- Why I Quit Twitter by Joss Whedon
- =================================
- First of all, I want to apologize to all of my real fans and true supporters out there. You guys are fantastic and you're the reason I'm able to keep making my art the way I want to make it. I'm leaving twitter for a while because it's become a really toxic part of my life, but before I go I just want to explain my side of things so that people have all the information.
- I'll start at the beginning. This Friday a little movie I directed called The Avengers: Age of Ultron came out. I'm very proud of it. Like all of my work, it was a delightful surprise that lots of adults went to see the movie in addition to the 3-5 year-old target demographic. I love my adult fans to death, and it's such high praise to have grown humans with functioning brains consider my shows and movies to be legitimate entertainment, but I always have been and always will be someone who writes for an audience of toddlers.
- Unfortunately, sometimes when adults watch my work they try to bring adult concerns to what are, at the end of the day, loud and colorful diversions for small babies with soft heads. In particular, my new movie seems to have become a target for intersectional feminists. Now, I'm a feminist myself, something I like to keep close to the vest. But intersectional feminism is another animal--it is one of the most conceptually challenging and notoriously tricky philosophies out there. I'm a brilliant and wealthy man, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I just cannot wrap my head around it. No matter how often I patiently listen to leading intersectional feminists explain it with relevant pop culture examples and emoji punctuation, I simply cannot grasp the abstract and subtle concepts it traffics in.
- Anyways, apparently I violated some major tenets of intersectional feminism when I had Captain America use the c-word in the new movie. Maybe I should seen this coming, but honestly I was mostly concerned with getting a giggle from my toddler audience. Long story short, I got a bunch of mean tweets with the dot in front sent to me, and I had a pretty heavy anxiety attack. I'm headed offline to heal.
- Before I go, though, I want address allegations that I was creeping in a teen's DMs. They're patently false. I *accidentally* DMed @TrillDirtHead (whose admittedly fire selfies I had not seen) because I thought it was the new Dwayne gimmick. They have similar follower counts. It was an honest mistake.
- Sincerely,
- Joss
