  4. <Irreducibilis> Okay, so on each startup, Compiz crashes -- and in order to fix it, I need to open a terminal and run compiz from there to restart it, after which it works fine.
  5. <Irreducibilis> But why is it crashing on startup, and how can I fix it?
  6. <balor> Cyclo: Are you looking for something like Brasero?
  7. <DiscordianUK> or k3b

  9. <ttiicc> wonder if you guys have a article which is pointed for users switching from debian to fedora?
  10. <DiscordianUK> None that I know of, Tticc
  11. <ttiicc> ahh okej
  12. <Irreducibilis> ttiicc, Its pretty easy, though.
  13. <Irreducibilis> Just beware of SELinux (enabled by default), and use yum for package management
  14. <Cyclo> balor, yeah
  15. <DiscordianUK> Selinux is good7
  16. <DiscordianUK> -7
  17. <ttiicc> okej so SELinux and the pckagemanagement are the big differense which I should learn first?
  18. * kode54 has quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
  19. <Irreducibilis> Well yeah... but if I want to run apache and stuff, its more configuration to have it not blocked
  20. <DiscordianUK> man httpd.selinux explains what to do

  30. <Khaytsus> BEWARE of selinux??
  31. * bsund has quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
  32. <Khaytsus> selinux "just works" for a typical desktop environment, if it doesn't it's a bug.
  33. <Khaytsus> And it's pretty easy to fix stuff for non-Fedora packages, it generally tells you exactly what to do to make exceptions or fix contexts.
  34. <fenrus02> Irreducibilis, hardly. Have you bothered to read the doc on selinux + services ... such as apache?
  35. <fenrus02> on cleverly hidden in plain sight url is found here --> http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/13/html/Managing_Confined_Services/chap-Managing_Confined_Services-The_Apache_HTTP_Server.html

  37. <Irreducibilis> I was specifically referring to my experience with the xampp pack
  38. <Irreducibilis> In which you simply download it and extract it to /opt/lampp/ and then /opt/lampp/lampp start
  39. <DiscordianUK> We don't ship xampp
  40. <Irreducibilis> Which generates errors and does not startup unless SElinux is temporarily disabled.
  41. <DiscordianUK> It's not a Fedora package
  42. <Irreducibilis> Yes, I figured as much.
  43. <fenrus02> Irreducibilis, ahhh! so you broke it horrible, and expect things to default working for you?
  44. <Irreducibilis> ***note: I didn't come here to ASK for help with XAMPP
  45. <Irreducibilis> I'll figure that out on my own, but I thought I'd report my experiences.
  46. <DiscordianUK> You started by giving bad advice
  47. <Irreducibilis> Other than that, I guess SElinux is pretty good
  48. <DiscordianUK> Please desist
  49. <Irreducibilis> And then I came in here asking a question about an actual fedora package and was ignored because say...
  50. <Irreducibilis> I'm not an expert like everyone else.
  51. <Irreducibilis> Which I apologize for, but I am trying to learn.
  52. * DiscordianUK isn't an expert
  53. <fenrus02> Irreducibilis, step1) Dont bother using "xampp"
  54. <DiscordianUK> We're all learning
  55. <fenrus02> Irreducibilis, step2) Read the docs. They really are *quite* nice.

  57. * Khaytsus vomits all over xampp
  58. <Irreducibilis> fenrus02, I don't care about xampp. I asked earlier about compiz and why it insists on crashing on each startup for no reason (actually, the reason is that it started doing this after I was forced to reset all selinux flags or something on installed packages, because of problems -- at the advice of someone from this very channel)
  59. <fenrus02> Irreducibilis, Oh easy. its compiz.
  60. <Khaytsus> Highly unlikely selinux is causing any problems with compizz.
  61. * rock808 has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
  62. <joaopinto> Irreducibilis, thanks for your feedback, for those of us which are not familiar with SELinux it's important to understand that it means extra configuration management if we need to use non packaged applications
  63. <Khaytsus> joaopinto: And little to no effort on already packaged. Don't get misdirected.
  64. <fenrus02> joaopinto, Reconsider carefully if you want to use unpackaged junk
  65. <joaopinto> Khaytsus, please note that "if we need to use"
  66. <Irreducibilis> Well maybe the fix prompted the problems because it was working in an "incorrect" but working manner before
  67. <Khaytsus> Irreducibilis: No. It's not. You can obviously easily test this by disabling selinux. It will not help.
  68. <joaopinto> fenrus02, please be respectful with other FOSS developers
  69. * xaphir has quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
  70. <Irreducibilis> I suppose I could.
  71. <Irreducibilis> And yes, not everything I need is available as an rpm.
  72. <fenrus02> joaopinto, Please actually *LOOK* at what xampp does and installs.
  73. <fenrus02> joaopinto, Once you understand that, you will know that fedora already has it.
  74. <Irreducibilis> fenrus02, Is it just as easy?
  75. <fenrus02> Irreducibilis, Easier.

  79. <joaopinto> fenrus02, where did you see my refering to xampp ?
  80. <Khaytsus> XAMP is okay for Win-nubs, but it's totally pointless for a packaged distro.
  81. <fenrus02> joaopinto, you interjected when the topic was xampp. If you have some other application - what is it?
  82. * Irreducibilis switched to linux from windows about 8 months ago :/
  83. <Irreducibilis> I like linux way better, but why... when you want to ask a question...
  84. <Irreducibilis> nevermind.

  86. <Irreducibilis> I can see if its something that's been asked a million times before, or is a "Really" stupid question.
  87. <joaopinto> fenrus02, lives, frostwire, and certainly many others which are not available from the repositories yet
  88. <fedbot> Please visit our trac instance at https://fedorahosted.org/irc-support-sig/ and file a feedback ticket telling us about your experience in #fedora. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
  89. <fenrus02> Irreducibilis, the vast majority of all questions asked here are already answered via even a cursory glance at the documentation posted on docs.fedoraproject.org ...
  90. <Irreducibilis> I'll go ask somewhere else for help. Thanks though.
  91. <fenrus02> joaopinto, if you have a specific application that is having issues, there are folks to help. If you have generalizations, you will be blamed harshly for incorrect analysis
