  3. A standards-based protocol is a process that has been endorsed by the networking industry and approved by a standards organization. The use of standards in developing and implementing protocols ensures that products from different manufacturers can interoperate successfully. If a protocol is not rigidly observed by a particular manufacturer, their equipment or software may not be able to successfully communicate with products made by other manufacturers.
  4.
  5. Open standards encourage interoperability, competition, and innovation. They also guarantee that no single company’s product can monopolize the market, or have an unfair advantage over its competition.
  6.
  7. A good example of this is when purchasing a wireless router for the home. There are many different choices available from a variety of vendors, all of which incorporate standard protocols such as IPv4, DHCP, 802.3 (Ethernet), and 802.11 (Wireless LAN). These open standards also allow a client running Apple’s OS X operating system to download a web page from a web server running the Linux operating system. This is because both operating systems implement the open standard protocols, such as those in the TCP/IP protocol suite.
  8.
  9. Standards organizations are important in maintaining an open Internet with freely accessible specifications and protocols that can be implemented by any vendor. A standards organization may draft a set of rules entirely on its own or in other cases may select a proprietary protocol as the basis for the standard. If a proprietary protocol is used, it usually involves the vendor who created the protocol.
  10.
  11. Standards organizations are usually vendor-neutral, non-profit organizations established to develop and promote the concept of open standards.

  17. The physical layer encodes the frames and creates the electrical, optical, or radio wave signals that represent the bits in each frame.
  18. These signals are then sent on the media, one at a time.
  19. The destination node physical layer retrieves these individual signals from the media, restores them to their bit representations, and passes the bits up to the data link layer as a complete frame.
  20. The OSI physical layer provides the means to transport the bits that make up a data link layer frame across the network media. This layer accepts a complete frame from the data link layer and encodes it as a series of signals that are transmitted onto the local media. The encoded bits that comprise a frame are received by either an end device or an intermediate device.
  21. The physical layer refers to electrical and physical aspects of devices. In particular, it specifies how a device sends and receives information, such as using copper wires or fiber-optic cables. Examples of this include Ethernet or fiber optic cables, phone cords used for dial-up or DSL services, the coaxial cable used to provide broadband internet, the wires used to connect various components of a computer or even the radio signals used in wireless communication. Other functions of the physical layer include the conversion of signals into something that another layer can use (referred to as a bit), and adjusting the signal to allow for multiple users to use the same connection.

  25. (2nd)The Data-Link layer ensures that an initial connection has been set up, divides output data into data frames, and handles the acknowledgements from a receiver that the data arrived successfully. It also ensures that incoming data has been received successfully by analyzing bit patterns at special places in the frames.(2nd)
  26. ---------------------------
  27. (1.svar.The data link layer's primary function is to ensure data is received by the correct device in a network using hardware addresses, called MAC address, and then convert that data into bits for the physical layer to transmit. It also manages error notification, flow control and network topology.)
  28.
  29. (3nd)The data link layer is used for the encoding, decoding and logical organization of data bits. Data packets are framed and addressed by this layer, which has two sublayers. The data link layer's first sublayer is the media access control (MAC) layer. It is used for source and destination addresses. The MAC layer allows the data link layer to provide the best data transmission vehicle and manage data flow control.
  30. The data link layer's second sublayer is the logical link control. It manages error checking and data flow over a network.(3nd)
  31.
  32. The Media Access Control (MAC) sublayer of the data link layer is concerned with hardware addressing in order to get data to the correct network node or host. The MAC sublayer handles media contention, sharing, access between nodes and appending the footer information to the frame. It provides data link layer addressing and delimiting of data according to the physical signaling requirements of the medium and the type of data link layer protocol in use.
  33.
  36. This process would hamper protocol and network media innovation and development. This is a key reason for using a layered approach to networking.

  40. Contention-based access = All nodes operate In half-duplxed compete for the use of the medium but only one node can send at a time.
  41.
  43. By default, Ethernet switches operate in full-duplex mode. This allows the switch and the full-duplex connected device to send and receive simultaneously.
  44.
  45. Det finns Connection based Access CSMA/CD OCH /CA
  46.
Any bits received on an incoming port are regenerated and sent out all other ports,
  56.
  62.
  64.
  65. Oavsett om det är en Ethernet Lan som använder en hub, eller ett Wlan, contetinon-based system do not scale well under heavy media use. It is important to note that Ethernet LANs using switches do not use a contention-based system because the switch and the host NIC operate in full-duplex mode.

  77.
  78. If the destination MAC address is in the table, it will forward the frame out the specified port.
  79. If the destination MAC address is not in the table, the switch will forward the frame out all ports except the incoming port.
  80.
  81. As a switch receives frames from different devices, it is able to populate its MAC address table by examining the source MAC address of every frame. When the switch’s MAC address table contains the destination MAC address, it is able to filter the frame and forward out a single port.
  82.
