2.
I just had a new gas steam boiler replaced and would like some guidance on how to best drain the system. I had wanted to run a hose directly to the basement cleanout trap through the knockout cap, perhaps by having the hose permantly connected to some type of cover for the trap in place of the knockout cap. I was told that is not the proper thing to do and that I should not keep removing the trap cover to drain the tank. I do not have another floor level drain in the basement. Since the hose needs to be below the surface of the boiler drain, it makes it difficult to even put the hose into a bucket and then walk it to the sink. Is there an easier way? TIA
5.
Hi all, I purchased a shower tower for my new master bath remodel. The tower only comes with SS braided female thread lines (~16") for both the cold and hot water. My question is "what is the correct 1/2" water supply plumbing for both behind the wall and coming thru the wall"? I see that a dog ear elbow is used behind the wall, but from the shower tower literature it seems that there is a special 90 degree angle that is attached and can either be pointed in the upward or downward direction (within the shower and hidden behind the shower tower). What is this 90 degree angle piece? Thanks, Paul
21.
Hey all you fellow DIY people! I thought that since my main occupation is excavating and plumbing, I could give you some pointers on maintaining a healthy septic system. Septic systems are very costly and there is nothing worse than not being able to take showers or do laundry. So listen up! These are a few simple steps you can do to save yourself money and headaches:
22.
23. 1.) Pump it!
24.
25. You should be having your septic tank pumped every 2-3 years. The reason being is that solids will build up as time goes on. This can cause clogs and also allow solids to get into your leach field. Solids + leach fields = failed system. Pump your tank! and..
26.
27. 2.) Inspect your baffles
28.
29. When you are having your tank pumped, check to make sure your baffles are in place! Baffles are simply just a little wall or pipe that will trap solids in the tank and allow the liquid to flow out. Solids will flow out of your tank if baffles have fallen off or are broken. Baffles will keep your leach field healthy. Leach fields are the most pricey part of a septic system.
30.
31. 3.) Don't dump ... in excess :p.
32.
33. Dumping lots of antibiotics or bleach or other strong chemicals down your drains can harm your septic system. See, there are good bacteria in your septic tank that break down your solids. If you dump tons of these things down the toilet, it could kill off a lot of the bacteria and harm your system.
34.
35. 4.) Coffee grounds in the garbage!
36.
37. This is actually not as big of a deal as some people make it out to be. In my years of plumbing I have never had a clogged line due to coffee grounds. Maybe it caffeinates the bacteria in your septic tank and they get a buzz. Just better to dump them in the garbage :D
38.
39. That's all. Pretty simple and doesn't take much time. I hope you all learned something. If you enjoyed this post, please take a second to check out the new Trenchless truck we designed on on website. Rochester Plumbing:rolleyes:

60.
The dreaded blue screen error affects everyone at some point or another. Why these things happen is generally a mystery. Frequently when the http://registrycleaners10.com/speedypc-pro-review/ occur, a job is being executed and the suddenly the system crashes. A lot of figures and words flash across the screen and then your system reboots. Thus there's no concept of what caused the mistake.
61.
62. To fix this problem go into the startup menu when windows is booting, and then find the option to avoid the computer from automatically restarting on problems. When the computer crashes again, the blue screen may indicate a lot of information that is generally unintelligible to the lay person. A number code will be that's about nine numbers long. Copy this down.
63.
64. Next, do a search of the Microsoft knowledge base using the code you wrote down. The knowledge base is the number 1 application in figuring out what the problem is. After you have the data, you can go into your computer system and repair the error. Often it is a software issue, and other times it is a hardware problem. The two most typical reasons for a blue screen is due to failing memory and bad graphics drivers.
65.
66. In the case of failing memory, there may be a few reasons for that as well. The computer could be dirty, the memory could be old, or the computer may be overheating. Most of these will give memory problems and cause blue screens.
67.
68. You start with the simplest first, open the computer and observe much dirt and dust has accumulated. If the system is clear, then go to the next option. Check to see if the computer is overheating.
69.
70. When the computer is first starting, press the del important or f2 key, they are the most common keys to get into bios. Different producers have different keys though. Once in bios, check the area beneath the advanced tab and go through the hardware monitor. This may supply the current running temperature of the CPU and the pace of the followers for the CPU and the frame. A good reading may be at or below 50 degrees centigrade. If this information doesn't be found by the computer, then there are applications that can be saved which will present the temperature as well.
71.
72. If the temperature is high, then improving the circulation to dissipate the heat will accelerate the computer. This is often done by installing more cooling enthusiasts, or by opening the case a little bit.
73.
74. The other cause of blue screens is the graphics driver. Clearing out the previous driver and reinstalling a new one will often take care of the problem. The drivers get corrupted after a while especially when applications are installed and refreshing the drivers will make the system balanced once more. While these will be the most common reasons for the blue screen, they are by no means the only causes.
134.
I was asked to clean up a two bedroom condo up in Whistler not far from my North Vancouver home this week and thought I would share this process with anyone keen enough to tackle the cleaning job of a Schluter Sytems Kerdi drain. The strainer portion of the Kerdi drain comes off easily with just a philips screwdriver unless the tile setter grouted the screws over like the one I worked on.
135.
136. To access the screws first I used the tip of a sharp drill bit to loosen up the dried grout. This should be done when installing the strainer but was not years ago when this shower was built. Once I removed the excess grout I used a philips screwdriver and untwisted the screws. Careful you don't drop them since they are stainless steel and if they go donwn the drain you will not retrieve them with a magnet.
137.
138.

