  1. Jun 05 15:26:01 <Impy> Bob was looking for Callum. His phone was messed up- namely the screen so he was trying to use it but... it really wasn't working. HE frowned and popped into the cafeteria, looking for the guy- he needed a hand with something in his room and he heard Callum was handy. This was a job for big guys.
  2. Jun 05 15:28:44 <Knave> Bob had the fortune of never having to wonder which huge dude he was looking at, because he was one of the two options. For instance, when he sees Callum sat at a cafeteria table drinking from a comically small carton of milk through a straw, he doesn't have to go through that moment of "Is that huge dude over there Bob or Callum?" Because Bob is Bob. He's not that hard to find is what I'm getting at.
  3. Jun 05 15:30:21 <Impy> Bob spots him and symnpathizes with the tiny milks problem. He approaches with a friendly smile, "C-Callum?" he asked, smiling "I'm... um... not interrupting?" he said hopefully- botching the polite greeting with ommissions.
  4. Jun 05 15:32:34 <Knave> "Hrm?" Callum looks up - way up - and then pulls his mouth off the straw, "No, not at all. It's Bob, right?" He smiles warmly and extends a hand in greeting.
  5. Jun 05 15:37:50 <Impy> Bob smiled and nodded, shaking his hand with less care than he normally would. Callum was strong, and Bob knew that. He sat down once the greeting was over. "H-How are you?" he asked, feeling weird just getting straight to business. He wanted to be friends with people, not use them- also he was awkward.
  6. Jun 05 15:41:26 <Knave> Callum sips from his straw thoughtfully, then says, "Could be worse." with an even tone and a little shrug of his shoulders. "What about you? Don't think I've seen you since the dance. Recovered from Cass yet?" A small, wry smile as he takes another sip. Callum was picking up bad habits.
  7. Jun 05 15:42:44 <Impy> Bob immediately got uncomfortable at that question. "I thought... that was really mean of.... of her to do" not to mention he'd ended up drunk and asleep in the snow- the whole evening had been slightly traumatizing. "I... probably won't go to any more dances" he said sadly. "I don't want a... repeat" he shrugged.
  8. Jun 05 15:44:14 <Knave> "Don't worry," Callum looks at Bob softly. He should leave this stuff to Cass - he didn't have the heart for it, "That was Cass being Cass, not the dance. I'll make sure they don't pick on you any more, okay?"
  9. Jun 05 15:46:04 <Impy> "It was still really... I don't really talk about that stuff" he'd been so flustered he hadn't known what to do. "But.... uh.... thank you" he said. "I'd.... If it didn't happen again... I could... could live with that" he gave Callum a little smile.
  10. Jun 05 15:48:15 <Knave> Callum took another long sip of his milk. Cripes, Bob was like a funhouse mirror - twice as innocent and half as good with words. It was hard not to take pity. "Don't mention it. Was there anything particular you wanted to talk about, or did you just come to say hi?"
  11. Jun 05 15:50:53 <Impy> "Um... Partially to say hi but.... I need help moving something in my room" he said. It wasn't that the item was too heavy- it was just awkward and it was flush with three walls- making it hard to do anything with. "I think I broke my bed" he said, frowning. IT was a custom made thing he'd done all by himself when they moved here. It was nice but he wasn't a professional- he didn't really know how to build things.
  12. Jun 05 15:52:50 <Knave> "Huh." Callum finishes the milk and absently crushes the carton flat in one hand, "Well moving stuff and fixing stuff is my ballpark. What exactly is it you need moved?"
  13. Jun 05 15:56:48 <Impy> "My bed. It's.... I made it myself and I think I broke it last night" he said "But I can't move it because... I kind of built it completely flush with the wall" he said. He had actually built it in place to give himself the biggest possible bed. "It's just... really awkward" If it was just weight, well, he could have lifted the whole thing over his head. "It's mostly wood" he said- in case Callum didn't know woodworking.
  14. Jun 05 16:00:27 <Knave> Callum lets the broken bed thing go, but makes a note to tell Cass about it later. Right now, he just smiles and repeats his ad from the school website, "Carpentry a specialty." He points with his thumb to the exit, "Want me to come take a look at it right now? I can grab my tools on the way and we'll see what I can do."
  15. Jun 05 16:01:44 <Impy> "If you're done eating. I mean. I don't need it... right now" He had all day. He had money too. "So... On your time" he said agreeably.
