I had wanted to run a hose directly to the basement cleanout trap through the knockout cap, perhaps by having the hose permantly connected to some type of cover for the trap in place of the knockout cap. I was told that is not the proper thing to do and that I should not keep removing the trap cover to drain the tank. I do not have another floor level drain in the basement. Since the hose needs to be below the surface of the boiler drain, it makes it difficult to even put the hose into a bucket and then walk it to the sink. Is  there an easier way? TIA[/spoiler]

I thought that since my main occupation is excavating and plumbing, I could give you some pointers on maintaining a healthy septic system. Septic systems are very costly and there is nothing worse than not being able to take showers or do laundry. So listen up! These are a few simple steps you can do to save yourself money and headaches:

1.) Pump it!

You should be having your septic tank pumped every 2-3 years. The reason being is that solids will build up as time goes on. This can cause clogs and also allow solids to get into your leach field. Solids + leach fields = failed system. Pump your tank! and..

2.) Inspect your baffles

When you are having your tank pumped, check to make sure your baffles are in place! Baffles are simply just a little wall or pipe that will trap solids in the tank and allow the liquid to flow out. Solids will flow out of your tank if baffles have fallen off or are broken. Baffles will keep your leach field healthy. Leach fields are the most pricey part of a septic system.

3.) Don't dump ... in excess :p.

Dumping lots of antibiotics or bleach or other strong chemicals down your drains can harm your septic system. See, there are good bacteria in your septic tank that break down your solids. If you dump tons of these things down the toilet, it could kill off a lot of the bacteria and harm your system.

4.) Coffee grounds in the garbage!

This is actually not as big of a deal as some people make it out to be. In my years of plumbing I have never had a clogged line due to coffee grounds. Maybe it caffeinates the bacteria in your septic tank and they get a buzz. Just better to dump them in the garbage :D

Once I removed the excess grout I used a philips screwdriver and untwisted the screws.  Careful you don't drop them since they are stainless steel and if they go donwn the drain you will not retrieve them with a magnet.

With the cover removed you can see the nasty junk that had built up inside the drain, out of sight from the user.  This is nasty old shower scum, some soap and some hair - all blended into a crusty mess.  I used a rag to pull away as much as possible. Yuck.

With the strainer I decided to soak it overnight in a small dish of dishwashing soap and warm water.  You can see how much black scum or mold was building up on the bottom side of this strainer.

After this was soaking I acid washed the entire shower and was careful to not let the acid sit on the strainer base of Kerdi drain for to long.  Strong cleaners can stain the stainless steel Kerdi drain.  I neutralized the acid with multiple fresh water rinses and called it a day.

The next morning I scrubbed the drain with a glass scrubber and it shinned right up.  I chipped away little bits of grout with a screwdriver end (standard) and then shined it up with a SOS pad.  Turned out great.

Before re installing the screws I used the same glass scrubber brush to clean the inside of the shower drain.  I used just soap and water and the drain looks brand new.  This drain shows a black inside which is ABS but your drain might be grey and made from PVC.  Taken care not to drop the screws down the drain I re-installed the Schluter cover and was done.

The acid cleaning removed some of the efflorescence around the Kerdi drain but not all of it.  The shower was poorly built and I will be suggesting we re-grout this shower to make some repairs and fill in missing grout.

If your Schluter Shower grill is stuck in the Kerdi Drain trim flange it is most likely the fault of the person tiling and grouting the shower.  If some setting material or grout is wiped into the space between the grill and the trim flange - then removing the grill can be a challenge.

Remember that the trim flange is set in plain non-modifed thin-set and might not be so thick.  You do not want to exert to much force for fear of de-bonding the tile around the drain.  It is safer to first wet the grout or setting material at the drain for a good thirty minutes.  I carefully use my box cutter blade to remove the material bit by bit.

If there is a lot then repeat the process. Re wet the material and then rake out the material again.

