  1. There was the sky, there was the sun, and there was the existence entire.
  2. Children sat on a hill, whispering to each other about the story untold. The ocean and the sky were different hues of blue and a salted breeze blew the green grass into a recurring wave. I wrapped the scarf around my neck and looked at the girl with her amber iris’s, like gems in milk. She tucked a wild strand of hair behind an ear and smiled faintly, those amber eyes glistening with an abnormal allure.
  3. “In the darkness,” the girl whispered as her voice broke.
  4. She wiped her eyes and commenced again. “The darkest darkness you can imagine, there was a man who wandered through oblivion. He was not lonely or without love, but he and his love were scared until the day they let themselves be known.”
  5. “I’m going to ask you all a question from which I wanted you to stay shushed. Of the many things in this existence, what is considered most perfect?”
  6. “Is it vanilla ice cream?” the girl tried joking as clouds passed overhead.
  7. “Chocolate ice cream?”
  8. “Strawberry ice cream?”
  9. “No….” She rubbed her eyes and let out a broken laugh.
  10. “Forever and ever, God has been the most resounding answer. God bless you, God have mercy, God is great, God save the king. There’s always something better, but there must be a limit to how good something can be. That limit is perfection, an impossible ideal.”
  11. The wind howled and her voice stalled. The children intently watched the girl and she watched each of them with mother’s love.
  12. “Is God recognized as perfect because he is, or because he’s an impossible ideal? Humans threw God over the bus when they decided her was perfect. How should God react when he knows he’ll never be of that standard?”
  13. The girl extended her hand towards the sky with her palm directly underneath the sun, her fingers a silhouette of either a cradle or a cage. The wind abruptly stopped, the colors faded from existence, the sky turned dark and the sun vanished, a white ball of light appearing in her hand.
  14. “With incomparable power, God decided to strive for perfection. Eternities passed and God could not achieve his goal. It was his failure which made him realize what lay beyond his grasp.” The light in her hand filled with swirling wisps of every color. “Human.”
  15. “To be human is impossible,” the ball of light grew intense.
  16. “To live as humans do,” her fingers relaxed.
  17. “To hope as humans do,” the light ascended above us.
  18. “To love as humans do,” her voice impassioned and the light disappearing to bring about a nothingness.
  19. “As God was thrust into the heavens, he reached out for perfection and perfection reached out for him, their fingertips touching to spark their hearts, both of them coming to know the most beautiful darkness.”
  20. A white radiance burst out and blinded us to create a different kind of nothingness. Our visions returned, slowly, and the horizon filled with glimmers of the rainbow. I could make the shapes of everyone on the hill and overhead was the sky with an ancient night above, the stars twinkling. There was darkness, and there was light.
  21. “I want all of you, all my children and family, to know the difficulties when you try to change.”
  22. “This is my story and this is not my story.”
  23. “I hope you’ll forgive me for everything I’ve done and especially for everything I haven’t.”
  24. “I want you to smile because our story is a happy one. I don’t want you to frown, but our story is also a sad one. Don’t look away should the story turn frightening or disgusting, but please remember to shield your eyes if its sweetness overwhelms you.”
  25. Thick tears streamed into the quivering corners of her mouth.
  26. “Above all else,” she whimpered, “I want all of you to know that this is a love story if timeless quality. This is the love story of existence and eternity. This is the love story of both Gods and Humans. This is the greatest love story I can ever tell.”
  27. “Several of you know and several others must have been thinking it, but it doesn’t matter what you believe.”
  28. The girl closed her eyes and took in a breath, time stopping in adoration, and as her eyelids spread, all the stars grew brighter and the horizon seemed to encroach us with all its colors. Her eyes shone out with unreal depth and clarity, not another tear falling in all existence. She spread her lips to talk, but said nothing as she turned to the sky and then to me and then to all her children. Her face was of an innocent doll, no pain in her eyes, no happiness in her expression, but then she truly smiled and stopped all our hearts.
  29. “Many people call me God,” she proclaimed. “And they are not wrong.”
