  2.
  3. Up on the balcony of the Golden Palm hotel, Judy could see the entirety of Zootopia laid out before her, as far as the little signs that greeted incoming motorists and marked the boundaries of the city and as close as the little loop of road in front of the foyer, where limo after limo lazily drifted through and offloaded their VIPs before drifting silently and anonymously off into the night.
  4. She sighed a little, her mind heavy with the scale of the task laid out before her, but the moment she thought about turning round and heading down in the elevator and out the building, her own pride got in the way and blotted it out.
  5. “It's alright, it's going to be okay. Don't panic Judy; you've got this” she whispered to herself as she took a slow, deliberate sip of her drink.
  6. Again, the idea of leaving crossed her mind, but this time it was shut out by another voice – one that wasn't internal, and with a little start, she prodded at the little speaker hidden inside her left ear.
  7. “Rules one, two and three of social stealth, Carrots: one – never stand near any environmental hazards, like a hundred-story drop, for instance. Two – stay in the social zone, you'll pick up more that way, and three – stop touching your ear, you look super suspicious like that.”
  8. She rolled her eyes as she let go of the earpiece, finding that she could hear Nick just fine anyhow – doubly so, now that he'd sauntered over to her, all dressed up in his dark tux.
  9. He gave her a quick, smug little look as he bent down to her level, “and finally, I suppose it's an unwritten rule, but long dresses aren't a good idea. I mean, it's not like you don't look great in that or anything, but if things get ugly you want to be able to move as easily as possible. So maybe hitch that dress up a little or make a couple of alterations if you can.”
  10. She suddenly felt stupid and Nick's smug face wasn't helping, but gently, Nick laid his paw on her shoulder to reassure her “it's alright, Carrots – I made the same mistakes when I was a rookie too, just make sure you don't keep making the same mistakes and you'll do just fine.”
  11. She smiled at him and took another sip of her drink “Thanks. How's it looking in there, by the way? Any developments?”
  12. Nick shook his head and looked wistfully out at the city like she had just been doing, while Judy turned round, so that nobody could come up behind them and try to shove them off the balcony “Not good. I've been looking round for any kind of clandestine meetups or anybody on the list, but wherever they're meeting, they've hidden it pretty good. Not so much as a scent.”
  13. Judy looked down a little, feeling his disappointment.
  14. “It's like they were just never here in the first pla...”
  15. Judy looked up for a moment to see his ears prick up slowly and his mouth twitch just a little, “say now… that's not all that bad an idea” he muttered to himself.
  16. With a quick little turn and a flowing gesture that finished in an extended hand to her, Nick walked back into the party with Judy in tow, his confidence restored.
  17.
  18. The party continued for an hour or so, with the occasional tune by the house band that roused him to dancing, breaking up the monotony of the hundreds of revellers he had no interest in and the messages of goodwill from a cause he wasn't allowed to have sympathy for, lest his attention wander and jeopardise the mission.
  19. Sure, housing orphans was all well and good, but right now he was dealing with an issue far more immediate than that of the city's unlucky children and their living conditions.
  20. Hopps' voice came through his earpiece, clear and distinct as he positioned himself on the upper level of the ballroom “number 86 again. Heading down now”
  21. He took a mental note as she reported it – in the last hour, the elevator had stopped at floor 86 about fifteen times.
  22. “Thanks, Carrots. I reckon it's about time to make ourselves scarce.”
  23. He knocked back his drink and nodded to her across the room, where she responded with a subtle flick of her ears.
  24. He watched her head towards the balcony again and checked to see if she'd picked up any unfriendly followers, but after a little time he failed to see anybody and so began slinking his way down to the main ballroom, making sure he moved as quickly as he could without drawing any attention.
  25. Making one last look round the room, he followed Judy out to the balcony and shut the door behind him.
  26. “You done this before?” he asked as he fished around in his waistcoat and pulled out a curious looking little gadget.
  27. Judy shook her head as she drew the same piece of equipment from a concealed compartment in her dress and copied Nick in setting it up, pressing the green button to release the little arms at the end of it.
  28. Nick smirked a little, seeing her suddenly look worried as she fully realised just what she was about to do, “If you're wondering, Carrots, the answer is no. No it doesn't get easier the more you do it, and I've been doing this way longer than you.”