141.
142. With the cover removed you can see the nasty junk that had built up inside the drain, out of sight from the user. This is nasty old shower scum, some soap and some hair - all blended into a crusty mess. I used a rag to pull away as much as possible. Yuck.
143.

145.
146. With the strainer I decided to soak it overnight in a small dish of dishwashing soap and warm water. You can see how much black scum or mold was building up on the bottom side of this strainer.
147.
148.

151.
152. After this was soaking I acid washed the entire shower and was careful to not let the acid sit on the strainer base of Kerdi drain for to long. Strong cleaners can stain the stainless steel Kerdi drain. I neutralized the acid with multiple fresh water rinses and called it a day.
153.
154. The next morning I scrubbed the drain with a glass scrubber and it shinned right up. I chipped away little bits of grout with a screwdriver end (standard) and then shined it up with a SOS pad. Turned out great.

161.
162. Before re installing the screws I used the same glass scrubber brush to clean the inside of the shower drain. I used just soap and water and the drain looks brand new. This drain shows a black inside which is ABS but your drain might be grey and made from PVC. Taken care not to drop the screws down the drain I re-installed the Schluter cover and was done.
163.
164. The acid cleaning removed some of the efflorescence around the Kerdi drain but not all of it. The shower was poorly built and I will be suggesting we re-grout this shower to make some repairs and fill in missing grout.

182.
183.
184. If your Schluter Shower grill is stuck in the Kerdi Drain trim flange it is most likely the fault of the person tiling and grouting the shower. If some setting material or grout is wiped into the space between the grill and the trim flange - then removing the grill can be a challenge.
185.
186. Remember that the trim flange is set in plain non-modifed thin-set and might not be so thick. You do not want to exert to much force for fear of de-bonding the tile around the drain. It is safer to first wet the grout or setting material at the drain for a good thirty minutes. I carefully use my box cutter blade to remove the material bit by bit.
187.
188. If there is a lot then repeat the process. Re wet the material and then rake out the material again.
189.
190. L.C. wrote me that his contractor has not come back to remove the shower drain which is stuck and asked how to get it off. He managed to remove the screws shown in this picture but the grill does not come out.
191.
192. Notice below the grout set into the drain (between the outer drain flange) and the removable grill. Mostly on the top left side below. You can cut yourself so easily with a box cutter. Be careful with your strokes. The drain is stainless it can handle some scraping with a sharp blade - your hands, fingers and thighs can not!
193.
194. Once this is done you need to hook the grill with something. The Grill lifting key from ACO is perfect for this. In a pinch some times a coat hanger works or your keys.
195.
196. If the grill does not come up easy do not force it. Try repeating the steps above. Perhaps a slight sideways pressure will pop it free. A standard screwdriver and rubber mallet pretty safe tools I think. Careful the screws don't fall down the drain. They are stainless and will not be picked up easy with a magnet.
373.
Post(s) deleted by John Whipple
374.
375.
376. When designing a barrier free shower flow rate is critical and is affected by many factors. Pipe size. Venting. Volume of water. Direction of water flow and on and on. I have privately tested many of these new shower drains in my lab. Or as my wife calls it "HER LAUNDRY ROOM". One constant thing I have measured in high flow rate settings is the build up of water above the strainer - this can be between 3/8" and 5/8" depending on strainer design and how the water enters my test boxes. If your design a barrier free shower do not set the drain any lower than 3/4" below finished floor height!
377.
378. If you love the look of these new tile top drains make sure you realize that in your environment you may need to alter the look and add in the "Anti Air Lock" feature. As we install more I'll measure the flow rates and positions of the drains that don't work. As of today I know of four reported failures - three here in Vancouver and one in Chicago.
379.
380.
381.
382. Above you can see a 5"x5" tile top under water. This effect seams to happen only when the drain is dry and right after the shower is turned on. This drain design from Laticrete is a new design and differs already from the print image in the instructions. The instructions show similar feet that the drain does not have. The drain above was a similar design to the picture on the Laticrete install instructions.
383.
384. The little nubs or air bubble poppers might be the missing link the old tile top drain designs lacked.
385.
386. Time will tell.

