  28.
  29. Overview:
  30. The Jackal was designed by the now famous Vining Engineering and Salvage Team
  31. (VEST) in conjunction with Marik's Earthwerks BattleMech factory on Keystone.
  32. VEST began as a five-person BattleMech salvage operation on Solaris VII and in
  33. seven months has grown into one of the most innovative design groups for
  34. battlefield technology in the Inner Sphere.
  35.
  36. The key to Vining Engineering's approach is that the designers study and
  37. analyze the combat conditions up close, then engineer to meet the needs of the
  38. MechWarriors. In reviewing Clan tactics during the initial wave of attacks on
  39. Carse and Nox, the design team determined that 'Mechs capable on inflicting
  40. concentrated damage at long range would be the most useful to Inner Sphere
  41. commanders.
  42.
  43.
  44. Capabilities:
  45. For the structure of the Jackal, VEST used a prototype Hollis Mark VI endo
  46. steel frame as the basis for their design. Drawing on first-hand experience of
  47. the Clans gained through salvaging operations, the engineers tackled the
  48. problem of manufacturing a hard-hitting BattleMech with the armor and defenses
  49. to hang in for a prolonged fight against superior Clan firepower.
  50.
  51. In order to sell their design, VEST offered it to a promising new stable on
  52. Solaris VII, where the 'Mech took part in several matches. The Jackal proved to
  53. be a deadly hunter 'Mech. With speed and firepower equally balanced, it was
  54. able to slowly chew away at its opposition before the enemy could close for a
  55. kill. Earthwerks was so impressed with the 'Mechs's performance that they
  56. purchased the design immediately.
  57.
  58. The core of the Jackal's firepower is the Aberdovey Mk XXX extended range PPC.
  59. Mounted in the 'Mech's upper right shoulder, the weapon has proved easy to
  60. service. Rather than waste space on static discharge coil systems, the VEST
  61. designers simply allowed for rear discharge; when the Jackal fires its PPC,
  62. there is a blast of blue static electricity out to the back of the 'Mech to the
  63. rear of the PPC mount. Though it is not dangerous, the rear discharge is a
  64. menacing sight, silhouetting the Jackal during night operations.
  65.
  66.
  67. Deployment:
  68. Quite a few of these new BattleMechs have been sold to House Liao and deployed
  69. along their Periphery border with the Magistracy of Canopus. In the very
  70. limited engagements occurring there, the Jackal has served as a highly
  71. effective deterrent to the typical Periphery board raiders/pirates.
  72.
  73. The Federated Commonwealth has also expressed interest in procuring a shipment
  74. of Jackals, but their order has been delayed by the notorious tangle of red
  75. tape created by the Free Worlds League's bureaucracy. MIIO operatives believe
  76. that the delays are intentional rather that coincidental. According to
  77. unofficial sources, the Jackal was designed to be a commodity shared only by
  78. Houses Liao and Marik
