"Cut!" The Horizon man says, and I sigh as I look into the camera. "You know, I really wish the Marketing folks would give me better lines." I look at the gun and field strip it back into its case. "I have patents pending on this gun. They could have mentioned that.""I'm sorry, Eliza, but the project's been scrapped." My lead strolls in, with a apologetic look on his face. "Paper's been defeated in court. Beta testers field-testing it said it was a bust." I give him a look of tranquil fury. "What?" I take off my goggles as I put on a coat as I walk into the Detroit winter.
"Well, am I fired, then? This was supposed to be my break." I grumble as I run to my cubicle, and  to not much surprise, my entire team is already absent. I see all the work of the past year shoved into a cardboard box. "No." My manager scratches his head. "You're getting a transfer. To sales.""You're shitting me!" I look at my stack of diplomas stacked up like cordwood inside the box as I heft it up. "You know very well, Dave, that when I was hired I was looking for R&D positions. I don't have to take this. I can go to any big company-"
"You know better than that. We have noncompetes with every other triple-A." Mark says, sadly, as he pulls my ID card off my lab coat. "Honestly, you were the only person in my department to get saved. I'm getting transferred out of Detroit." He pulls off his glasses, a hint of exasperation coming off him that makes me pause. "You're not the only one to get fucked by this reorganization. Now are you going to take this out, or do you want it on your SIN that you got fired?"

Hey, look at me, ma!  Whee! I'm a salary girl now. Just like dad. The girls here are nice, too, but they just don't understand anything like my old colleagues did. They stick me with all the technical details because they think it's a punishment, but it's one of the only fucking things I enjoy about my job now. Writing descriptions of tech other people are pioneering. My technical writing has measuredly improved tech support calls by 20%, but my new boss just stares at me and says that IT is a negative transaction on the balance sheet. Ignoramus.
If I have to play grab-ass with one more of these corporate bastards, I think I might bring a gun to work and start shooting people. These marketing fucks have no idea what we're selling. They just go for whatever is popular at the moment and leave for work at 3pm in the afternoon after showing up at noon already drunk. I'm bored as hell and I can't take it anymore.
After barely meeting quota for the fifth time, I make a plan. After everyone leaves Marketing, I go into my boss's office and crack open the vacation schedule. I put myself on indefinite leave, without pay, and shuttle my file into into god knows where in the Ares Database, burying it underneath petabytes of junk. Then I go to my dorm room in Detroit and take out the o'l trusty Ares Phoenix.
I quit.
