  1. >Minuette’s lips press flat against yours as you kiss her deeply.
  2. >You take in her minty flavor from her freshly brushed mouth and savor it.
  3. >Slowly, you back her against the bed. She takes the hint and lies on her back while you straddle her…trailing kisses onto her neck.
  4. >Minuette’s breaths in your ear are long and laced with sexual desire.
  5. >”Anon…”
  6. >You don’t acknowledge her words. You just hush her lips with yours.
  7. >You rip off your shirt and hold your skin against Minuette’s warm coat.
  8. >This is all happening so fast. You don’t know why you’re doing this either…
  9. >MInuette’s hoof runs down your back.
  10. >She lets out a few stuttered breaths.
  11. >”Anon…”
  12. >Halfway reaching to undo your pants, you look into her eyes.
  13. >…
  14. >Minuette’s face is riddled with an expression of confusion and disappointment.
  15. >She wants to continue, but is really oblivious as to why you’re even doing this in the first place.
  16. >You ponder the reason too.
  17. I’m…I’m sorry…
  18. >You roll off the unicorn and slide your shirt back over your head.
  19. >Minuette leans up and sits with you on the bed.
  20. >It’s silent for a few moments as the two of you stare at the wall in another awkward silence. Neither one of you really knows what to say.
  21. >You feel guilty at what you just did, or were about to do. You’re no better than Rarity.
  22. >”Anon is…everything okay…?”
  23. >Is it?
  24. >With shaking hands, you wipe the angry tear that’s starting to break free from your eyes away. Just moments ago, you were confirmed in your suspicion that Rarity was unfaithful to you.
  25. >You look back to Minuette. Her face is plastered with concern. It’s probably best to explain why you burst into her room in the middle of the night and started kissing her.
  26. >With your face buried in your hands, you try your best to explain our strange feelings to her.
  27. She uh…I don’t know. I guess she wasn’t the one.
  28. >You pull your pack of cigarettes out of your jacket and light one.
  29. >Minuette follows action and soon breaths a small trail of smoke that chases yours in the still hotel air.
  30. >A heavy sigh; a rub to the forehead…that’s all you can do.
  31. That’s two years I’ll never get back.
  32. >You hang your head at the reality of your statement.
  33. >Minuette scoots close to you and places her head of your shoulder for comfort.
  34. >”It’s not all bad…”
  35. >You take a deep breath, incidentally taking in her shampoo’s scent from her mane.
  36. >Peaches.
  37. >”I mean, you can still…uh…”
  38. >Her words trail off.
  39. Exactly.
  40. >Minuette playfully smacks her head against you, which you return.
  41. >The two of your sit there together…smoking and propped against one another.
  42. >You need each other in this place…in this city. You’re all she has, and she you.
  43. >You pat her head.
  44. I’m sorry about…
  45. >You can feel yourself start to blush.
  46. >Minuette just giggles. She can see you’re uncomfortable and exploits it a little.
  47. >”What? Lunging at me?”
  48. >Your face sours at her choice of words before laughing at you.
  49. >”It’s fine, Anon!
  50. >She seems pretty comfortable with people just throwing themselves at her…or maybe just you.
  51. Yeah. Well still, it was uncalled for. I’m sorry.
  52. >You flick your ashes in a half-smashed juice bottle you dug from Minuette’s trashcan.
  53. >”So what really brought you here? I know I’m pretty irresistible, but come on…”
  54. >Her jokes are at least easing some of the tension and pain.
  55. Where do I even start?
  56. >Minuette releases her drag.
  57. >”Well let me see. I know why you’re here at the hotel, but I don’t know why you’re here in my room right now. Start with that?”
  58. >That doesn’t narrow it down any. You yourself have no idea why you came here. In the back of your mind you think that if you walked the streets, you’d have a chance to get hit by a carriage or something. That’d surely solve your problems.
  59. My girlfriend.
  60. >Minuette’s eyes dull.
  61. >”Well what about her…?”
