Content: Students entering WRIT 121 should be able to:
 Use pre‐writing techniques somewhat effectively.
 Write essays that are generally clear and focused.
 Formulate thesis statements that are generally clear and focused.
 Develop ideas with relevant personal details and examples where appropriate [some
unevenness may occur].
 Demonstrate some ability to reflect on a piece of writing.
 Develop ideas with relevant details and examples where appropriate from other
writings [some unevenness may occur].
Structure: Students entering WRIT 121 should be able to:
 Write essays whose structure is at least functional.
 Write introductory, body and concluding paragraphs that are generally effective.
 Use transitions somewhat effectively to link ideas.
Style: Students entering WRIT 121 should be able to:
 Write sentences that are varied, clear, and reasonably well punctuated.
 Show a command of language and word choice that supports meaning.
Mechanics: Students entering WRIT 121 should be able to:
 Write sentences that reflect adequate (or better) mastery of grammar and spelling.
