  1. >It was a good service
  2. >You were never INTENSELY good threads with rarity, but you came on principal
  3. >Everyone was there, even Mayor Mare
  4. >With a small, tight community like Ponyville, you'd expect that
  5. >A Pianist played a song the deceased wrote, I guess they went though her room and found some pieces she had from a little bit back
  6. >She must have sung the song around the house, because Rarity and the rest of the family started crying really hard when it played
  7. >A punch of ponies made short speeches
  8. >Apple Bloom and Scootaloo didn't say anything formally, but they left flowers and cried with everyone else
  9. >There were other, less related ponies who didn't cry, but they felt bad
  10. >Sweetie Belle never struck you as very interesting
  11. >It's a sad thing that she died, and you feel very very bad, but you didn't cry.
  12.
  13. >Apparently, she was found dead of poisoning
  14. >She was wandering around and tried eating some berries she wasn't wary of
  15. >What a horrible way to die
  16. >After the service, everyp0ny was let loose to get up and drink punch and talk about how sorry they were
  17. >You felt a bit like an outsider, so you sorta hung out in the corner with a red cup
  18. >Over walks your buddy Rainbow
  19. >"Hey, Anon."
  20. "Nice service."
  21. >"Yeah. She was a good kid."
  22. "Yeah. I didn't really know her that much, but she seemed... happy."
  23. >"Mmh." She takes a sip of punch
  24. >Twilight joins the equation. She has tear residue in her eyes.
  25. >"Hi, Rainbow. Anonymous."
  26. "Hey, twi. You ok?"
  27. >"I'm alright. You should see rarity, she's... a mess. *snff*"
  28.
  29. "Wow... really?"
  30. >"Yeah."
  31. >"What do you expect, Anon? It's her sister's funeral. If Scootaloo... ended up like that, I'd... bawl my eyes out too."
  32. >"She wasn't crying, Rainbow Dash."
  33. "What?"
  34. >"She hasn't cried tonight. At all. That's why she's a mess. I haven't read much about funerals, but I'd assume she should be crying a bit."
  35. "Wow."
  36. >"I guess she figures crying isn't too, 'ladyike'."
  37. "Hey. Quit it."
  38. >Dash quits it and gets a little quiet
  39. >The silence is infectious
  40. "I'm... I'm gonna go talk to her."
  41. >"Really? Why?"
  42. "Because I haven't ever really... you know, talked to her. I just think I should... say... something."
  43. >Dash agrees
  44. >"You should go, Anon."
  45. >You head off for the punch table, where rarity's been lounging with a red cup
  46.
  47. >Upon coming nearer, you observe Rarity talking to Applejack
  48. >You come up to the table and say hi
  49. "Hey, Rarity. AJ. What's up?"
  50. >"Hi, Anon. I was juss' payin' mah respects. Now, you just come get me if yall' wanna talk about anythin', okay sug?"
  51. >"Yes... sure."
  52. >"Oh, and Applebloom sends her... condolences, too."
  53. >"Yes.. she's a... wonderful... darling..."
  54. >Rarity's talking like she's hindered
  55. >AJ leaves
  56. "Hey, Rarity."
  57. >"Anonymous."
  58. "Uh.... I'm really sorry."
  59. >She looks at you like she might be mad
  60. >"Don't... Don't say that. That you're sorry. That doesn't even make sense."
  61. "Uhh..."
  62. >"Anon, It's... not your fault. It's a bit impolite to flood me with "sorries" when I'm trying to... *hic*... grieve here."
  63. >You pause a bit
  64. "Did... did you just hiccup?"
  65. >"Yes, Anon. I... It's not very graceful, but under the circumstances I think... I deserve some leeway."
  66.
  67. "You're right. I'm sorry i said... sorry... err... I just wanted you to know I'm... here for you."
  68. >"Wow, really? Fabulous."
  69. >She downs her punch and then turns around and refills her cup
  70. >She reaches in her dress and pulls out a flask
  71. >Woah
  72. >She pours some kind of liquor into her punch, filling up the other half of the cup
  73. "Uh... Rarity?"
