  1. 1) Affix -an additional element placed at the beginning or end of a root, stem, or word, or in the body of a word, to modify its meaning.
  2. 2) Derivatonal Morphemes -can change the meaning or part of speech of a word they attach to.
  3. 3) Inflectional Morphemes -they serve a purely grammatical function, never creating a new wordd but only a different form of the same word.
  4. 4) Lexicon -a speaker's mental dictionary.
  5. 5) Morpheme -smallest linguistic unit that has a meaning or grammatical function.
  6. 6) Morphology -the study of the building blocks of meaning in language.
  7. 7) Prefix -morpheme that attaches to the beginning of a word.
  8. 8) Root -free morpheme that has no prefix or suffix.
  9. 9) Stem -free morpheme which affixes may attach to.
  10. 10) Suffix -morpheme that attaches to the end of a word.
  11. 11) Word Formation Processes -rules at work when there is a process in the creation of a new word.
  12. 12) Free morpheme -units that can stand alone as words.
  13. 13) Bound morphemes -can never exist as words by themselves and are always attached to a free morpheme.