  16. Jun 05 16:03:22 <Knave> "Free as a bird." Callum assures him, standing up and grabbing his litter to dispose of like the conscientious citizen he is, "Couldn't let you sleep in a broken bed tonight, could I?"
  17. Jun 05 16:04:19 <Impy> Bob smiled "Thank you. Um... Try... Try not to laugh when you see my.... handiwork" he had gone off information derived from a few youtube videos about a guy who had made a bed for his kids- then he'd scaled it up. Bob was trying to be humorous, though.
  18. Jun 05 16:06:02 <Knave> "I'll try not to." Callum chuckles, leading the way out of the cafeteria, "How exactly did you break it, if you don't mind my asking?"
  19. Jun 05 16:08:37 <Impy> Bob lead him out. "Um... I just sat down." he said. Weight, plus speed. He had sat on a board that was otherwise unsupported and it's snapped easily under him. He was embarrassed about it but he didn't know how to make it sturdier "It's near the center, I think I was too far back?" he suggested. "I'm just too big-" Callum probably understood a little "Are.... you still growing?" he asked. Bob was, and predictions ranged from
  20. Jun 05 16:08:37 <Impy> ten to eleven feet for his full grown height. He wasn't sure how he would manage that.
  21. Jun 05 16:10:19 <Knave> Callum shrugs, "Don't think so. I'll see what I can do to get your bed fixed up, but you might need something a little stronger in the long run." He grunts, "I'd say talk to the staff, but they'd only tell you to pay for a bigger room and make your own dang bed."
  22. Jun 05 16:16:52 <Impy> "I got the bigger room. It's actually.... really nice" he said. Callum would like this. Bob had bought the apartment suite upgrade and they'd decided that eleven foot ceilings were a health-necessity since he was as tall as a normal ceiling in his dress shoes. "What would you recommend? To... to make it from?" he asked. They were picking up Callum's tools first.
  23. Jun 05 16:22:51 <Knave> "Well, with some good solid steel you're a lot less likely to see it break, but then if it buckles there's not much of a quick fix. Stone's probably not your best bet either from a comfort perspective. Two shakes." He says, as they arrive at his room and he ducks inside, emerging moments later strapping on a toolbelt, "Honestly you probably ought to talk with someone smarter than me. Maybe they can figure out
  24. Jun 05 16:22:51 <Knave> some kind of hammock contraption or something." He shrugs, "Which way to your room?"
  25. Jun 05 16:25:24 <Impy> Bob waited and when he asked- pointed "Yeah. I want a normal bed- This way." he said, leading the way as he spoke. "Something.... Just.... Normal" he said. Just bigger and stronger. "Steel might work. I... I can probably... figure something out." he said. "But for now... I'll be more careful if we get it fixed" he said. He had also made his own large couch and tables- It had been a lot of work but it was nice to fit in
  26. Jun 05 16:25:24 <Impy> somewhere. Maybe Callum would like it too?
  27. Jun 05 16:31:05 <Knave> Upon entering Bob's room, Callum smiles and nods, "Nice place you got. It's like being normal sized." Callum appraised the Bob-sized furniture again, "Heck, it's like being kinda small." He crossed over to the bed and started eyeing the damage, "So if you want a normal, sturdy bed, what you probably want to have is basically a support down the middle, see." He looks at Bob to see if he's following, but continues anyway, "See at the edge of the bed, the rails take the weight, but when there's weight in the centre it's all on the middle of the slats. So basically if you had a middle set of legs with a third rail to support the slats in the middle, it'd be a lot less likely to break." He flashes a smile at Bob, "See what I mean?"
  28. Jun 05 16:42:38 <Impy> Bob Smiled at the comment. He had a small living room and kitchen in addition to his bedroom and extra tall roof. "Thanks" He said. The bed supports were visible because he'd already removed the huge mattress and rolled it up in his closet. "Ok... Ok. That... amkes a little sense." he said. "We need to pull it out to try to fix it?" he asked. The slats were close together and the cracked one went all the way acorss. "Or.... Or do I need to start again?" he asked.
  29. Jun 05 16:48:40 <Knave> Callum takes a step back and rubs his chin, "Well, I think for now the best I can do is try to patch up the broken slat as best I can. But we can definitely add a third rail to this without starting fresh. Just need the materials for it. Might have to pull it out when we do that, but we'll see how it goes." He claps a hand on Bob's shoulder, "And if you're willing to lend a hand, I'll charge you half price."
  30. Jun 05 16:50:45 <Impy> Bob nodded "Oh yeah. I can help. I always thought I would. I have spare boards in the closet" he said. He wasn't one to throw ANYTHING away at all. "Thank you very much for this. I was all worried about what I was going to do" he shifted, waiting for orders, more or less.