  74. >She swirls her drink around a bit and takes a big swig
  75. >"Yes, darling? *hic*"
  76. "...You're drunk."
  77. >"...Quite."
  78. >You look around a little, then back to Rarity
  79. "... Are you serious?"
  80. >"Hmm?"
  81. "You're drunk."
  82. >"I'm also at my sister's... funeral. Your point?"
  83. >You pause
  84. "You just... didn't seem like that kind of person."
  85.
  86. >Rarity takes another big swig of her drink and hiccups again
  87. >You feel more uncomfortable now than ever
  88. "...Are... Are you serious?"
  89. >She looks at you like you're an idiot
  90. >"What do you mean?"
  91. "Are you serious? With this?"
  92. >She keeps condescending on you for a moment then trots, unstably, to the door of the room
  93. >She walks out on her sister's funeral
  94.
  95. >The next day
  96. >It's a normal day
  97. >Go to Sugarcube Corner in the morning to get a nice baked-goods breakfast
  98. >Blueberry muffins
  99. >Sit down and begin to eat
  100. >You're enjoying it
  101. >When you're half-way through, Pinkie comes down the stairs and says hi
  102. >You talk for a while before she heads out
  103. >After your muffin is done, you take a bit to lounge around and look out the window before the day really starts
  104. >From the left of the frame, Rarity arrives
  105. >She notices your face and stops to look at you
  106. >You're now separated by only a thin sheet of glass
  107. >She turns to come into the store and you brace for the awkwardity
  108.
  109. >She comes in and sits down opposite from you without a word
  110. >Awkwardity
  111. >"...So... how was the rest of the funeral?"
  112. "It was fine. You didn't miss much. Really, you were totally free to leave, the service was over, it's just the way you stormed out of there."
  113. >"Did I... make a scene?"
  114. "Not much. People attributed it to the general drama."
  115. >"Oh... That's... good, I suppose..."
  116. >Awkwardity
  117. >"Anon... I'm terribly sorry I brushed you off."
  118. "Don't worry about it."
  119. >"No, what I did was undignified."
  120. "I was just surprised by the booze."
  121. >"Yes..."
  122. "It didn't seem... canon. For you."
  123. >The seconds turn into a minute as you both compete to not look directly at each other.
  124. "Look, I know we're not really close friends. Really... don't worry about me. You have plenty of great friends, ones who you can really count on. Applejack. Twi. I don't have to be your listening ear."
  125. >More awkward
  126. >"Yes, but... I don't know..."
  127.
  128. >You look on as she gathers her words
  129. >"I can't talk to them..."
  130. "Hmm? I don't understand it, you and Applejack seem like decent love/hate friends."
  131. >"I know... Anon, the truth is... I don't think I'm really friends with anyone..."
  132. "What? That's absurd."
  133. >"Applejack... We're only friends because she's the OTHER least-liked pony... I try to be fancy and fashionable all the time but sometimes... I think ponies like me less for it."
  134. >Damn, these long silences are getting annoying
  135. "I'm your friend. I can be here any time you need to talk."
  136. >That's a strong commitment to a pony you barely even know, but you feel like it's the natural thing to say
  137. >"..."
  138. >Rarity starts to half-cry on the table
  139. >You sit with her and put a hand over her hoof
  140. >It's so damn sad
  141. >She looks up, noticing your friendliness
  142. >Gathering herself, she gets up and walks past you to go to the door
  143. >Upon passing you, she stops and hugs you
  144. >"Th-... thanks... It's so good having s-.. somepony who... cares..."
  145. >She leaves
  146. >That muffin sits in your stomach like a rock
  147.
  148. * * *
  149.
  150. >Later, you're in the park
  151. >Rainbow is with you, and you're loosely talking about the morning's events
  152. "...You think what she said was true?"
  153. >"What, that no one likes her? No! That's crazy, we're all best friends. I mean, I rip on her sometimes for being all girly and prissy and junk, but I'm just joking."
