  31.
  32. Overview:
  33. The Second Combine-Dominion War saw the value of the Bruin, both tactically and
  34. psychologically, but resurgent elements of the Rasalhague population in the
  35. Dominion demanded an assault mech that appealed to their own culture, rather
  36. than that of the Bears. Although hesitant to begin work on a new series of
  37. Battlemech in the same weight range, experiments were proceeding apace to
  38. develop the Dominion's Ferro Lamellor copy. Using that as a justification, the
  39. Thane was born.
  40.
  41.
  42. Capabilities:
  43. Built using an endo composite skeleton, the Thane devotes significant tonnage
  44. to the Ferro Lamellor armor which jumpstarted the design, giving it superb
  45. protection from weapons fire with the new armor composite. To facilitate an
  46. acceptable weapons load, the Polaris uses an XL fusion engine, allowing it to
  47. move at a top speed of 64 kph and mount significant weaponry.
  48. Although a brand new BattleMech, parts and materials shortages lead to the new
  49. Thane being armed with weapons from a variety of sources. It's primary weapon
  50. is a Gauss Rifle, taken from stocks used to arm the Bruin, which is supported
  51. by a pair of ER Large Lasers, sourced from the Ursus II. Next, a brace of three
  52. ER Medium Lasers, also from the Bruin, are mounted in the torso. For missile
  53. support, the Thane is armed with a Ghost Bear copy of the ATM-6, produced by
  54. Alshain Weapons as a next generation weapons project.
  55.
  56.
  57. Deployment:
  58. Since the start of Thane production in 3114, it has been built in small
  59. numbers, only a star's worth a year, though the versatility of the design has
  60. won it praise from the second line units that the Thane generally serves in.
  61. In 3126, the Thane proved it could hold it's own when an unknown pirate force
  62. using a number of Clan BattleMechs struck Richmond, attempting to destroy the
  63. Dominion forces on world. Star Commander Hollis, in charge of a training unit
  64. on the planet, attacked the Pirates, who were in the process of routing a mixed
  65. vehicle and infantry star. Star Commander Hollis challenged the leader of the
  66. pirates to a duel, noting the enemy's use of an LB-20 cannon. The Pirate leader
  67. accepted, and a short, but furious exchange occurred. Hollis' mech shrugged off
  68. the cluster munitions of the enemy machine, and pounded the Pirate to scrap.
  69. The remaining pirates managed to flee the system before the Dominion forces
  70. could regroup, leaving a number of questions behind.
  71.
  72.
  73. Variants:
  74. Though the Thane has been in service for almost forty years, only one other
  75. variant has been developed. The Polaris 2 trades out all but the electronics
  76. and Gauss Rifle, and removes half a ton of armor for a Large Pulse Laser, two
  77. Medium Pulse Lasers and an ATM-9.
  78.
  79.
  80. Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:
  81. Star Captain Hollis: Though Hollis has never received a front line posting, his
  82. enthusiasm and dedication for the defense of the Periphery border of the
  83. Dominion is undiminished. Though he is solahma age, the Star Captain continues
  84. to serve, training the next generation of pilots for service in the Ghost Bear
  85. Dominion.
  86.
  87.
  88. Additional:
  89. Quirks: Command BattleMech, Rumble Seat, Improved Sensors.