L.C. wrote me that his contractor has not come back to remove the shower drain which is stuck and asked how to get it off.  He managed to remove the screws shown in this picture but the grill does not come out.

Notice below the grout set into the drain (between the outer drain flange) and the removable grill.  Mostly on the top left side below. You can cut yourself so easily with a box cutter. Be careful with your strokes.  The drain is stainless it can handle some scraping with a sharp blade - your hands, fingers and thighs can not!

Once this is done you need to hook the grill with something.  The Grill lifting key from ACO is perfect for this.  In a pinch some times a coat hanger works or your keys.

If the grill does not come up easy do not force it.  Try repeating the steps above.  Perhaps a slight sideways pressure will pop it free.  A standard screwdriver and rubber mallet pretty safe tools I think. Careful the screws don't fall down the drain. They are stainless and will not be picked up easy with a magnet.[/spoiler]

When designing a barrier free shower flow rate is critical and is affected by many factors.  Pipe size.  Venting. Volume of water. Direction of water flow and on and on.  I have privately tested many of these new shower drains in my lab.  Or as my wife calls it "HER LAUNDRY ROOM".  One constant thing I have measured in high flow rate settings is the build up of water above the strainer - this can be between 3/8" and 5/8" depending on strainer design and how the water enters my test boxes.  If your design a barrier free shower do not set the drain any lower than 3/4" below finished floor height!

If you love the look of these new tile top drains make sure you realize that in your environment you may need to alter the look and add in the "Anti Air Lock" feature.  As we install more I'll measure the flow rates and positions of the drains that don't work.  As of today I know of four reported failures - three here in Vancouver and one in Chicago.

Above you can see a 5"x5" tile top under water.  This effect seams to happen only when the drain is dry and right after the shower is turned on. This drain design from Laticrete is a new design and differs already from the print image in the instructions.  The instructions show similar feet that the drain does not have.  The drain above was a similar design to the picture on the Laticrete install instructions.

The little nubs or air bubble poppers might be the missing link the old tile top drain designs lacked.

Time will tell.

The shower above was fixed by the installation of the "Anti Air Lock" collar and threw hole.  I have since improved the install to include 306 stainless steel and a cleaner look.  The proto type install worked wonders and the drain is working perfectly right now.

All three of the installations failed in Vancouver with flow rates under 5GPM and one even with a flow rate of 2GPM.

I was heading to work for a short spell and after hearing about his shower leak I told him I would be by in an hour.  I helped Tom build his shower and wanted to see first hand the problem.  When I got there the ceiling below the master shower was opened up and upon inspection we could see that the water leaked trough the hole where the hot water ran up through the floor in the stud wall cavity.  The leak was only when the shower was in use so we started to look for answers.

First task is to check the shower drain for leaks.  Having built it myself I was quite confident it was not this.  The shower pasted a 36 hour flood test if I'm not mistaken and I set the linear drain myself and prepared the cement tile base.  With water from another source we tested the shower drain and found there was no leaks.

Next we removed the trim on the shower valve and looked in with a flash light.  I could see a drip on the bottom of the shower valve just hanging and assumed it had to be coming from above.

I used my camera snake to look up inside the shower wall for more signs of water.  I found staining on the backer board.

Once we ran the fixture for a second water poured down the wall.  So we found the leak and now to fix it.  I had hoped it was just a poor shower arm connection and was relieved to find this was just the case.  The shower arm had a very short nipple and was hanging on with just one reveloution.

I switched out the brass nipple after double backing to my shop and with the new nipple we had the shower back in working form!

Has anyone encountered this problem and the eventual fix? I can pull out the Blower Assembly to clear/replace Burner Cone or clean the inside of the Block as necessary but hesitate to tackle this big job.

Thanks for the advice.  Yes, using 3.5" and have not had any difficulties for about 20 years.

Took apart the blower assembly and found the remains of 2 mice embedded in the burner cone on Friday.

