  1. Life in the Kingdom is much the same as life everywhere. Men and women live and love, work and play, raise children and families and eventually grow old and die. And for most, that is the end of things. But not all.
  2.
  3. Some – perhaps one in five - of those who would pass from the world don’t, rising instead as the living dead. Some, especially those who died with rage or fear in their hearts, rise as the maddened dead and strike out in their confusion against those around them. Some rise simply confused, placid and empty inside, having lost the vital spark that makes them men and women with their passing. Many lie somewhere along this continuum, all losing more or less of themselves with their death. If the undead are put down, they simple rise again, often losing more and more of their vital spark but unable to pass fully out of the world.
  4.
  5. And for a few rare souls, their passage through the valley of death leaves them whole. Their death doesn’t remove their vital spark, their determination to live. These are the sainted dead, those granted the ability to die without losing themselves, to return time and time again despite the hardships placed upon them.
  6.
  7. And you are one of them.
  8.
  9. Your rise from the dead and your undying determination mark you as one of the chosen, lucky few, but still subject to the laws of the Kingdom. By the decree of the old Empress, no dead can remain in the Capitol. Officially, the dead who retain their sanity are full citizens of the Empire that simply choose to serve the empire as members of the Legion of the Dead. Unofficially, you were told that you were volunteering.
  10.
  11. The Kingdom praises you for your patriotism and sense of duty! Welcome to the Legion.
  12.
  13. Character creation:
  14.
  15. 1) Your death was recent – either tragic or expected, an accident or illness or simply the end of a life come at last. What kind of person were you before you died, and how did you die? What kind of skills do you have, and what do you do in a fight?
  16. 2) Follow the character creation guide on page 16. Use one of the preexisting backgrounds, or make a new one; I’ll be around to help people come up with ideas or customize existing ones! Origin, too; if you want to play a non-human go for it, but by default I’m figuring we’ll have mostly humans. We’re not using Kits.
  17. 3) Pick a class and a role from the tactical combat character creation section on page 98; feel free to reskin anything into something you think would be fun. There are quite a few options but in general they all work well, and work well together; take a read through and see what catches your eye, and if you’ve got a concept but want to know what would work well with it just ask!
