  1. I could never fight. It just wasn't in me. And with the way my shoulder was, I wouldn't be able to do much of anything against him.
  2.
  3. Steeling myself, I prepared to make my great escape. This was it.
  4.
  5. The footsteps grew louder and louder. He must have been right outside. I only had once chance to do this right.
  6.
  7. Swallowing any doubts I may have had, I jumped into action.
  8.
  9. I barreled out of the darkness and into the street. I caught a glimpse of Chief to my left, staggering backwards, caught off-guard by my sudden appearance.
  10.
  11. I made sure to throw myself in the opposite direction, frantically picking myself up off the ground as I broke into a mad dash for my life.
  12.
  13. If I just kept running, I would surely run into someone. The entire city couldn't be deserted, even at this time of the night. Maybe I could run into a group of people, or maybe even a poli--
  14.
  15. Something collided with my back, followed by a dull thud. My legs stopped of their own accord. My arms were left flailing helplessly as I plummeted to the ground.
  16.
  17. My body went numb. My vision grew hazy. My arms wouldn't respond to my desperate commands. I couldn't move a single muscle.

  20.
  21. At that moment, I finally understood what had happened.
  22.
  23. I had... lost. Of course running wasn't going to work. There was more to the nervous business man than met the eye. He had always been able to keep up with me no matter how far I ran beforehand.
  24.
  25. Although I lay here dying, I felt nothing. I should have been scared. Terrified that my life was coming to an abrupt end. But I didn't shed a single tear.
  26.
  27. Maybe I was physically incapable of doing so at this point, as bit by bit, the functions of my body shut down.
  28.
  29. Like lights being switched off one by one, eventually the only thing remaining was my barely coherent consciousness.
  30.
  31. And...
  32.
  33. I felt...
  34.
  35. Everything...
  36.
  37. Fade...
  38.
  39. To...
  40.
  41. Black...