394. The shower above was fixed by the installation of the "Anti Air Lock" collar and threw hole. I have since improved the install to include 306 stainless steel and a cleaner look. The proto type install worked wonders and the drain is working perfectly right now.
395.
396. All three of the installations failed in Vancouver with flow rates under 5GPM and one even with a flow rate of 2GPM.

408.
My buddy Tom called me today to wish me a happy Father's Day and ask for some advice. I was heading to work for a short spell and after hearing about his shower leak I told him I would be by in an hour. I helped Tom build his shower and wanted to see first hand the problem. When I got there the ceiling below the master shower was opened up and upon inspection we could see that the water leaked trough the hole where the hot water ran up through the floor in the stud wall cavity. The leak was only when the shower was in use so we started to look for answers.

411. "No leaks from the shower drain"
412.
413. First task is to check the shower drain for leaks. Having built it myself I was quite confident it was not this. The shower pasted a 36 hour flood test if I'm not mistaken and I set the linear drain myself and prepared the cement tile base. With water from another source we tested the shower drain and found there was no leaks.
414.
415. Next we removed the trim on the shower valve and looked in with a flash light. I could see a drip on the bottom of the shower valve just hanging and assumed it had to be coming from above.

424.
425. Once we ran the fixture for a second water poured down the wall. So we found the leak and now to fix it. I had hoped it was just a poor shower arm connection and was relieved to find this was just the case. The shower arm had a very short nipple and was hanging on with just one reveloution.

438.

I need some help Identifying some tools. I picked up a small toolbox at an estate sale, mainly for the Snap-on test light it contained. When I dug through it I found several odd tools and what appeared to be plumbing supplies -- lots of brass fittings and copper tubing. There were also lots of other plumbing fittings in the sale. I managed to identify most of the tools, even some handmade modified sockets, but there were a few items that I have been unable to find current versions of on any plumbing supply sites.
439. The first three are brass, and to my untrained eye appear to be some sort of jig, maybe for soldering pipe.

The new kitchenette sink drain is behind that wall, one foot to the left of the main drain. My new drain cannot be higher than the horizontal drain, so that presents a problem. 516.
Record high temperatures have been experienced in many parts of the country during this last summer, and unfortunately not everyone is able to afford central air conditioning, which is the mot efficient cooling option. There are some other options that are available to cool your home during the summer months, and these central air conditioner reviews can help you to decide.
517.
518. Cost
519.
520. The cost of keeping your home cool is an important consideration for most homeowners and the cost tends to be higher if you live in an older or larger home. You can expect to pay up to $1,000 for a central air conditioning unit, although this figure can be a lot higher if installing a unit will require a lot of duct work.
521.
522. You should also expect the cost of your electricity bill to be more; in fact it can be up to more than $100 if you have a central unit installed in your home. If you have problems with the unit, you will also have to pay for repairs or servicing.
523.
524. Performance
525.
526. After the cost, performance and efficiency are important to most homeowners and central air keeps your home at the temperature that you want, much more efficiently than other cooling methods.
527.
528. The air quality in your home is also better if you use central air, as most central air conditioner reviews will verify. If there is anyone in your home suffering from asthma or another respiratory condition, the filtration system in central units minimizes the risks and ensures they are as comfortable as possible. In addition, mold and stagnant air are kept to a minimum.
529.
530. Central Air Or Window Units?
531.
532. Window units are ideal for anyone on a budget, and the initial cost is a lot less than that of a central air unit, even if you buy several window units. However, the biggest drawback is that these units are simply not efficient and will struggle to keep your house as cool as you would like it to be, especially during extremely hot weather. Although the air quality is generally not as good, window units do a good Job of eliminating molds and allergens and you will find that your home is cool for longer even if the unit is not running.
533.
534. Central Air Or Fans?
535.
536. Fans tend to circulate the air and prevent it from becoming too stagnant, although they do not do a great job of actually cooling. If you are on a tight budget however, fans are certainly the least expensive option and when combined with one or more window units, can be more effective.
537.
538. The above alternative cooling systems and central air conditioner reviews should help you to decide which system is best for you. regardless of how you choose to cool your house, it is important to make sure that you are keeping cool, especially during really hot weather. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are all too common and keeping your home, yourself and your pets cool is recommended for everyone.