  154. "I feel bad. I'll say it: I've avoided hanging out with her."
  155. >Dash blushes a little
  156. >"... Okay... I guess I have too."
  157. "Right?"
  158. >"Well what can she expect? She'a always acting so pushy! She just insults people whenever they do something that isn't perfect!"
  159. "I know, Dash. I know she acts out sometimes, but you overlook things like that when you're friends with someone."
  160. >"Hmm. can we stop talking about Rarity? I keep thinking about Sweetie Belle."
  161. "I know. It's depressing."
  162. >"Scoot's devastated. She won't stop. Breaks my heart."
  163. "Yeah. From the way AJ was at the service, I'd assume Applebloom is depressed, too. It's terrible to lose a friend at that age."
  164.
  165. >There is a silence
  166. >"You don't think she'd... do something... dumb, do you?"
  167. >You dismiss the thought
  168. "No, no. Nah, I don't think so. She doesn't seem like that kind of person."
  169. >"Yeah, well, she didn't seem like an alcoholic either, but that changed fast."
  170. >A moment goes by, and a breeze comes
  171. >You shudder
  172. >Was it the breeze or the thought of a hanging Rarity?
  173. "...I guess you have a point."
  174. >You hope no pony dies today so there doesn't have to be any more drawn-out silences
  175. >Dash changes the subject, "Wanna do something fun this weekend?"
  176. "What?"
  177. >"The wonderbolts are flying in town on Saturday. Wanna go?"
  178. "I don't see why not."
  179. >The day goes on like no pony died
  180.
  181. * * *
  182.
  183. >Friday morning
  184. >Sugarcube Corner
  185. >This Breakfast with Rarity thing is becoming a routine thing
  186.
  187. >"So I said, 'Well, you can wear that if you WANT TO, but just know that you're the ONLY pony who wants to.'"
  188. >Oh man
  189. >Talking to this pony is like watching Sex and the City
  190. "... Oh man... Jeez, rarity, you're a riot!"
  191. >You both laugh for a while and chomp on your muffins
  192. >"Haha...! Why, thank you, Anon..."
  193. >You two share a silence with extremely low awkwardity
  194. >"Anon... thanks for this."
  195. "What? You paid for that muffin."
  196. >"Heh, no. I mean this. Just sitting here and... talking. In the mornings. It's so nice to share the company of such a well-mannered... friend.."
  197. "Hey, thanks. It's cool, isn't it? Nice to start off the day with a conversation."
  198. >"Yes..."
  199. >She seems very content with the scene
  200. "Well, it's time for me to go. Me and dash are going to see thw Wonderbolts today."
  201.
  202. >Rarity sorta looks at you for a second
  203. >"Oh... uhm... I've... never REALLY been a fan of the Wonderbolts, Anon..."
  204. "Come on, it'll be fun! Look, I know you and Dash are polar opposites, but it'd be good for you to get out."
  205. >She sits and it looks like the words are bouncing around in her head
  206. >"Well, I-... I was going to ask you if you wanted to help me make dresses today, actually..."
  207. >Oh
  208. "Oh."
  209. >"Yes. I thought we could work together a bit and... you know... socialize?"
  210. "Oh, I'm sorry, Rarity. I'd stay, but I already kinda made a commitment to Rainbow. We can do that some other time, though."
  211. >Awkwardity
  212. >"Heh.. yes."
  213.
  214. >You reassure her some more, thinking on your toes
  215. >Once she seems cheered-up enough, you say goodbye and leave
  216. >You're a bit worried about her
  217. >She seemed kinda depressed when you left
  218. >You ARE kinda her only REAL friend, and you basically ditched her for Dash
  219. >Screw it, she'll be fine
  220. >Wonderbolts!
  221.
  222. * * *
  223.
  224. >"Won-der-bolts!"
  225. "Won-der-bolts!"
