- 1) Utility software is an important part of any computer system.

- b. Explain how defragmentation works and why it is done by utility software.
- Defragmentation sorts the hard drive to get rid of gaps from the user deleting files.
- 2) All computers need an operating system installed in order to function correctly.
- a. What is the purpose of the OS?
- The OS is the mainframe from which all programs run off, it is vital, and without it, there would only be the BIOS.
- b. Describe multi-tasking.
- Multi-tasking is when the computer does several things at once. To do so, it needs a dual + core processor.
- 3) Ben is expanding his mail-order company and is thinking about buying new software to help him.
- a. What is custom built software?
- Custom built software is software which has been built especially for a specific customer, as opposed to the general public.
- b. State two advantages for Ben to use custom built software.
- Custom built software will greater benefit his needs, since it is tailored to suit him.
- c. Ben thinks off the shelf software would be better for him. Discuss this.
- Off the shelf software is a lot cheaper, since it is made in bulk, although it may not be as feature-full

- a. What is open source software?
- Open source software is software which has a public source code, so that anyone can use and implement it into their own software.
- b. What is proprietary software?
- Proprietary software is software which is owned privately by a single person/company.
- c. What are the advantages for Microsoft of releasing their code as open source?
- The advantages are that people can use the code to create their own programs, using features from Microsoft.
- d. What are the disadvantages for Microsoft of releasing their code as open source?
- Anyone can copy their program and sell it for themselves.
- 1. Kevin needs to make a backup of his photography portfolio. He also needs to be able to send copies of his work to potential clients.
- a) Explain why keeping a backup is important.
- Keeping backups can be very important, since certain data can be a huge pain to lose, for example important company documents. With backups, you can easily retrieve any data lost from a main HDD.
