  1. =======================================================================
  2. IV. Legacy Audio Compatibility
  3. =======================================================================
  4.
  5. A. CHECKING DOS AUDIO CONFIGURATION
  6.
  7. Be sure to configure the games for Sound Blaster Pro or Sound
  8. Blaster operation. Typical settings are I/O 220h, IRQ5, and DMA3.
  9. You can verify your system is configured for these settings the
  10. resource tab under:
  11.
  12. Control Panel->
  13. System (Device Manager) ->
  14. Sound Video, and Game Controllers->
  15.
  16. Available settings:
  17. I/O range: 220h, 240h, 260h, and 280h
  18. Interrupt: 5, 7, 9(2), 10
  19. DMA: 1, 3
  20. Joystick port: 201h, 202h, 203h, 204h, 205h, 206h, and 207h.
  21. MIDI port: 300h, 310h, 320h, and 330h.
  22. Not all of these settings may be available, depending on the
  23. hardware in your computer.
  24.
  25. B. CHANGING THE HARDWARE CONFIGURATION
  26.
  27. Generally, you should not need to change the hardware settings.
  28. If you wish to use manual settings, use the following procedure:
  29. 1. Open "Sound Blaster Emulation", "Gameport Interface" or "MPU-
  30. 401 Interface" in the system control panel's "Sound, Video
  31. and Game Controllers" tree.
  32. 2. Clear the "Use Automatic Settings" checkbox.
  33. 3. Select "Basic Configuration 0007"
  34. (This lets you select all possible settings on your computer.)
  35. 4. Move the highlight to select the resource to change.
  36. 5. Press the "Change Setting" Button.
  37. 6. Change settings and press "OK."
  38.
  39. When you change DOS audio settings, the drivers automatically
  40. update the BLASTER environment variable in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  41. and DOSSTART.BAT configuration files.
  42.
  43. C. DOS BOXES
  44.
  45. Windows DOS boxes are launched from the "MSDOS prompt" in the
  46. Windows 9x Start menu. Simply run the game as usual. The game
  47. still needs to be configured for the Vortex hardware settings.
  48.
  49. Vortex provides wavetable support in DOS boxes if the game
  50. supports General MIDI output. To use wavetable in a DOS box:
  51. 1. Open the Vortex Control Panel MIDI tab.
  52. 2. Ensure that "Vortex Wavetable Receives DOS Box MIDI" is
  53. selected.
  54. 3. Open the application in a DOS box. Configure the music to use
  55. MPU-401 output.
  56. The Vortex drivers can also send MIDI to other software wavetable
  57. or external MIDI devices installed or attached on your computer.
  58.
  59. D. REAL-MODE DOS
  60.
  61. DOS runs in real mode when Windows 9x is not loaded, or when you
  62. restart the computer in MSDOS mode from Windows 9x. In real mode,
  63. make sure the game is configured correctly. Select Sound Blaster
  64. or Sound Blaster Pro for both the Music and the Effects device
  65. (unlike in DOS box where you can select MIDI for Music). You can
  66. select MPU-401 output if you have an external synthesizer connected
  67. to the Vortex MIDI port. Make sure the settings for I/O, IRQ, and
  68. DMA match the configuration for the Vortex card.
  69.
  70. When you install the Vortex drivers from CD-ROM, Vortex adds some
  71. lines to your computer's AUTOEXEC.BAT and DOSSTART.BAT files:
  72.
  73. PATH=C:/WINDOWS
  74. AU30DOS
  75. SET BLASTER=A240 I5 D3 T4
  76.
  77. AU30DOS is the Vortex real-mode DOS driver, which is installed in
  78. your default Windows directory (C:\WINDOWS by default). If Vortex
  79. detects an upper memory manager, it attempts to load AU30DOS high
  80. (see your memory management documentation for more information).
  81. Your computer finds AU30DOS via the PATH statement, which includes
  82. a reference to your Windows directory. Your computer then executes
  83. the AU30DOS program during boot. When AU30DOS is executed, you
  84. see text similar to:
  85.
  86. VORTEX DOS AUDIO DRIVER (2.002) Copyright (c) 1997-1999 Aureal Semiconductor
  87. PCI AUDIO PRO enabled at Ports 220-22Fh, Interrupt 5, DMA 3, Joystick 201h.
  88.
  89. Some games require the "SET BLASTER" line to find the sound card
  90. in your system. In the above example, the BLASTER environment
  91. variable is set to I/O port 240h, interrupt 5, and DMA channel 3.
  92. The "T4" parameter sets the Type of Sound Blaster to Sound Blaster
  93. Pro.
  94.
  95. When exiting from Windows to MS-DOS, the computer runs DOSSTART.BAT
  96. file in the Windows directory, in much the same way as it runs
  97. AUTOEXEC.BAT when you boot. Vortex thus places the AU30DOS.COM
  98. command and BLASTER environment variable in the DOSSTART.BAT file.
  99. These lines reinstall the Vortex DOS driver and reset the BLASTER
  100. environment variable. You do not need to run DOSSTART.BAT in Windows
  101. boxes.
  102.
