I think people just don't get speedrunning.

I think people expect us to be "content creators" because we are creating content, or because the occasional speedrunner-of-old created content (like when Narcissa used to make commentated videos or dansalvato put a lot of love and care into his All Melons submission vids). I made my stream layout look nice because I like to have a nice thing to look at that I can take pride in, but if you think that makes me a Content Creator™, then you are largely missing the point. I don't produce "content". I produce speedruns.

I turn on my stream for one reason: I go fast in video games, and twitch makes it easy to record and share that. End. Of. Fucking. Story. This comes with one notable downside: speedrunners aren't putting out positive content. Sure, some of us occasionally produce tutorials or explanation vids (you want a great example of this type of content? Bramz made a tutorial series for literally every fucking exit in SMW [1], and Dotsarecool has been making an amazing series of videos explaining not just the most obscure tricks in a handful of games, but breaking down how to learn to do exactly what he does [2]).

This leaves the door open for negative content. Apollo Legend wannabes that I still choose to not reference by name take issue with the speedrunning community. "Wah wah wah, I tried to speedrun, it was too hard, people didn't spoonfeed me, you don't make good content, it's boring, people are trying to silence me, and because of that I hate you." [3] But these people come and go, and the less attention people give them, the better. They eventually realize that without provocation, there is only so much b-roll of awkward teenagers they can show before the content dries up.

Here is what I want to add to this, however: don't add to the hate. Are you upset that someone is criticizing something you care about? Neat. What should you do. Speedrun. Go do a speedrun. Go fast in your game and make a speedrun and upload it to youtube or stream it on twitch and channel all of that frustration into positive energy. You love speedrunning so much? It doesn't need defending. Just speedrun.

But don't add to the hate. Don't feel the need to jump in and be the hero. But even more so, don't tear down each other. Just support what you see as good, and ignore the stuff you see as bad. Don't feel the need to talk shit about other communities constantly (to quote benstephens in his own vod "don't get me started on the ALTTP community" hurr durr). Just play your game fast. Stop not going fast. Go faster always. When given the choice whether to go fast or go faster, honestly, I'd pick "faster" every single time.

Oh, I got WR in Bubsy 3D as well. That's pretty cool.
