- With your partner, divide the two stories into 2-3 paragraphs each. Write a "P" where the new paragraph should begin.

- Sentence: subject + information about the subject
- Paragraph (a few sentences):
- - topic sentence (the "subject" of the paragraph, or main idea)
- - specific details about the topic (one or more sentences)
- (- concluding sentence - often if it's the first or last paragraph)
- Short (probably academic) Essay (a few paragraphs):
- - Introduction paragraph
- - starts with background information about the general topic
- - the last sentence is your thesis statement, it tells readers what
- the rest of the essay will focus on)
- - Body paragraphs - develop the topic with supporting details
- (if my thesis is, "My favorite place is the forest," these
- paragraphs will explain why that's my favorite place)
- - Conclusion (usually the most difficult to write)
- - Summary of your thesis and support
- - return to the general topic with ideas about the future or your
- opinion, etc.
- Longer article (or book):
- - Introductory section or chapter
- - Development sections or chapters
- - Conclusions and recommendations for the future