  62. >You release your cigarette butt into the bottom of the bottle; the remaining grape juice at the bottom snuffs the ember instantly.
  63. Tonight was her big interview on Trotterman. She wasn’t going to go at first, but decided to anyways…otherwise I’d be gone by now.
  64. >Minuette elevates her brow. She’s clearly pondering what that would be like if you had been gone a few days ago.
  65. >”Anyways…”
  66. We were…”celebrating” and…
  67. >Minuette giggles like a young filly.
  68. >You shoot her a stern look.
  69. >She sees right through your fake anger and tries to compose herself through her giggles.
  70. >”Continue.”
  71. I don’t know. She wasn’t enjoying my company as much as would with someone else apparently.
  72. >Minuette’s frowns at your statement.
  73. >”Did she-“
  74. Yeah. Unless she was pronouncing “pie” really weirdly, it wasn’t my name.
  75. >”I’m sorry…”
  76. >A soft hoof rubs your back for consolation. It’s welcomed…you just want some compassion right now.
  77. So then I came here.
  78. >You spark another cigarette and inhale it.
  79. The end.
  80. >She’s silent for a moment.
  81. >”Well…I thought you went well with her.”
  82. >You scoff.
  83. I only go good with myself.
  84. >You try to not look at Minuette’s face. She’s on the verge of tears, but you’re too angry to cry anymore.
  85. >”I need to tell you something then…”
  86. >What?
  87. >You look at her intently.
  88. >With a sigh, Minuette speaks up.
  89. >”The night you were at the lounge with her and her friends…”
  90. >You remember. Your first encounter with Pierre.
  91. >”I had just gotten a call from my publisher telling me that if I didn’t deliver on this play article, that I was up for review. I was so worried that I was about to lose my job…a job I don’t even like.”
  92. >You had no idea. You pet her minty mane to comfort her.
  93. >She smiles at you.
  94. >”Thanks again for that drink…things could have been a lot different if I never got it. I probably wouldn’t have even gone to the play and I’d be home right now.”
  95. >Her words confuse you. She’s thanking you for helping her keep the job she hates?
  96. Yeah…no problem. I could tell you needed it.
  97. >You laugh with her.
  98. >Her giggles trail off as her voice changes tone.
  99. >”Well, after you left that night I saw that stallion talking to your girlfriend.”
  100. >You start to ball your fist at the image in your head but slowly unclench it. You knew it probably happened anyways.
  101. >”They kept kissing and laughing when they talked. I’m sure they didn’t see me looking at them, but it was hard to ignore.”
  102. >No surprises here.
  103. >Yet, the frustration rises in your blood.
  104. >”To be honest, it was pretty disgusting.”
  105. >Minuette tries to coax a laugh out of you. All you can muster is a weak smile.
  106. >You get off the bed and walk to the window and look at the night sky.
  107. >”Anon…I’m sorry this happened.”
  108. >The lights of the city still blink in an inorganic, pulsing rhythm that you will never get used to.
  109. It’s okay.
  110. >Minuette walks to your side.
  111. >She peers upward, moving her head from side to side.
  112. What are you looking for?
  113. >She groans.
  114. >”When I was a filly, my mom told me about this constellation that was in the shape of a cat and it would move if you stared at it long enough.”
  115. What?
  116. >Minuette huffs.
  117. >”I know it’s not true, but sometimes I look anyways.”
  118. >She giggles at past memories.
  119. >You look at her still trying to find the stars.
  120. Hey…wanna go outside? You can see it better.
  121. >Minuette’s eyes light up at your offer.
  122. >”Sure!”
  123. >Outside, the air bites your skin. Your thin oxford shirt does little to shield you from it.
  124. >You enter the delusional city’s crowds with Minuette in tow.
  125. >Minuette continues to look skyward as you stroll down the street.
  126. It doesn’t exist…you said so yourself…
  127. >”I know…”
  128. >You continue to wander, unsatisfied with yourself.
  129. >You used to be a drunken madman. Now you’re neutral again, but still wandering.
