Director Bassett (Solomon Kane) clearly knows his way throughout the fantasy genre, along with the imagery, most of it lifted through the games, is visually arresting, specially the 3D-enhanced swirling ash that generally seems to literally envelop the viewer. At other times, he indulges too heavily inside format’s in-your-face aspects, thrusting swords and the like directly at us just as if it was still the 1950s. And his propensity for shock cuts—a pop tart erupting coming from a toaster, really?—quickly becomes annoying.
Suffice it to state that the little girl in the original is eighteen and has assumed a brand new identity as Heather (Adelaide Clemens, distractingly looking just like Michelle Williams), living away from home with her father Harry (Sean Bean) from your evil forces from the town of Silent Hill that have claimed her mother (Radha Mitchell). Living with endless nightmares, both waking and dreaming, she returns one day to get her father gone as well as the message “Come to Silent Hill” developed in blood for the wall, forcing her and new high school graduation friend Vincent (Kit Harington) to journey towards the ash-drenched hellscape to rescue him.
Arriving six years—a cinematic eternity—after the 1st adaptation of the popular videogame series, this installment seems very aware that just the most rabid gamers will possibly remember anything from the 2006 original, so writer/director Michael J. Bassett helpfully provides numerous scenes when the characters deliver reams of exposition so your rest of us can attempt to figure just what the hell is happening. It’s a losing proposition.
Reprising their roles from your original, Bean, Mitchell and Deborah Kara Unger prove game regardless of anything else, and Martin Donovan, sporting a very unflattering hat, delivers a vivid turn being an ill-fated private agent. Clemens—who doubles as her character’s evil doppelganger in make-up suggesting she’s just come from a Marilyn Manson concert--effectively delivers a wide array of frightened reactions, although she’s less convincing delivering such lines of dialogue as “How are you able to live like this?”
Cue a continuous series of nightmarish images adapted from the game, featuring a plethora of creatures starting gory, R-rated mayhem, ranging from homicidal nurses to your spider-like figure who turns people into mannequins with a pyramid-headed guy wielding a blade that seems entirely fat for him. Oh, and cameos through the likes with the slumming Carrie-Anne Moss and, most entertainingly, Malcom McDowell, rogues no doubt ruefully recalling that they once dealt with the likes of Stanley Kubrick and Lindsay Anderson.
