  48. What is the YLOD?!
  49.
  50. The YLOD refers to the Yellow Light of 'Death' that flashes when your PS3 fails to boot up. Instead of going green, it flashes yellow then blinks red. The PS3 will not start and no matter how much you try because there is no connection to the processor any longer. This is only caused by one problem which is illustrated below.
  51.
  52. ==========================================================================================================
  53.
  54. What causes the YLOD?
  55.
  56. The solder joints on the PS3 are lead free. This makes it extremely brittle when it comes to the intense heat that the PS3 creates. The motherboard on the older PS3s also tends to warp causing the already brittle solder joints to break causing a loss of connection to the processor which makes the PS3 not start up.
  57.
  58. Boards CECHA to CECHE have a higher risk of the YLOD due to added processors, wattage, board, processor speed and fan size. These consoles generally have a lower chance of repair due to their age and additional ware. When repaired the retention rate is lower than others unless reballed.
  59.
  60. It is rare for a slim to have a YLOD, generally people mistake the problem with a different one.
  61.
  62. ==========================================================================================================
  63.
  64. Which repair method?
  65.
  66. The best way to completely fix the YLOD for longer than 6+ months is to reball it. This process involves desoldering the RSX chip on the PS3 and replacing the very brittle lead free solder with leaded solder (Or replacing the whole chip if required). This is a lengthy and risky process but the return on investment is well worth it. The PS3 will have an extremely slim chance of failing again with the new/stronger solder which is why I can provide a much longer warranty than the reflows.
  67.
  68. Reballing is a method of repair that consists of removing the graphics chip and replacing the solder joints with leaded solder and then reattaching it. The benefits of this is that the leaded solder (rather than the original lead-free) will be more resilient to heat and thus the console will seldom fail again. Another benefit is that this method can be used for chips that are fried or have damaged ram as the entire chip can be replaced with a fresh one. The downside is that reballing can be problematic as the board itself could get damaged when removing the chip or could already have enough damage that the solder points will no longer function (from being removed, damaged, bridged) resulting in an impossible connection. This means your PS3 is dead - forever. I recommend this for PS3s that constantly get the YLOD or can not be repaired with other methods.
  69.
  70. Hot Air Reflowing (the cheaper option) is simply reheating the solder joints without removing the chip. Seeing as this is a completely blind with only minimal temperature guidance there are no warranties for this repair. Other sellers of PS3 repairs will 98% of the time use a regular hardware store heatgun when conducting this repair. I however, do not - all of my industry specific machinery is illustrated in the advertisement.
  71.
  72. IR Reflowing is when the solder under the chip is heated beyond its melting point via infrared heat with a Professional BGA Reworking Machine. The machine is programmed specifically for the PS3's RSX chip and the temperatures and timing are all adjusted to make the repair process as perfect as possible. As each PS3 is done in the exact same way (which is impossible for the Hot Air Reflow) there is a warranty for this procedure. This is the most popular and most recommended method of repair. For the console not to work after the repair would be the result of a dead chip.

  76. Notes
  77.
  78. A thousand fans won't stop your PS3 from having a YLOD.
  79.
  80. Be sure to let me know if the PS3 you want repaired has already been repaired/opened beforehand as I'm not responsible for any other issues that may occur.
  81.
  82. Don't bring any cables with you please! Unless it's an Xbox repair!
  83.
  84. Your PS3's motherboard ID and the serial on your case will be archived to prevent fraudulent repairs.
  85.
  86. When calling/texting me about organising a date of repair etc please remember! And don't forget to text and confirm on the day with me.
  87.
  88. Warranty includes and is exclusive to a free repair (if possible) or replacement of laser. Warranty is halved on YLOD repairs if the console has been repaired before (I will know, trust me).
  89. By receiving a repair from me you are agreeing that I am not liable in any way for any damages or losses to your console and or parts.
  90.
  91. All information here was written and or gathered by Betterway Electronics.
  92.
  93. Do not be fooled by novice competitors claiming they can fix your PS3 for cheap (with no proof of proper machinery/skill) as well as being able to recover your save games if they fail (it is an impossibility). You get what you pay for!
  94.
  95. I've done a quick lecture on PS3 hardware at QUT (I am shamefully proud of this. Haha).