  226. >Everyone's chanting
  227. >Big huge stadium
  228. >An announcer pegasus flies out onto the field
  229. >"ARE YOU PONIES READY?"
  230. >It's unanimous
  231. >The bolts are bid out onto the field
  232. >"Wow!"
  233. "I gotta admit, Rainbow, this is cool!"
  234. >"Cool? This is BEYOND cool!"
  235. "How often do you see the bolts, anyways?"
  236. >I've seen them 7 times, but never here. They almost never come to Ponyville, I always have to save up and go out to Canterlot or Manehattan or something."
  237.
  238. "Why do you think they don't come down often?"
  239. >"It's just not as big a venue. Why do you care?"
  240. >WHY DO YOU CARE
  241. "I don't."
  242. >"Then watch, they're about to sta-"
  243. >gunshot
  244. >The bolts are off
  245. >For some reason there's something resonating at the back of your head
  246. >It's Rarity
  247. >Something about painting
  248. >Something about a gun
  249. >That's stupid
  250. >She's not that kind of pony
  251. >"Are you eve watching this?"
  252. "Huh?"
  253. >Your daydreaming drifted your gaze high up from the field
  254. "Oh. Sorry, I'm daydre-"
  255. >"YEAH! WOO!"
  256. >You try to watch the races and tricks, but rarity keeps nagging at you
  257. >She's in a bad place right now
  258. >You shouldn't have left her alone like that
  259.
  260. >You think about what you could do about it at the moment
  261. >Turn to your right
  262. "Dash, I thi-"
  263. >"WHAT?"
  264. >The crowd is roaring like a dragon
  265. "I THINK I'M GONNA CUT OUT OF THIS EARLY."
  266. >"WHAT?! WHY?"
  267. "BECAUSE I KINDA DITCHED RARITY TO BE HERE AND I FEEL BAD!"
  268. >"DUDE! YOU'RE DITCHING ME RIGHT NOW!"
  269. "YEAH, WELL, YOUR SISTER DIDN'T DIE LAST WEEK!"
  270. >She thinks
  271. >"YOU'RE RIGHT. GO. BESIDES, YOU'RE DISTRACTING ME FROM THE ACTION ANYWAYS."
  272. >You get up and chuckle as you walk away
  273.
  274. * * *
  275.
  276. >Walking back through Ponyville
  277. >You can hear some voices just beyond Sugarcube Corner
  278. >Decide to investigate it real quick
  279. >Applebloom is talking to Mr. and Mrs. Cake
  280. >"Well that's fantastic, Applebloom! It's great to know it finally happened!"
  281. >"Yep! Ah was really happy when it happened! Ah just wish Sweetie Belle was here to see it."
  282. "See what?"
  283. >"Mah cutie mark! Juss' came in today!"
  284. >You eye her flank
  285. >It's a hammer and some nails
  286. >"Mah special talent was buildin' things all along!"
  287. >Mrs. Cake chimes in
  288. >"Isn't it great, Anon?"
  289. "It is! When did this happen?"
  290. >"Juss' this mornin'! Ah told Applejack an' Big Mac, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Mr. an' Mrs. Cake, an' you so far, an' Ah'm off to tell everyp0ny else!"
  291.
  292. "Aww! Well good for you, silly-filly! Oh, and I'm very sorry about what happened to Sweetie Belle."
  293. >"Me too... but Ah don't think she'd want me ta' keep bein' sad about it. Ya know, Ah think she helped me get mah' cutie mark in the first place... in a way."
  294. "Really? How?"
  295. >"Ah volunteered ta' help fix up some pews fer' the funeral. Ah reckon' that was part of it: Mayor Mare told me Ah was the best filly she ever saw with a hammer."
  296. "Well that's just great. You go tell everyp0ny else the good news, now."
  297. >"Bye, Anon!"
  298. >Applebloom trots off onto Mane St. to advertise her good fortune
  299. >Off to find Rarity
  300. >You get to her place
  301. >The door is open
  302. "Rarity? You there?"
