  13. This document provides late-breaking or other information that
  14. supplements the documentation in Microsoft Windows XP.

  43. 1.0 ABOUT THE MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP MULTILINGUAL USER INTERFACE PACK (MUI)

  46. The Windows XP operating systems provide extensive support for international
  47. users, addressing many multilingual issues such as regional preferences, fonts,
  48. keyboard layouts, sorting orders, date formats and Unicode support.
  49.  
  50. The Windows XP Multilingual User Interface Pack builds on top of
  51. this support by adding the capability to switch the User Interface (menus,
  52. dialogs and help files) from one language to another. This feature helps make
  53. administration and support of multilingual computing environments much
  54. easier by:
  55.  
  56. * allowing workstations to be shared by users who speak different
  57. languages
  58.  
  59. * facilitating the roll-out of one system company-wide, with the
  60. addition of User Interface languages as they become available.
  61. This allows the same US English service pack to update all machines.
  62.  
  63. The Windows XP Multilingual User Interface Pack allows
  64. each user of a workstation to select one of the installed User Interface
  65. languages. This selection is then stored in their user profile. When a
  66. user logs on, the appearance of the system and the help files associated
  67. with the system components change to the selected language. (Note that
  68. this is not quite the same as running a localized version. The Multilingual
  69. User Interface Pack is based on the English version of Windows XP. )
  70.  
  71. The ability to read and write documents in each of the languages
  72. supported by Windows XP is a feature of every version of Windows
  73. XP, not just of the Windows XP Multilingual User
  74. Interface Pack. However, the ability to switch User Interface languages
  75. is only provided by the Windows Multilingual User Interface Pack.

  79. 2.0 BEFORE INSTALLING MUI SUPPORT FROM MUI CDs
  80. =========================================================================

  82. Before you install any of the files from the Windows Multilingual User
  83. Interface Pack CDs, you must complete the installation of Windows
  84. XP from the English version of Windows XP CD.
  85.  
  86. To install any language user interface support, run MUISETUP.EXE from the
  87. MUI CDs. Each MUI CD includes a group of different MUI language support
  88. files. You will only be able to install the languages that are included
  89. on the same CD at one time. If you want to install languages included
  90. on another CD, please run the MUISETUP from that CD. You can click the
  91. "Help" button on the MUISETUP.EXE screen to learn how to use MUISETUP.EXE.

  93. To find out which CD includes which UI language files, you can browse the
  94. CD to see which sub-folders are included on the CD. Each sub-folder includes
  95. the MUI package for a particular matching UI language. The UI languages and
  96. their sub-folder names are listed below:

  133. Please note this list is just for reference purpose. It does not mean
  134. all these languages will be supported in the XP MUI pack. Due to the
  135. localization schedule differences among languages,
  136. the XP MUI package will be released in two releases. The initial release
  137. will include languages that are done soonest after the US English
  138. release. The refresh release will include the other supported languages done

  140. for more detail on the supported language list in XP MUI pack and their
  141. release schedules.

  144. 3.0 SUPPORTED PLATFORMS
  145. =========================================================================
  146. The Windows XP MUI pack only works with Windows XP Professional Edition.
  147. The MUI files cannot be installed on Windows XP Home Edition.
  148.  
  149. A 32-bit MUI pack can only be installed on 32-bit Windows XP. You must use
  150. a 64-bit MUI pack on 64-bit Windows XP. The number of supported MUI languages
  151. on 64-bit will be different from 32-bit XP.

  154. 4.0 UPGRADING TO THE WINDOWS XP MUI PACK FROM WINDOWS 2000 MULTILANGUAGE VERSION
  155. =========================================================================

  157. Setup will remove the old Windows 2000 MultiLanguage support files but will
  158. not automatically add the Windows XP MUI support files during the upgrade
  159. process. You must install the Windows XP MUI files from MUI CDs just as you
  160. would on a clean installation of Windows XP. The same applies when upgrading
  161. from early test versions of Windows XP MUI.
  162.  
  163. We recommend that you set the UI language to English before upgrading the
  164. Windows 2000 MUI system to Windows XP.
  165.  
  166.  
  167. You can use the following unattend mode process to add the new MUI files
  168. automatically during the upgrade process.

