (since Lugia would be the centralizing force) I'm not going to claim to have perfect insight in the matter, there's a lot to theorymon and discuss which is why I want to present the idea to you guys. How do you think the metagame will shift if Lugia were introduced? Would it eventually adapt and become better for it or would there be some obscure set that dominates teams? Remember, the whole point is to reconsider our current mentality when it comes to suspect testing to see if doing something that intentionally centralizes the metagame actually benefits it.
