  1. <camerongray> Unless I was one of *those* people, who throws XP on it, fills it with junk software and advertises it as a "Ready to use internet PC"
  2. <mopar> cool
  3. <mopar> camerongray: i am not one of those people.
  4. -*- Call-A-Farmer is off, later then normal for me tonight
  5. <mopar> all i do is load the latest windows os it will support, max the ram and hdd, sometimes upgrade the cpu, and load missing drivers.
  6. <camerongray> Falls in the same category as people buying old HP workstations, Using the faulty logic of Dual 2.5GHz Xeon = 5GHz, throw in a super low end NVIDIA card, installs a pirated OS, then sell it as "5GHz, Dual Core, Gaming PC with Windows 7 Ultimate"
  7. <camerongray> I load the *licenced* OS :P
  8. <mopar> also load java, .net, flash and reader. that's it.
  9. <mopar> my xp is a valid vlk edition. home and pro.
  10. <mopar> with matched key.
  11. <Call-A-Farmer> although it is probably because I went for a snooze at 7:30 last night! left my light on and woke up again thinking it would be only about 9pm, looked at my phone and it was 12:45 :o I wasent even tired!
  12. <mopar> and i don't fill it with <censored>. i leave it to the buyer tyo do that. eeewww
  13. <funkychicken> mopar how do you get all that one a 500 k drive

  15. <mopar> the p3 m700 i sold had a 30gb hdd
  16. <camerongray> mopar: But then you are one of *those* people - VLK = Pirated :P
  17. <mopar> bullsht
  18. <-- kongolav ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
  19. <camerongray> How?
  20. --> guest_28 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
  21. <camerongray> VLK is for volume licenced customers, a consumer does not have an MS volume licencing agreement
  22. <mopar> on loan from licensed owner, a legitimate computer repair / rebuilder.
  23. <-- guest_28 ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
  24. <mopar> i repair service and refurb computers for him
  25. <funkychicken> I remember when i was at work and they came in with a brand new 1 gig drive only 500 bucks I thought they would never fill it up LOL
  26. <mopar> lol
  27. <funkychicken> back in 95
  28. <funkychicken> seems like yesterday
  29. <camerongray> mopar: What's 'on loan'?
  30. <mopar> yeah. i remember using an apple IIe in school pc lab.
  31. <Call-A-Farmer> cyaz!
  32. <camerongray> You can't sell machines using a volume licence! No way!
  33. <funkychicken> I had a 286
  34. <mopar> sometimes, as pay for work i do for him, he will give me a fixable computer and let me put xp on it with his disk.
  35. <funkychicken> window 2.?
  36. <funkychicken> i think
  37. <mopar> idk for sure.
  38. <camerongray> mopar: But even a volume licence customer can't sell machines running their volume licence!
  39. <camerongray> Volume Licencing is for a big company to licence all their machined under one agreement, not sell them!
  40. <funkychicken> cameron yes they can but it's not legal
  41. -*- Call-A-Farmer cannot understand you lot!
  42. <camerongray> Call-A-Farmer: But do you agree to the licence agreement? :P
  43. -*- Call-A-Farmer leaves without anyone noticing :s
  44. <camerongray> AHh yeah, sure they can, they use VLKs as they don't need activated uner XP, but certianly illegal
  45. <Call-A-Farmer> camerongray: :o
  46. <camerongray> The machines I refurb on the other hand... My process:
  47. <mopar> i think i've sold or given away 25 or 30 computers with xp pro in the last 4 years.
  48. <camerongray> Still not licenced correctly!
  49. <mopar> seems to me, if you refurb a comp, you can use the vlk edition of xp or whatever, unless it has a good coa on the bottom or side. then use that and validate over the phone.
  50. <funkychicken> i bought a copy of win7 on ebay from a 5 star and got burned GRRRR stupid ebay wouldn't help at all
  51. <camerongray> mopar: Not at all, that is not what Volume Licencing is for at all!
  52. <camerongray> I fix them doing whatever is needed, install the licenced OS (Usually Vista) with the COA key, Enter Windows 'Audit Mode', Install all drivers from the manufacturer, Activate Windows either online or by phone, Install all Windows updates, then finally run Sysprep to put the machine back to the "out of box" environment
  53. <camerongray> So when the user boots it, they are taken through the original Windows "Mini Setup" to add their user account.etc and they log in to a completely clean OS
  54. <mopar> eewwww vista. i refuse to have anything to do with that, unless it's to wipe that trash.
  55. <-- Call-A-Farmer ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
  56. <mopar> funkychicken: why not?
  57. <camerongray> I'd rather sell a machine with Vista rather than a pirated OS!
  58. <camerongray> I know Wikipedia isn't the best source, but: "If a volume license key becomes known and used outside of the organization to which it is licensed, then this is regarded as software piracy"
  59. <funkychicken> they said it's past 3 months and too bad so sad
  60. <mopar> oh
  61. <funkychicken> I tried to get more info on the seller but they wouldn't even give me that
  62. <camerongray> Yeah, Volume licencing is for a single company to licence their OS - For example, my university is a Volume Licence customer for Office 2010 and Windows 7 Enterprise on all their machines
  63. <funkychicken> they gave me dick all and it cost me 250
  64. <funkychicken> chick all LOL
  65. <mopar> if your comp had a valid win7 coa on it...bottom or side...you could have used a generic copy from a compshop for $5
  66. <funkychicken> me mopar?
  67. <mopar> well, the man i work for has been fixing computers since the late '80s'. so i guess he got it legally somehow.
  68. <funkychicken> windows just sent me a notice saying my copy wasn't legit and I have to buy another one. Grrrr
  69. <mopar> funkychicken: yup
  70. <camerongray> mopar: How do you know he got it legally? In literally 10 seconds online I could find you a volume licence key!
  71. <camerongray> And it would work fine
  72. <camerongray> But not legal
  73. <camerongray> The only way he can get one is for a large enterprise and that cannot be used for machines outwith that company
  74. --> mimorek ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
  75. <mopar> funkychicken: could you report it to microsoft as a victim of piracy and get some kind of remediation?
  76. <funkychicken> I'm now running a new copy of windows7 pro from a friend and I got the none legit. but i have a copy of legit vista and said I want to upgrade to win 8 then they let me use the win7 pro LOL
  77. <camerongray> mopar: There we go, 10 seconds and found a list of 136 volume licence keys, I wonder where your one came from :P
  78. <funkychicken> mopar no i even sent it back to them costme 10 bucks and I got nothing
  79. <mopar> give it a rest you're like a dog with a chewtoy.
  80. <mopar> funkychicken: oh. ok.
  81. <camerongray> No, I just hate people that sell machines with pirated software!
  82. <funkychicken> I suggest you sell computers with unbuntu on them I like unbuntu
  83. <camerongray> I like Linux, but not worth as much selling
  84. --> guest_13 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
  85. <funkychicken> i use three op systems right now I vista ultimate windows7pro and unbuntu
  86. <camerongray> mopar: I'm selling properly licence Vista and XP machines, others are selling the same machines running pirated copies of Windows 7 which of course sell easier than mine as people don't realise - Can't you see how that annoys me?
  87. <mopar> yeah
