  1. >It's Hearth's Warming Eve and you've spent the day having a lovely time with your friends at you house.
  2. >You barely even remember that Christymaths thing that this holiday reminds you of.
  3. >It's getting late and the others make their exits, happy but tired.
  4. >It's just you and Dash, now, both sat staring into the fire.
  5. >"I had a really nice time today, Dashie." You say, not moving your gaze from the fireplace.
  6. >For a long time she says nothing. She opens her mouth a few times, but evidently decides against whatever she was going to say.
  7. >"I can't do it anymore." She eventually whispers.
  8. >You glance sidelong at her, "Can't do what, Dashie?"
  9. >"This." A little louder now. "I can't just sit here pretending any more."
  10. >She turns to you, her blush evident.
  11. >"I can't just be your friend anymore, Anon."
  12. >You falter on your words and blurt out nonsense, then;
  13. >"You don't want to be my friend anymore?" Dumbfounded.
  14. >"No, I..." She begins.
  15. >"But I thought, but we're... But we're best friends, Anon and Rainbro, right?" You turn to face her, too.
  16. >"That's just it. 'Rainbro', one of the guys, your best pal. It's not enough, Anon."
  17. >"How can that not be..."
  18. >"Because I LOVE YOU, YOU IDIOT!" She cries.
  19. >You stare.
  20. >That's all you can do. You just stare.
  21. >"I love you and I can't keep it to myself any more." Her blush is radiating, you can almost feel it over the now extremely loud fire next to you.
  22. >Or is that the blood in your ears you can hear?
  23. >"All this time." She continues. "All those times when I wanted to say something, and you called me a 'great friend'. It hurt, Anon. Friendship is a wonderful thing, but the word hurts when you say it."
  24. >You still stare.
  25. >"So I can't do it any more. It's too much to ask of me. I know I probably can't have what I want, but I can't go on hurting like this. So..."
  26. >"So we're not friends any more." You finally break your silence, but it's not a question.
  27. >"I'm going now, Anon. This might be the last time we ever talk." Her tears are falling freely now, but as you go to wipe them away she recoils.
  28. >"No. Just... Goodnight, Anon." She gets up and heads for the door, and out into the night.
  29. >'What the fuck am I feeling?' You think.
  30. >'All those times... urgh... I must have seemed like such a dick. How could I not notice?'
  31. >'Could I love a pony?'
  32. >You immediately berate yourself. 'No, stop using the designation 'pony'. It's a cop-out so you don't have to make a decision.
  33. >'This is Rainbow Dash. Your friend. She's had your back since day 1.'
  34. >'Even through all that odd, rapey estrus stuff a while back.'
  35. >'You use 'pony' so you can fall back on your built in interspecies aversion, when you should be thinking 'Dashie'.
  36. >You sit for a little while to digest this.
  37. >'Could I love Rainbow Dash?'
  38. >'Can I love Rainbro?'
  39. >A huge grin spreads over your face and you leap to your feet.
  40. >Stomping your feet into opposite shoes in your haste you throw open the front door, catching yourself from falling on the doorframe.
  41. >In the distance a cyan dot is slowly receding, but you can see she has her head hung low.
  42. >"Rainbow Dash!" You call.
  43. >She doesn't stop.
  44. >"RAINBOW DASH!!!" Your lungs hurt, but the dot stops getting smaller.
  45. >You see her look back towards you.
  46. >"WAIT UP!"
  47. >You sprint out into the snow, forgetting the cold, forgetting your door, forgetting everything except the one phrase burning in your mind.
  48. >'I love Dashie.'