  31. Jun 05 16:53:26 <Knave> "Oh, well," Callum says, stepping over to the bed and pulling a tape measure off his belt, "If you've got the wood, we can get started now, long as you don't mind a little sawdust. If you could bring it out I'll see how much I have to work with."
  32. Jun 05 16:57:01 <Impy> Bob nodded, gathering the wood. There were four good long pieces and a ton of small pieces. He laid them out along with his small amount of tools. a small handsaw, hammer, nails- the basis of what he'd used to make his furniture. He was out of wood glue.
  33. Jun 05 17:01:08 <Knave> Callum looks over the assembled gear and then nods, "I can work with this." He starts by removing the cracked slat, "Might not look pretty when I'm done, but I can promise it'll be sturdy." He measures the height of the legs, then the length of the existing rails, and sets Bob to work cutting a new pair of legs to length.
  34. Jun 05 17:03:45 <Impy> Bob got to work, measuring carefully and starting to saw the boards. "It's fine. There will be a mattress on it" he said "I am just... jsut glad someone here knows how to fix it. I was at a loss." he said. "How... How did you learn all this?"
  35. Jun 05 17:10:51 <Knave> "Grew up on a farm." Callum smiles, "My pa always says, you can't run a furniture store in a farming town, but you can make a killing selling lumber." Callum is busying himself measuring and inspecting various parts of the bottom of the bed, figuring out the best way to join the new support.
  36. Jun 05 17:13:58 <Impy> Bob nodded. "Oh... I don't know anything about that. So... you sold lumber?" he asked. "Was it a tree farm?" he knew literally nothing about farms or trees and the question was entirely earnest.
  37. Jun 05 17:15:41 <Knave> "No, we sold corn and eggs, mostly." Callum says with a patient smile, "But that's what farming families are like - too proud of a job well done to just buy anything they could make. Well," Callum tilts his head while remembering his mother, "That's what farming men are like, anyway."
  38. Jun 05 17:23:06 <Impy> Bob thought about that "IT sounds really nice" he said. "Like a good place to grow up" he finished cutting the wood as directed.
  39. Jun 05 17:27:53 <Knave> "Yeah." Callum says, nodding slightly. "I'll need you to hold some stuff steady while I nail it together, okay?" He said, lining up one of the legs with the length that would be the new rail.
  40. Jun 05 17:29:08 <Impy> Bob nodded and got into place, ready to hold- he was good at things like that. Actually knowing the wood and how to do stuff with it, he was a novice.
  41. Jun 05 17:32:11 <Knave> While Callum goes about hammering one leg into place and then the other, he makes conversation idly, "So, seemed like you were pretty popular at the dance. Don't suppose you got yourself a special someone?"
  42. Jun 05 17:34:23 <Impy> Bob paused then frowned. Not one to keep secrets he said. "Um... I thought Elissia was.... interested but she wasn't. I was wrong." he said. Even as he said it, he felt it'd get back to Cass and become something to torment him with. But he didn't have a natural inclination to hide himself.
  43. Jun 05 17:37:43 <Knave> Callum shrugs between hammer-taps. "That's the way it goes sometimes." He inspects the assembled piece with a critical eye, and gives a little smile to Bob, apparently unable to stop being people's big brother, "Anyone else you've got your eye on?"
  44. Jun 05 17:50:20 <Impy> Bob shook his head "I... i was dating a girl but she left for mission trips. So... I... I mean. I don't... look specifically but... I do like.... um... I like the idea of being in love" he said.
  45. Jun 05 17:52:33 <Knave> "All the more reason to get your bed fixed." Callum smiled to himself, then quickly moved on to, "I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding someone soon enough. Now, we are gonna need to pull the bed out so I can fix this in place."
  46. Jun 05 17:53:25 <Impy> "What does that have to do with finding a girlfriend?" he asked even as he stood up to help move the bed. "Just tell me how to help" he said. It was too big for either of them to move alone- so teamwork was the name of the game.
  47. Jun 05 17:55:23 <Knave> Well, maybe too big to move /delicately/, but Callum wasn't one to let pride get in the way. "Okay, you stand over that side and take as much of the weight as you can, I'll start pulling it away and you tell me when there's enough room to start turning it around."
  48. Jun 05 17:58:31 <Impy> Bob nodded. The problem of moving it was more that- if it was moved from just one end, the weight of the other end might break it. "Ok." he said. He could easily support the weihgt as they moved it. "How much... around do you need? Just... upside down?" he asked.