541.
Radiant panel heating offers a number of benefits to its residential and business customers. This form of heating is unique because there are radiant heat panels under the floor that use the floor to evenly distribute heat. This will heat your home from the floor up, which will warm your furniture and fixtures, making your entire home or business warm and cozy, even in the most extreme weather. The heat panels will also heat your feet, leaving you feeling warm and comfortable throughout the day.
542.
543. Radiant floor heating is ideal for the entire home, but is especially luxurious when used in the bathroom. The heat will naturally radiate from the floor and will comfortably warm your feet, leaving you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated before you begin your day. It will also make your guests feel special and luxurious when they have their feet warmed after the shower. Each zone of your home can be individually controlled by its own thermostat, so that you can choose whether you want to warm your bathroom, living room, bedroom, or kitchen, depending on what rooms you are using. This will allow you to save the most amount of money on your utility bill.
544.
545. In most cases, radiant floor heat can provide sufficient heating for both residential and commercial buildings. In very rare cases, additional heating options may be needed. This can be accomplished with the addition of a small heater, which can easily be purchased online and at most home improvement stores.
546.
547. Radiant floor heating is one of the most efficient heating solutions because not only will it serve as the primary heating source for your home or business, but it will also save you money every month, while providing a comfortable and luxurious means of warming your home. Radiant floor heating also takes considerably less time to thoroughly heat your home or business than traditional heating solutions.
551.
Adding double glazed windows can raise the overall look and energy efficiency of your house but you can still run into some problems with it. Read on to find out what these complications are and how you could remedy them.
552.
553. Upgrading your old windows with double glazing is a great home improvement measure that can certainly have direct positive effects. New double glazing will quickly improve the electrical efficiency of your house and add to its worth. But no matter how well you try to take care of your double glazed windows, you might encounter some issues with it.
554.
555. This article puts together an extensive list of the most typical problems people get in relation to their double glazed windows. Even though these only happen as a result of damages and even faulty assembly, we’re informing you now so you can stop them from happening at some point. Here are 4 problems you should be aware about:
556.
557. 1. Condensation on Double Glazed Windows
558.
559. Condensed double glazing sometimes happens either because of faulty parts and installation or humidity. Be wary of fractures in your double glazing or fittings no longer working properly as this may cause moisture build-up.
560.
561. Excessive variations in humidity can cause window condensation. If your home is a lot warmer than the climate outside, it can cause water droplets to form. Regulate the humidity level by making sure moist air inside your home goes out.
562.
563. 2. Non-functioning locks and busted handles
564.
565. Damaged handles makes your windows pretty much useless. Furthermore, having dysfunctional locks can raise risks of illegal entries and robberies. In case you begin to notice that your window’s handles and tresses are not in excellent condition, call your reliable repairman to ensure your home’s safety and protection.
566.
567. 3. Chipped Glass Panes
568.
569. Damaged window panes don’t manifest on its own. Most of the time, they happen as a result of an external element put on to it. It could possibly be a stone or a ball. Don’t keep that cracked window pane for a long time since you are likely to experience more issues if you keep them. So be sure you get them replaced right away to avoid moisture and security problems from happening.
570.
571. 4. Stuck hinges
572.
573. Jammed hinges on your window? Your window still remains a piece of equipment so it is safe to say that it still needs care. Have the hinges of your windows applied with lubricant frequently or on a schedule to help keep your windows working perfectly. Maintaining your window hinges prevent windows from jamming.
574.
575. A happy and secure home starts when your double glazing windows are in good condition so make sure you are aware about the key areas to take care of. 577.
Ok, I have read the blogs. But, I am still not clear. Does the rough-in fit flush to the front of the drywall, or the back of the dry wall. If you attach the valve to a 2" x 4"(1.5" vertical) stringer in a stud wall that is a 2" x 4"(3.5") there is only 2" left to the back of the drywall for a valve that is 2.75" from the back of the valve to the front of the rough-in. To Me it would make no sense for Delta to design a valve that would not fit in a 2" x 4" stud wall, so the rough in would have to fit flush with the front if the dry wall. Correct?? The drawing in another blog further down does not show dry wall...just a straight line for where the rough-in would line up. Thank you for any help!!!
579.
I purchased a newly constructed home in 2007. Each of the three bathrooms (2 up, one down) have Gerber Maxwell toilets. The downstairs toilet is a model 21-402 with 28-490 tank. The MaP rating is 300 grams. All three toilets have clogged weekly or biweekly since we (two adults, one pre-teen) took occupancy. I swapped-out the downstairs toilet with an American Standard that worked even worse. I subsequently re-installed the Gerber. We have ceased flushing paper but problems continue. In that all 3 toilets are consistently poor solid waste flushers is there any way to tell whether it is just a case of lousy toilets or is it more likely that there is something else wrong with the plumbing system? We do have low water pressure and the contractor installed a pressure assist device in the basement. I have seen posts suggesting low water pressure may be the culprit. I do not understand how water pressure has anything to do with poor flushing in a gravity-fed toilet other than refilling the tank. Our neighbors in this subdivision have different toilets: American Standard... and do not have problems. I remember visiting the house when it was being framed. There were all sorts of "cut-outs" round wooden disks from where plumbing and electrical paths were cut out or the flooring, studs... I often wonder whether one or more of these hockey pucks may have accidentally (or intentionally) knocked down into the waste line. I have also read that an obstruction in the vent stack on the roof top might be a cause.
580.
581. a. Does anyone know whether this particular Gerber model is a dud? The American Standard worked no better and I do not want to start a collection of unworthy toilets in my garage.
582.
583. b. Is low water pressure really a possible source of poor flushing? I checked the water pressure (without the power assist motor being plugged-in) a few years ago. I do not remember the actual reading but do recall that it was within normal parameters.
584.
585. c. Is it worth having the drain line "roto-rooted" (our subdivision was built on an old farm and wooded land that was bulldozed, not a tree remains so I am not sure roots could be a problem. The soil in our yard is extremely compacted - I presume from the logging and construction vehicles).

