Let me explain.

Dionysius was a tyrant of Syracuse, a city in Magna graecia, the greek area of southern italy in fourth century BC. To anyone who might look at him, he seemed rich and comfortable, with every luxury money could buy, stylish clothing, and many jewels and expensive foods.

He even had court flatterers, people whose job was just to compliment him, inflate his ego. One of these such people was Damocles. Damocles agreed readily, and so Dionysius ordered everything be prepared for Damocles, so Damocles could experience that kind of life. Damocles enjoyed himself immensely - until, of course, he noticed a sharp sword hovering over his head, that was suspended from the ceiling by a single horse hair.

Dionysius explained then that this is what the life of a ruler is really like, you see. Wile much is good and lavish, while trust is given and mercy shown, in an instant it can all be gone with one mistake, one fell movement.
