- Hello guys,
- I am a linux user since a long time. In this time most linux distributions went through an rough evolution with there init systems. In the last 10 years I had linux system that used BSD-init, SysV-init, initNG, Upstart, Systemd and many others.
- Every now and then I was looking at FreeBSD, and the last time I looked (yesterday) it still used the old shell-script-based bsd-init. Through I have to admit that a shell-script-based init-system bribes with its simplicity, I would nether want to miss some of the features of systemd e.g. multithreaded startup, socket activation, complex dependency solver, ... .
- On the other hand, I really want to miss the over systemd features: complex configs, unclear administration and debugging tools, ...
- Now my question:
- I saw that there are projects that try to implement some of this features on FreeBSD (jobd and nosh). But they look inactive, complicate to install and not well supported.
- Are there "major" plans to adapt the "good" systemsd features on FreeBSD?
- In my eyes, FreeBSD has now the unique possibility to learn from the mistakes that the Linux distributions did, and to start with a clean, well designed, robust, feature proofed, init system.
- Sorry for the long email,
- Greetings, Eddy
- PS. Thank you for the greate show :-)
