  1. Luna Selene Noa (3 May 1992 - 13 August 2017) was an American singer. She was most notably known as the first ever mechanically augmented human. Her augmentations were implemented in 2014, a time when augmentation of any sort was not widely used, and therefore not as well-researched as it is in modern times. Her death, largely attributed to Neuropozyne addiction, is one of the most controversial points in the transhumanism debate and effectively kickstarted the existence of Purity First, a radical anti-augmentation group.

  3. Noa was born on May 3rd, 1992. As she grew up, she was noted for her singing voice, which was said to have magical elements. Scientific research was done to determine any actual supernatural elements to her voice, but no conclusive results were found. She spent her childhood and teen years in her hometown of Burg with her brother and parents before moving to Highland, MI, a suburb of Detroit. At the age of 19, Noa began to lose the feeling in her legs before becoming fully wheelchair-bound by the age of 21. Dissatisfied with her quality of life while handicapped, she volunteered to be used as a test for human augmentation - an emerging science at the time. The controversial decision had to be ruled by the court, but Noa successfully rallied to have a legal mechanical augmentation of her legs, making them function once more.

  5. Due to the nature of mechanical augmentations, a drug known as Neuropozyne is required to prevent the body from rejecting the augmentations and prevent scarring tissue. It is administered weekly and under very restricted access, and is known for its addictive qualities. While using the drug required for her augmentations, Noa became addicted, having severe withdrawal symptoms as time went on. By the last year of her life, she was described as "deranged" and "violent." Her frail appearance and overall weakened state left her spending numerous hours in the hospital and under the care of her family. On August 11, 2017, she contracted pneumonia, and her deteriorated immune system was not able to properly fight it. She died in her sleep on the 13th of the same month.

  7. Noa's death caused a rift between pro and anti-augmentation protestors. Many rallied that the Neuropozyne was an unsafe drug and the addiction killed her, while others protested that it was not the drug but rather botched implementation of the augments that led to her death. David Sarif, head of Sarif Industries, commented that the augmentation process was entirely safe and that the drugs were necessary for her to live with them. Since her passing, mechanical augmentation has been kept under much more strict control and given a lengthy process to complete. Riots have been started by the radical Purity First group, whose formation was a direct result of Noa's death. While mostly kept under control, many have been injured and killed by the group, and the violent protests continue to this day.
