  7.
  8. You mentioned me in relation to a hackernews thread that mentioned
  9. #bitcoin-assets, this one:
  10. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8795280
  11.
  12. You asked "<< is this ninjashogun posing as a woman". No, I didn't post it.
  13.
  14.
  15. I didn't post in that thread and would not post there. If I *had *(which I
  16. refrain from as a rule) I would have posted,
  17.
  18. "I found #bitcoin-assets a complete waste of my time, extremely uncivil and
  19. the only genuinely troll community I have ever tried to engage with. I
  20. think anyone who likes the community here on HN will be extremely put off
  21. and consider it a complete waste of time. This is by design: several of
  22. the posters are active here as well, where they behave civilly and in a way
  23. that contributes, but this is not the culture that is encouraged there. Of
  24. course, you're free to try it. Nobody has voice there unless an operator
  25. gives you one, and the direction of the conversation is carefully
  26. controlled by its operators. Despite constant name-calling that extends to
  27. the level of slander, it's a logged forum so you will want to take this
  28. into consideration."
  29.
  30. It's instructive to look at the fact that Hacker News is a forum run by
  31. YCombinator, which has made 716 investments to date. (How many have you
  32. made, Mr. Popescu - not an insignificant number, either - perhpas by now
  33. percentage points of that number.) How has it been doing? The 716
  34. investments to date have a market cap in excess of $30 billion - this is
  35. just ones that have had priced investment rounds recently, with 2
  36. companies, Airbnb and DropBox, worth over $10 billion each.
  37.

  39.
  40. Collectively the companies have raised over $3 billion in cash.
  41. YCombinator is built for the long game, and there is a good chance that the
  42. true present discounted value of the companies it has already invested in -
  43. even if it never made another investment - is in excess of $100 billion.
  44. (Based on companies that are very early in their trajectory and that have
  45. not raised their Series A yet, or based on ones that are clearly intending
  46. to continue growing at an exponential rate. YC recently invested in a
  47. fusion power-plant startup for example.)
  48.
  49. It is instructive to look at the commenting guidelines on YCombinator's own
  50. 'echo chamber', Hackernews. The link is here -
  51. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
  52.

  55.
  56. Be civil. Don't say things you wouldn't say in a face to face conversation.
  57.
  58. When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names.
  59. E.g. "That is an idiotic thing to say; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened
  60. to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3."
  61.
  62. Please avoid introducing classic flamewar topics unless you have something
  63. genuinely new to say about them.
  64.
  65. Please don't sign comments, especially with your url. They're already
  66. signed with your username. If other users want to learn more about you,
  67. they can click on it to see your profile.
  68.
  69. Please don't use uppercase for emphasis. If you want to emphasize a word or
  70. phrase, put *asterisks* around it and it will get italicized.
  71.
  72. Please don't submit comments complaining that a submission is inappropriate
  73. for the site. If you think something is spam or offtopic, flag it by going
  74. to its page and clicking on the "flag" link. (Not all users will see this;
  75. there is a karma threshold.) If you flag something, please don't also
  76. comment that you did.
  77.
  78. If your account is less than a year old, please don't submit comments
  79. saying that HN is turning into Reddit. (It's a common semi-noob illusion.)
  80.
  81. Resist complaining about being downmodded. It never does any good, and it
  82. makes boring reading.
  83.
  84. Please don't bait other users by inviting them to downmod you.
  85.
  86.
  87.
  88. What is interesting is that these guidelines could be almost literally
  89. reversed to get the posting guidelines for #bitcoin-assets:
  90.
  91. *In Comments*
  92.
  93. *Don't *be civil. Don't say things you would say in a face to face
  94. conversation, this is the Internet.
  95.
  96. When disagreeing, please do *call people names*. e.g. why write "1 + 1 is
  97. 2, not 3.", when you can write "*that is fucking idiotic*; 1 + 1 is 2, not
  98. 3"
  99.
  100. *Do introduce* classic flamewar topics even if you have nothing new to say
  101. about them.
  102.
  103. etc
  104.
  105. Some of the other guidelines could apply, I suppose, but don't translate
  106. directly to IRC. Mainly the stylistic ones do.
  107.
  108. I object to the way you run bitcoin-assets and think the only end-result
  109. will be the same as a certain channel that I joined on freenode that I
  110. noticed had this description:
  111.
  112. Welcome to #____. The only rules are terms of the Freenode Network. *Ops
  113. reserve the right to kick/ban/ridicule & threaten disruptive, uninteresting
  114. and ignorant users at will. This channel is rated R. If you can't handle
  115. the language and are under the age of 18, please leave.*
  116.
  117.
  118. What is interesting is that the channel was a ghost town, and had zero
  119. users in it. I was the only one, along with ChanServ, nobody had been
  120. there for years.
  121.
  122. I saw you complain about sexy_saffron leaving. (And I consider it likely
  123. you posted a 'rebuttal' with a fake signature on that link, given your MO.)
  124. While I *didn't *think her comment on HN was great (being a rich man or
  125. not doesn't really matter, it's more the general tone and behavior that's
  126. trollish), I think it's a good example of people leaving. (Though who
  127. knows - both the post and the rebuttal were from a brand new account on HN,
  128. it could be someone trolling or parodying that style.)
  129.
  130. On the more genuine forum of HN, I have over 1300 points to Adlai's 84 and
  131. Bboingo's 6, and 1100 on a previous user. Nobody cares about troll
  132. aggression there, it just gets downvoted and disappears. Real
  133. contributions are valued, and, of course, anyone can contribute.
  134.
  135. It's your choice which kind of a forum you want. One that historically
  136. speaking has resulted in people actually leaving and it becoming a ghost
  137. town, or one that historically speaking results in a vibrant, welcoming,
  138. and open community with a free exchange of thoughts where the best thoughts
  139. - and not loudest, rudest attacks - win.
  140.
  141. I have no interest in participating in the former, and very, very few
  142. people do, which is why I have stopped visiting.
  143.
  144.
  145. Robert