  49. Jun 05 18:00:19 <Knave> Callum pauses for a second. "Y'know I was gonna have you lift the end and then get under it, but that's way smarter. Upside down it is." Callum sidled to the other end to help flip it over.
  50. Jun 05 18:05:48 <Impy> Bob nodded. "Ok. Either works." He had figured upside down because then it'd be stable to work on- he just didn't want to risk it. He helped control it as they flipped it over. It was flat on the floor in no time. "Thank you very, very much. I never would have considered.... any of that" he said.
  51. Jun 05 18:07:55 <Knave> "Beautiful." Callum smiles, then carefully finds the centre of both ends with his tape measure and makes little pencil marks before he gets to work nailing the support in place, "After this, just got to measure up a fresh slat, and we'll be done. Quick as you like."
  52. Jun 05 18:10:56 <Impy> Bob smiled "Good." He wasn't sure when he was supposed to ask about the charges- he found money awkward, as he had rarely ever had any in the past. It was something to learn. "So um... How.... much will this cost me?" he asked.
  53. Jun 05 18:12:27 <Knave> Callum gives an amiable shrug as he stands up, "Barely took an hour, and you helped me with it, so how does five bucks sound?"
  54. Jun 05 18:14:23 <Impy> "That's not enough" he said. "I mean... People used to give me five bucks just for looking sad" he said. Not often but it had happened. Being homeless was like that at times. He was apparently bad at haggling too.
  55. Jun 05 18:17:32 <Knave> "All right, call it the full ten if you insist." Callum says, grabbing one side of the bed to begin flipping back right side up, "Or hey, how about fifteen and I'll repair it for free if it breaks again?"
  56. Jun 05 18:19:03 <Impy> Bob thought about that "That sounds fair" he said, helping flip it over. He wanted to be fair- having money was really nice, he learned, and he didn't want to rip anyone off. After it was in place he went to look for his wallet. He found a ten and a five and handed them over "I'll try not to break it though. I... Just sort of wasn't paying attention last time" He really couldn't relax about that kind of thing.
  57. Jun 05 18:22:08 <Knave> Callum sticks the bills into the back pocket of his jeans, "Thank you kindly." Then he measures out the length for a slat and marks a fresh board for cutting, "Bed's a bed. Don't want you thinking you can't flop down at the end of the day." Callum patted the new slat experimentally along its length, "Seems firm enough."
  58. Jun 05 18:28:29 <Impy> "That's good. It's not so bad being able to... um... Flop... I just have to be careful" he said. "But the sturdier the better" he went to his closet to retrive his foam mattress. he had rolled it up and tied paracord around it to keep it as small as possible. IT was trying to escape. He leaned it against the wall so he could put it down once they got the bed flipped over again
  59. Jun 05 18:31:41 <Knave> Callum helps Bob turn the bed back over and slides the new slat into place, and bites his tongue to keep any of the jokes he might have made out of Bob's statements inside.
  60. Jun 05 18:35:45 <Impy> And Bob doesn't know it,but he appreciates the discretion. Poor Bob hadn't had the talk yet- no one seemed to think the huge 15 year old needed it. He really was quite clueless as to any jokes about beds or baseball bats. Poor guy. "That looks good" he said. "You could make a profession out of that. A lot... um... a lot of people here have... um... special requirements for stuff like furniture..." he suggested.
  61. Jun 05 18:38:08 <Knave> "Not a bad idea." Callum smiles, "Might put that in the ad." He slips his hammer back into his toolbelt, "Anything else you needed, or shall I leave you to it?"
  62. Jun 05 18:39:07 <Impy> "No. It's fine. I... Just need to um... get the mattress in place and make the bed" he smiled "Thank you. I couldn't have done any of that without you" He wouln't have even considered it
  63. Jun 05 18:41:07 <Knave> "You're welcome." Callum says with a pleasant smile, "If you need anything else, just let me know. See you around, Bob."
  64. Jun 05 18:42:04 <Impy> "Thank you!" he said, walking the other tall boy out, though Bob still had a few heads on him. "And... um... feel free to come by any time" he said.
  65. Jun 05 18:42:56 <Knave> "Sure thing." Callum pats Bob's arm, then steps out the door with a wave, "Have a nice day."
  66. Jun 05 18:57:06 <Impy> Bob waved him out and smiled, going to check out his bed. CAllum was the best handyman ever.