  29. She watched Nick pull the small, user-end cord from the bottom of the grappling hook and unzip a hidden opening in the back of his tuxedo. With a deft motion, he pulled a strong-looking hook out of it and passed the cord through, where some kind of mechanism snatched it up and quickly receded into his tuxedo.
  30. With some difficulty, she copied the process, exclaiming a little when the same mechanism in her dress took the cable up with more force than she expected.
  31. Once she was satisfied that the harness that was built into her dress had fully engaged, she nodded to Nick, who took her grappling hook and set it up on the safety railing for her.
  32. “I'll go first” Nick said, before taking a deep breath, “the trick is not to think too much about it. Oh, and don't scream. You don't want people to hear you screaming as you go down the side of a building, it's just a bit embarrassing.”
  33. She smiled a little at that as Nick backed up a few paces, closed his eyes and crouched down, flicking his ears back.
  34. He stopped there for a few seconds, breathing slowly, then he opened his eyes again and ran towards the end of the balcony at full speed, not even flinching as he ducked down and jumped with as much force as he could muster.
  35.
  36. In an instant, Nick launched himself into the air, feeling the ground fall away below him as he leaned forward and spread his arms and legs out to slow his descent as much as possible.
  37. He looked up for a moment to watch Judy gasp, but he quickly turned his attention to the fall, and the rapidly oncoming ground.
  38. As he went down, he felt the force of the wind getting stronger until his tail and fur began to feel as if they were dragging him back, until after falling for about fifteen floors, he felt the grappling hook's mechanism begin to work, stopping him gradually enough to not cause any injury and bringing him level with floor 89.
  39. He hung there for a little while as Judy prepared herself and jumped.
  40. As she descended, he watched her struggling not to scream; it was amusing, watching her screwing her face up and flailing her arms to stop herself screaming, until she finally came to a rest about a metre or so below him.
  41. “Nice work Carrots” he said to her, a genuine note of pride seeping into his voice as he watched her swinging gently and taking deep breaths to calm herself, “alright, we're going to have to go down a few floors. Follow my lead and keep your cool.”
  42. He touched a button on his shirt and with a little mechanical whirr, he began descending at a steady rate, followed by Judy.
  43. They descended quickly and silently, watching the windows closely to make sure nobody saw them, until they reached floor 86 and on Nick's instruction, began swinging back and forth.
  44. With a little flurry of arm movements, Nick managed to grab the side of the window and dug his claws in as hard as possible to stop himself from swinging back before deploying a little suction cup to better hold himself in place in spite of the cord's best efforts to drag him back.
  45. He motioned to Judy to stop swinging as he reached into his jacket to fetch his phone, which he unlocked with a deft little swipe and with a couple of taps, opened a rather innocuous looking camera app.
  46. He looked behind him to see Judy obediently hanging in mid-air, desperately trying to look like she wasn't terrified, but her ears betrayed her feelings, being slicked back just about as hard as bunny ears can go.
  47. Nick chuckled a little as he pressed his phone against the glass and made a slight shrugging motion "best cover your ears Carrots, this thing gets pretty loud."
  48. Dutifully, Judy covered her ears as Nick pressed his phone against the glass and tapped a little icon, causing the screen to go red before emitting an ear-splitting artificial shriek that, after a couple of seconds, shattered the glass into tiny little fragments that plunged down to the street below.
  49. Swinging back with a stifled yelp, Nick hurriedly put his phone back into the pocket he'd got it from as he reached the end of his swing's arc.
  50. "With me" he said as he began swinging back towards the now wide open hotel room, swishing his tail around as he went in a vain attempt to gather more speed.
  51. On his first swing he didn't come much closer than he had before, but by the third swing he found himself swinging into the room himself, where he disengaged the grapple with a thump of a button on his waistcoat and sailed through the air for a moment before landing awkwardly on the bed.
  52. Moments later, Judy landed on top of him and flailed ineffectually until she realised she was safe and finally stopped.
  53. For a few seconds they lay there in a sprawled mess before Nick spoke
  54. "let's never speak of this moment again"
  55. "Agreed"
  56.
  57. Once they regained their composure, Nick and Judy slowly opened the door and looked round.
  58. Judy's ears pricked up quickly the moment the door opened, hitting Nick in the face as they rushed to their astute position, "there's a lot of hushed voices down that way" she whispered.
