  1. IUPAG Gaming Nomenclature: A New Naming Convention for Retro-Games & ROM-files.
  2.
  3. Inspired by "A Guide to IUPAC Nomenclature of Organic Compounds",
  4. the goal of IUPAG is to provide an alternative to No-Intro & AllThingsGood
  5. naming convetions (as well as promote other standards,
  6. like good, sane patching practices).
  7.
  8. A couple of problems that I see:
  9.
  10. First, No-Intro does not care about the preservation of hacks & translations.
  11. However, the GoodSets have hacks spread out all over the place.
  12. So, I'm hoping to achieve a good middle ground here.
  13.
  14. Second, younger gamers may not be familiar with some of the franchises that
  15. older gamers grew up with. And it can be daunting to go thru thousands of games
  16. in order to find ONE to play. And if they find one they like, with a GoodSet,
  17. they might miss out on a good hack that provides a fresh, new experience.
  18.
  19. I believe a good naming convention can quickly solve these & other issues,
  20. without the need for a back-end database &/or a front-end app, which may or
  21. may not have the functionality you're looking for (like, for example,
  22. different sorting methods).
  23.
  24. Hence, the birth of IUPAG !!!
  25. IUPAG = International Union of Pure & Applied Gaming.

  31.
  32. As you can see, there are several prominent categories,
  33. which makes it easy to jump to a category you like, or
  34. quickly skip over a section.
  35.
  36. Arabic numerals are used for the original games.
  37. While Roman numerals are used for hacks.
  38.
  39. The Exclamation Point [!] denotes a verified good hack or translation.
  40.
  41. Both (J) & (Japan) denote Japanese games, however,
  42. the (J) abbreviation denotes that a game has very little or no Japanese.
  43. While (Japan) denotes a game with a lot of Japanese.
  44.
  45. This is an unofficial rough draft of the IUPAG naming convention.
  46. But since the specification is not yet official drafted,
  47. we welcome suggestions, criticims, & discussions:

  50.
  51. We will also be developing some good hacking & patching tools.
  52. But until those tools get released, we can help you manually patch hacks &
  53. translations that have either poor or incorrect documentation.