  130. >Are you just a whipped dog? Too soon to tell.
  131. >Minuette slowly lowers her head from the sky. She’s given up.
  132. >She stares at the passing pedestrians with you.
  133. >It dawns on you that Rarity has no idea where you are. When you stormed out, you gave no hint as to where you were going.
  134. >She could even be in this crowd looking for you.
  135. >No…she wouldn’t be looking for you. That would mean she has to care about someone other than herself.
  136. >You and Minuette decide to stop looking for the fabled cat stars.
  137. >On the elevator ride back up, Minuette departs.
  138. >As you watch her walk away, you quickly block the doors from shutting and follow her to her room.
  139. >”Yes?
  140. >You hesitate before asking.
  141. Can I stay here tonight, or for a little while? Would that be okay?
  142. >Minuette ponders loudly.
  143. >”Hmm...I dunno, Anon…”
  144. >You smile and push passed her into the open door.
  145. Thanks.
  146. >You go to the bathroom and wash your face.
  147. >This night…
  148. >You don’t really want to return to Rarity ever again after this. Maybe you’ll just break it off with her when you return home and start your life over.
  149. >After drying, you climb into bed with Minuette. It’s 1p.m.
  150. >She rolls over to face you, her eyes heavy with fatigue.
  151. Thanks again for letting me stay here tonight.
  152. >She smiles to signify her response.
  153. >”Goodnight, Anon.”
  154. >Minuette clicks the light off but you remain awake for a few minutes thinking.
  155. >This is all so much.
  156. >You slowly get out of the bed and take the elevator to your room.
  157. >It’s a bad idea, but you don’t plan on returning permanently; just to tell Rarity off and that you’ll be returning home alone soon.
  158. >Your mind flares with the images of telling her. You don’t want to hurt her and make her cry, but in this perfect moment, you would relish the moment if in all likeliness it were to happen.
  159. >Here you are. Outside your door.
  160. >After a steady breath, you knock hard on the door.
  161. >You wait a few moments; no answer. It’s really late in the night.
  162. >You hear a voice on the other side.
  163. >”Yes?”
  164. >It’s not Rarity.
  165. >Your hand is still balled tightly from knocking on the door, and you have no intention of unclenching it.
  166. >You speak to Pierre’s floaty, accented voice beyond the door.
  167. Can I see her? I need to tell her something.
  168. >You just want to get this over with and be done with it.
  169. >The door opens. His smug face, perfectly concealed with the right amount of blonde mane…it boils your blood.
  170. >”Oh, I’m sorry…she’s not here at the moment. Can I take a message?”
  171. >His words echo your phone conversation with him earlier.
  172. >His grin sets you on edge.
  173. >You try to peer around him. Rarity is obviously sleeping in the bed you once shared with her. Her blanket is thrown on the floor…forgotten.
  174. Fine. Just tell her I’m leaving tomorrow.
  175. >He smirks and scoffs.
  176. >”Like she’ll care.”
  177. >Rarity is lulled in a deep slumber.
  178. >She’s moved on…obviously.
  179. >This is the end of your relationship.
  180. Whatever. Goodbye.
  181. >You start to walk away, but the door is still open and Pierre still stands there.
  182. >You stop in your tracks and turn around to look at him. A wave of anger sweeps across you.
  183. >In an instant, you turn on the ball of your heel. Briskly, you rush to face Pierre.
  184. >His face worries as you come closer.
  185. >You quickly bring your fist up and thrust it forward, connecting with Pierre’s perfectly manicured face.
  186. >There’s a sting of pain as you feel his skull absorb your punch to his mouth.
  187. >You hold your hand in pain.
  188. >That felt good.
  189. >Pierre recoils as his hooves cover his bleeding nose.
  190. >He slams the door in your face.
  191. >All you can do is smile and walk back to Minuette’s room.
  192. >You snuggle into the warm bed with the unicorn.
  193. >Though you hold your hand in pain, you are at peace.
  194. >You sleep like a baby that night.