Still concerned, I turned it on manually for a couple of days.  On Sunday morning, upon starting, thump, thump, thump in the blower assembly.  Another mouse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  This time it was still alive but worse for the wear and it crawled out of the flex pipe.

Looking to install a finer mesh filter ahead of the blower assembly.

The new kitchenette sink drain is behind that wall, one foot to the left of the main drain.  My new drain cannot be higher than the horizontal drain, so that presents a problem.  Not sure if I need to vent the new drain, as it would only be a distance of two feet from the main drain.

Currently there is a ceramic tile surround that only covers the wall for about 30 in above the top of the tub. Above that there is dry wall. The dry wall is covered with something that kind of looks like fiberglass. It's definitely not vinyl. I am concerned about the wall above the tile. If I install a shower head, is it necessary to extend the tile or to remove it and install a surround? If the dry wall is covered with vinyl or fiberglass and I calk it well at the top of the tiile, do I need to worry about water damaging the dry wall?[/spoiler]

The downstairs toilet is a model 21-402 with 28-490 tank. The MaP rating is 300 grams. All three toilets have clogged weekly or biweekly since we (two adults, one pre-teen) took occupancy. I swapped-out the downstairs toilet with an American Standard that worked even worse. I subsequently re-installed the Gerber. We have ceased flushing paper but problems continue. In that all 3 toilets are consistently poor solid waste flushers is there any way to tell whether it is just a case of lousy toilets or is it more likely that there is something else wrong with the plumbing system? We do have low water pressure and the contractor installed a pressure assist device in the basement. I have seen posts suggesting low water pressure may be the culprit. I do not understand how water pressure has anything to do with poor flushing in a gravity-fed toilet other than refilling the tank. Our neighbors in this subdivision have different toilets: American Standard... and do not have problems. I remember visiting the house when it was being framed. There were all sorts of "cut-outs" round wooden disks from where plumbing and electrical paths were cut out or the flooring, studs... I often wonder whether one or more of these hockey pucks may have accidentally (or intentionally) knocked down into the waste line. I have also read that an obstruction in the vent stack on the roof top might be a cause.

a. Does anyone know whether this particular Gerber model is a dud? The American Standard worked no better and I do not want to start a collection of unworthy toilets in my garage.

b. Is low water pressure really a possible source of poor flushing? I checked the water pressure (without the power assist motor being plugged-in) a few years ago. I do not remember the actual reading but do recall that it was within normal parameters.

c. Is it worth having the drain line "roto-rooted" (our subdivision was built on an old farm and wooded land that was bulldozed, not a tree remains so I am not sure roots could be a problem. The soil in our yard is extremely compacted - I presume from the logging and construction vehicles).

A softener will not get rid of the H2s.  Some common methods are chlorinization, contact tank, backwashing GAC then softening.  Pyrolox/Filox based systems are also a good choice but may still require some addtional oxidation if you have a low orp.  Aeration, air injection, and many other traetment methods are available.  Describe your waer supply.  Pump, storage tank...  this will help for a system design.[/spoiler]

I removed the mechanical stop on the splined shaft to verify the handle was completely closing and it appears it is, there's no sloppyness at the full on or full of stop. There is a significant drip still andwhen pulling the whole valve assy and putiing it back in there doesn't appear to be any slop, so I assume the o-rings are sealing. Additionally, I did not see any debris in the inlet side of the black valve cartridge and the outlet side springs open and closed with no sticking (small little white plastic pop valve). We got soaked doing the job.  It poured all day long but we managed to get most of the lines inspected and cleared over thirty feet of blocked pipe.  This home is taking in water through the West Elevations foundation wall.  We discovered that the rain water leaders belly in this section and are hoping this is the case.

Today we will re route these rain water leaders and cross our fingers that the home starts to dry out.

The disposal blades eventually broke and the motor burnt out. You would think that would stop her, but she kept going on, forcing the pieces down the pipe until everything got so clogged that her kitchen overflowed.
