  10. ============================================================================
  11.
  12. At this point in time, is there anyone who hasn't heard of Anonymous? Unless you have been living under a rock, pretty much everyone has heard of Anonymous. Whether it be because of their actions against the church of scientology, "OpTitstorm", or the now famous HB Gary leak. There is little doubt that the publicity has reached every corner of this planet.
  13.
  14. From the very early stages of the group, to what is now a global movement, Anonymous has become a force to be reckoned with. Corporations and Government alike are now on the defensive. Attempting to secure or remove any information they would rather the public not be made aware of.
  15.
  16. Lets take a walk back in time and take a look at three of their more well know actions, and their effectiveness. From the loosely formed, ineffective, small group in 2003 to their massive impact on global issues of today.
  17.
  18. One of the first major actions came in the form of operation "chanology" where the group put the Church of Scientology directly in it's cross hairs. Apparently the reason for the attacks were in retaliation for religious groups' attempts to have a leaked video removed from you tube.
  19.
  20. what was Anonymous hoping to achieve? what was the goal of the operation?
  21.
  22. "Our short-term goal is to advocate rescinding the Scientology organization’s tax exempt status, ensuring that the organization remains unable to perpetuate its history of intimidation, disconnection and other illegal or otherwise unethical activities." as stated on the web site dedicated to the specific action Why We Protest
  23.
  24. In February, 2011, What was dubbed Operation Tit storm brought the group down under to Australia. Where the government was attempting to introduce the most strict Internet laws of any country in the world. these restrictions Included bans on web sites relating to drug use, gambling , and many different forms of pornography. While anonymous launched a denial-of-service attack, against a web site for Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd , government agencies were powerless to stop them, even with knowledge of the planned attack a head of time..
  25.
  26. Arguably their most well known action to date, is the successful infiltration of the security firm HB Gary. When Aaron Barr, CEO of HB Gary, claimed he could name members of Anonymous and threatened to release this information not to police, but to a conference in San Francisco. He surely had no idea the hornets nest he had just kicked.
  27.
  28. "HB Gary provides Threat Intelligence from Host to Perimeter. Learn more about how solutions from HB Gary can help protect your business" Or at least that's the message they advertise on their web site. When it came time to protect their own business, however, they fell short of this claim.
  29.
  30. Before they knew it Anonymous had deleted important business information as well as backups copies, posted 68,000 private and company emails, and brought the phone system to its knees. This left HB Gary scrambling to do as much damage control as they could. While speaking to journalist Brian Krebs, Aaron said "They didn't just pick on any company, we try to protect the US Government from hackers. They couldn't have chosen a worse company to pick on."
  31.
  32. As these actions have progressed in both size and effectiveness, it proves that Anonymous is here to stay. Whether these governments and corporations like it or not, they are being forced to be more open and transparent with the public they serve. Will these companies now be more open by choice? Or does this just warn them to be even more secretive in the way they operate? Only time will tell.
