  24.
  25. Also included quite a lot of songs written specifically for the movies which later became popular hits.
  26. Also also, even though Western music was frowned upon(sometimes even banned), the “approved” composers could write whatever they wanted. So one could find everything from twist to fusion to progressive rock to electronica to everything.

  56.
  57. Jazz actually appeared in the USSR in 1920s, at about the same time as in the USA. Then during 30s it was criticized as “too Western” and even banned for some time, then allowed again but still criticized.

  104.
  105. [[The VIA ]]
  106.
  107. No, not the motherboard manufacturer. The Vocal and Instrumental Ensemble, a fancy Soviet name for a pop band. In this case it also meant an “approved” band (same as “approved” composers above), which also meant playing more Western or West-influenced music.

  127.
  128. [[the Bards]]
  129.
  130. The singer-songwriters who perform their own songs, usually with a guitar accompaniment. This usually meant that lyrics was more important than the music quality and the songs could be performed by anyone with some reeeally basic guitar skills.
  131. Were mostly apolitical and thus weren’t persecuted despite being semi-underground.

  149. [[The Soviet/Russian Rock]]
  150.
  151. The funny thing about the Soviet(and later Russian) rock is that it mostly descended from the aforementioned bards (basically some bards bought electric guitars and amps. It’s only a half-joke). Unlike the bards, though, these guys WERE persecuted by the authorities, though not all that much (I don’t remember anyone who was put in jail for that). Also many rockers were inspired and influenced by bootleg Western records and it shows.
  152. Another funny thing is the definition of what belongs to Russian rock and what doesn’t. Basically the only thing that unified them was that they all were equally underground (not everyone was even all that protesting). Basically it’s Russian rock if the fans say so.
  153. So Viktor Tsoi and his Kino band (post-punk, new wave and occasionally reggae), Picnic (avant-garde, psychedelic rock, gothic rock), Boris Grebenshchikov (who played… you know, the only genre he didn’t play was probably dubstep), Nol’ (who played … probably… folk-rock), Bamboo Drumming at 11AM(ambient/trip-hop) and many others are all Russian rock.
  154.
  155. Only links to people who started in USSR here, the others are in Notable musicians below
  156.
  157. Аквариум(Aquarium)
  158. Boris Grebenshchikov and… uhh… some other people. He’s the only constant member throughout the band’s history. Played in many many genres, with rather non-trivial lyrics (the closest Western equivalent probably will be Modest Mouse). Active since 1970s up until 2010, made a boatload of songs for literally everyone.
