Transition Signals
---
For Reasons

pattern 1 = adverbial + comma + sentence
First of all, the food is delicious. (First / To begin with / Firstly)
Second, the service is fast and cheerful. (Secondly / Additionally / Furthermore)
(Third / Fourth / etc.)
Lastly, the prices are low. (Finally / Last but not least)
	(“finally” gives the last supporting point, NOT the conclusion)

pattern 2 = the ---- reason is + noun phrase OR the ---- reason is that + sentence
The first reason is the delicious food. / The first reason is that the food is delicious.
The second reason is that the service is fast and cheerful.
The third reason is…
One reason is… / Another reason is…
The last/final reason is…

For Examples

For example, the servers are always smiling.
For instance, the servers are always smiling.
As an example, … / To give one/another example, …

One/Another example is the cheeseburger. It only costs…

sentence + comma + such as + nouns

The sentence can restate the topic sentence, or it can give a specific recommendation:
For these three reasons, Joe’s Diner is the best place in town.
For these three reasons, everyone should try Joe’s Diner when they’re in town.

If you’re looking for great food, amazing service, and good prices, give Joe’s Diner a try.

Brainstorm a list of reasons for why someone should try the food in that city.
Add a few specific examples for each reason, if you can.
Edit your list. (Cross out reasons that aren’t so important or that don’t have examples. Add details or additional examples to the ones that are important.)
Choose an order for your reasons and examples and write an outline. Write a title, a topic sentence, and a concluding sentence.
