AlVARO LUNA HERNANDEZ has been buried in long-term solitary confinement for 13 years. As a young man, he set a racist cop's squad car on fire. Later, he was framed for a murder-robbery he did not commit. Freed after grassroots movement led to international pressure, he went back to his hometown of Alpine, Texas to seek justice for his best friend, Ervay Ramos, who was shot by a police officer years earlier before Alvaro's eyes. Alvaro was the National Director of the Ricardo Aldape Guerra Defense Committee, which was part of the successful campaign to free Aldape Guerra, wrongfully accused of killing a Houston cop. When Alvaro's research began to uncover missing money, Brewster County Sheriff McDaniels showed up to arrest Alvaro without a warrant. Alvaro peacefully disarmed McDaniels, saving his own life, and ran for three days. During the manhunt, McDaniels was interviewed and stated Alvaro did not threaten him. Afterwards, McDaniels testified Alvaro pointed his gun at him, for which Alvaro was sentenced to 50 years. He is 18 years into this sentence, and is eligible for parole in seven. Although he is not currently incarcerated for hitting Nazis, he supports swinging fists at them and (allegedly) has done so in his spare time, when he's not busy organizing prison work stoppages and jailhouse lawyering. He is 63 years old.
