  1. There was no way I could roll back to dodge it, so I jumped instead. My swords retracted and swung down below me as I clapped my hands. There wasn’t a source of fire outside my body to draw on, but there was a source of heat. The halogen lights above me that exuded warmth, so I could draw the potential energy from the city’s power grid.

  5. The lights along the road above me shone brightly. One by one, I heard them explode. Finally, there was the last light above me, shining with more light than it ever had before. It was as though I had brought forth the sun. Scar dodged my swords easily enough, reaching up to strike me with his hand.

  7. His eyes went wide behind his sunglasses. And in the light produced above me, how much energy was I gathering? I wondered: How much potential energy existed in a city grid? Enough that when the light above me exploded, all that energy came down in a swarm of electrified fire – all that power surrounded me.