The latest, the water heater. We have been handed off a number of times from Legacy to the Home Store to Bradford White to Locke. No help whatsoever from any of them. We noticed water leaking outside around the concrete pad. Underneath there is a pipe hanging down leaking water. We called a plumber. Examination of the tank revealed a rusted out surface of the entire top of the tank. It is a 2011 manufactured tank and was installed last December. We are concerned about the safety in using the tank. The plumber said it needs a complete replacement. Since we cannot get any help my husband is planning on purchasing a whirlpool tank from Lowe's and having the plumber install it at our own cost and then filing a small claims suit against these companies. 642. The disposal blades eventually broke and the motor burnt out. You would think that would stop her, but she kept going on, forcing the pieces down the pipe until everything got so clogged that her kitchen overflowed.
643.
644. When my technician asked her what she was thinking she said, "I thought everything would just flush away by itself." True story.

here's how i handle this...if a customer opts to buy any fixture or equipment through me, faucet, sink, toilet, water heater, etc., then I will handle any warranty issues and no charge for service if required on said item for 1 year. If they supply it themselves then I don't give them the same "service warranty". That is my gaurantee that I will stand behind "my products", always bought through plumbing wholesalers.

650.
I worked up this example to show a client down South how to prepare a folded corner with NobleSeal CIS. This same example works with all sheet membranes and makes the most waterproof corner possible since the membrane is not cut.
651.
652. You can print out the pictures and then practice the folds until you understand the concept.

684. One of the largest advantages of NobleSeal CIS and NobleSeal TS is the ability to crease the sheet membrane. This little luxury makes installing these corners easier. Not all membranes have this luxury - most are too thin.
