  1. Indie game review from Suda51(Grasshopper manufacture)
  2. homepage: http://www.grasshopper.co.jp/en/
  3.
  4. Suda 51: The president of Grasshopper Manufacture Inc. who loves indie games. Currently working on the brand-new title "LET IT DIE"
  5.
  6. --- I'm so much into this retrogame-ish style! ---
  7.
  8. Suda: I heard this game is your recommended title.
  9.
  10. Nishioka(Dengeki Playstation Chief editor): Yes, it is called "Assault Android Cactus". It was so fun when I first tried this in "BitSummit 2015". It is very well-made as an action game with several different level design. It's also available in PS4.
  11.
  12. Suda: Yeah, I agree with you. I like the taste of the overall screen design and the characters as well!
  13.
  14. Nishioka: Basically this game is a shmup-style action game. You can revive as many times while you have the "Battery", but once it's depleted, you'll fail. So don't miss those battery drops.
  15.
  16. Suda: A battery!? Oh, this one, ok. I like the easy control to switch the weapon, it's jsut simple and fun. So this game can be played in 4 player Co-op, right? I'm not sure if young readers know about this, but this reminds me of the "SmashTV" in SNES.
  17.
  18. Nishioka: Normal stages are not so hard, you can beat the level if you keep defeating small enemies, but the style changes in the boss battle. Of course it's fun, too. I hope more people try this game since it's already out in PS4. Personally, I like this game only because it is "SmashTV"-like game. Well, I have to agree with you that teenagers never heard of that game though...
  19.
  20. Suda: To think of it, maybe those young people might find this a new experience. Anyway, the action part is so delightful. Even the cluster of enemies appear at once, our attacks usually overpower them. We can survive the attack without much of a stress. Well, to be honest, I was surprised to see the fierce attack from the enemies from the first stage... We haven't even reached the boss yet, right?
  21.
  22. Nishioka: Of course not. To see our character dies so easily reminds us the good old arcade games.
  23.
  24. Suda: Maybe the genre for this game is "Challenging" or "Die and Learn" style.. But still the original feature of this game is losing your health doesn't mean the game over unless you have the battery. Oh, so now we are confronting the boss! ..wait, too many bullets! What a shmup!!
  25.
  26. Nishioka: Boss attacks are all shmup style, how do you like it?
  27.
  28. Suda: Honestly, I'm not good at those shmup games... Hey, maybe it's safe near the boss...!?
  29.
  30. Nishoka: Be careful. Boss shifts to the other attack when you inflict them enough damage. ...By the way, Mr. Suda, why are you standing? You are too much into it! LOL
  31.
  32. Suda: I cannot help it! Oh no, I don't think I can dodge this attack.. but we still have battery, we can win!!
  33.
  34. Nishioka: Boss also drops batteries when they lose some amount of health, so don't miss it! Now we are close!!
  35.
  36. Suda: Ah, but we are losing the battery! My battery!
  37.
  38. Nishioka: A little more to go so keep it up LOL. This boss is almost dying! But it's attacks become more fierce at the end.
  39.
  40. Suda: Woah! I cannot believe this!! No, I'm.. I'm dying.. maybe not, yes, YES! Phew, I won.
  41.
  42. Nishioka: Man, that was a best bout LOL.
  43.
  44. Suda: Yeah, and this game only costs 1480 yen LOL.
  45.
  46. Nishioka: Now you unlocked a new character since you defeated a boss.
  47.
  48. Suda: I like this one, too. I heard that the Australian indie developer called WitchBeam developed this game, but the character design looks more similar to Japanese ones. Some might believe if we introduce this as Japanese game, I guess. Well, contrary to those cute characters, the game itself is really hardcore. This might be due to the frequency of the battery popup? Thanks to the fact that you can revive as many times while you have the battery. I think this game is well-balanced around the battery system.
  49.
  50. Nishioka: You cannot have fun without a bit of difficulty, yes. Anyhow, you didn't talk much this time. You we so absorbed into the game, don't you? LOL
  51.
  52. Suda: I said I'm not good at shmup! I was so busy evading those that I cannot talk! Well, this was surely a good game with much "indie" spirit.
  53.
  54. Nishioka: By the way, it seems you can change the look of those lovable characters when you proceed the game.
  55.
  56. Suda: I listed "SmashTV" as a similar game, but maybe we'd better call this as "Gauntlet" style game.
  57.
  58. Nishioka: We had many arcade games having this kind of difficulty in the past.
  59.
  60. Suda: This game is easy to manage the control, it's fun for anyone. I'd recommend this to every kind of gamers.
