  5. With your partner, divide the two stories into 2-3 paragraphs each. Write a "P" where the new paragraph should begin.

  7. Sentence: subject + information about the subject
  8.  
  9. Paragraph (a few sentences):
  10. - topic sentence (the "subject" of the paragraph, or main idea)
  11. - specific details about the topic (one or more sentences)
  12. (- concluding sentence - often if it's the first or last paragraph)
  13.  
  14. Short (probably academic) Essay (a few paragraphs):
  15. - Introduction paragraph
  16. - starts with background information about the general topic
  17. - the last sentence is your thesis statement, it tells readers what
  18. the rest of the essay will focus on)
  19. - Body paragraphs - develop the topic with supporting details
  20. (if my thesis is, "My favorite place is the forest," these
  21. paragraphs will explain why that's my favorite place)
  22. - Conclusion (usually the most difficult to write)
  23. - Summary of your thesis and support
  24. - return to the general topic with ideas about the future or your
  25. opinion, etc.

  28. - Introductory section or chapter
  29. - Development sections or chapters
  30. - Conclusions and recommendations for the future