  171. 5.0 INSTALLING MUI PACK IN UNATTEND MODE
  172. =========================================================================
  173.  
  174. The following steps explain how to install the Windows MUI Pack in unattend mode.
  175.  
  176. 1. Copy all the MUI files from MUI CDs into a temporary directory on a
  177. network share, such as $OEM$\MUIINST.
  178.  
  179. In this example, we use a server \\MUICORE. The directory for the MUI CD
  180. contents will be \\MUICORE\UNATTEND\$OEM$\MUIINST.
  181.  
  182. 2. Add a "Cmdlines.txt" file in \\muicore\UNATTEND\$OEM$ that includes
  183. the following lines:
  184.  
  185. [Commands]
  186. "muiinst\muisetup.exe [/i LangID1 LangID2 ...] [/d LangID] /r /s"
  187.  
  188. Note that you must specify " " in your cmdlines.txt file. Use the
  189. appropriate Language ID (LANGID)s, and the muisetup command line
  190. parameters to ensure a quiet installation. Please check muisetup.hlp
  191. for a complete description of all the command line parameters for
  192. muisetup.exe (the command line help content is under "related topics"
  193. in the help.).
  194.  
  195. 3. Create an answer file (mui.txt):
  196.  
  197. a. add the following entries in the "Unattended" section
  198.  
  199. [Unattended]
  200. OemPreinstall=Yes
  201. OemFilesPath=\\muicore\unattend
  202. OemSkipEula=YES
  203.  
  204. "OemFilesPath" must point to a network share or drive containing the
  205. MUI install source stored in the above directory structure.
  206.  
  207. The Windows install sources can be anywhere else (CD, network share, etc).
  208.  
  209. b. add a "RegionalSettings" section. Use this section to specify the Language
  210. Groups and locales to install. Use the appropriate Language Group IDs and
  211. Locale IDs (LCIDs). Ensure that the Language Groups you install are sufficient
  212. to cover BOTH the locale settings and the User Interface languages you
  213. are installing.

  220. Of course, the answer file may also include other OS unattended setup options.
  221.  
  222. 4. Run winnt32.exe with the appropriate options to use the answer file. If you
  223. require the installation of East Asian language and locale support, you must
  224. specify /copysource:lang or /rx:lang to copy the necessary language files.
  225. If you do not, and the [RegionalSettings] section of your answer file contains
  226. East Asian values, Setup will ignore everything in the [RegionalSettings] section.
  227.  
  228. For Winnt32.exe, the appropriate syntax is:
  229. winnt32.exe /unattend:"path to answer file" /copysource:lang /s:"path to install source"

  233. 6.0 DEPLOYING MUI BY USING REMOTE INSTALLATION SERVICE
  234. =========================================================================
  235. The following steps explain how to deploy MUI by using Windows Server��s Remote
  236. Installation Service (RIS). ( RIS requirements: Domain Controller running Active
  237. Directory, DHCP server, DNS server, NTFS partition to hold OS images. )
  238.  
  239. 1. Install Remote Installation Services using the Windows Component Wizard.
  240. 2. Run Risetup.exe. RIS will create a flat image from the CD or network share as follows:
  241. \Remote installation share\Admin
  242. \OSChooser
  243. \Setup
  244. \tmp
  245.  
  246. The image is kept in the I386 directory under
  247. \Setup (such as \Setup\<OS Locale>\Images\<Directory name>\I386 ).

  249. 3. Follow instructions on KB: Q241063 to install additional languages.
  250. 4. Follow instructions on KB: Q287545 or manually copy asms directory form CD
  251. or network share into the I386 directory of the image.
  252.  
  253. 5. Add the following section into the ristndrd.sif
  254. (under \Setup\<OS Locale>\Images\<Directory Name>\I386\Templates) to enable
  255. OEM installation
  256.

  267. 6. Add $OEM$ directory at the same level as the \I386 image directory that contains
  268. the following installation source
  269. \Setup\<OS Locale>\Images\<Directory Name>

  275. In ��cmdlines.txt��, you will need the following structure to start installation of
  276. MUI. The MUIINST folder will include MUI files copied from MUI CD root folder.