  303. >No answer
  304. >You go to her room
  305. >No pony there
  306. >You scan the room for clues
  307. >Everything seems fine
  308. >You check her desk
  309. >There's nothing on it but a notebook and a few unidentifiable wet spots
  310.
  311. >Wet spots
  312. >Tears
  313. >Oh god
  314. >You open the book
  315. >The first bunch of pages are blank, but later you can see that she's been drawing some things
  316. >You open up to a drawing of a dress for Sweetie belle
  317. >Another dress for Sweetie belle
  318. >Another
  319. >Oh man you're bawwing inside
  320. >All these dresses have blank patches at the flank
  321. >You double-take her mannequin to see if she's actually made any
  322. >There's nothing on the mannequin, but all the fabric that's usually in the room is gone
  323. >You close the book and leave to find Rarity
  324. >You see Pinkie Pie walking by as you leave the house
  325. "Pinkie, have you seen Rarity?"
  326. >"Rarity? Why?"
  327. "Because I need to find her. I dunno where she is."
  328. >"Well... I THINK I saw her going down Mane St. a little while ago."
  329. "Which way?"
  330. >"Sssssouth? Maybe?"
  331. "Thanks, Pinks."
  332. >As you turn to find Rarity, she yells, "When you find her, tell her I said, 'Howdy-doody!'"
  333.
  334. >You're running south on Mane St.
  335. >Who might know where she is?
  336. >You stop Lickety Split
  337. "Split, have you seen Rarity?"
  338. >"Yeah, I've just been chillin' on this corner for a while now. She came down this way with a dress or somethin'. Went past that corner over there, but that's all I know."
  339. "Alright, I'll see you later, Split."
  340. >"Stay cool."
  341. >You turn and run off to the corner Split pointed to
  342. >Turn
  343. >There's nothing beyond it except a trinket shop and the
  344. >graveyard
  345. >graveyard
  346. >graveyard
  347.
  348. >Sweet Celestia
  349. >You run right for the graveyard
  350. >As usual, no pony's hanging out around the area
  351. >It's a pretty big graveyard
  352. >You're running through fields of death
  353. >A lot of the tombstones are really big, so it's hard to see everything
  354. >Deeper in, you hear a faint weeping
  355. >You follow it
  356. >You're trying to run as fast as your can, you keep double-taking between gravestones
  357. >You stop a bit, keep going, then go back
  358. >There she is, and it's terrible
  359. >She's sitting there, crying violently over her dead sister's 5-day-old body
  360. >You inch closer to her
  361. >"*sob*... nnh... Anon..."
  362. "Rarity. Come on, this isn't okay."
  363. >You get close enough to see down into the grave she's dug up
  364. >There lies the already-greenish, rotting Sweetie belle
  365. >face frozen in bliss
  366. >She's wearing Rarity's new dress
  367. >It's her masterpiece
  368. >On the flank, the blank patch, Rarity has painted her a cutie mark
  369. >It's a drawing of rarity and Sweetie Belle, a heart in between them
  370. >You extend a hand
  371. >She reaches up a hoof
  372. >You pull her up out of the grave and embrace her, dirt and all
  373. >"That thing they... *sob*... buried her in was just... awful..."
  374. "I know, I know."
  375. >You're still riddled with disbelief, but inside you think maybe this is good. She got to say goodbye.
  376. >"I mean, it was just the worst thing they could have.."
  377. "I know. It... it looks beautiful on her."
  378. >You embrace for a moment
  379. >After you two bury the grave again, you go back to Sugarcube Corner
  380.
  381. >The awkwardity in the room is saturated
  382. >Two inedible blueberry muffins sit on the table
  383. >It's 5 years before you speak
  384. "It's a great dress."
  385. >".... thank you."
  386. "We're... not gonna talk about this again."
  387. >"Of course not."
  388. >More silence
  389. >"I think...."
  390. >
  391. >"I think I can let her go."
  392. >
  393. >
  394. >She takes a big chomp of her muffin
  395.
  396. -END-
