- BACKGROUND: In the game of Daggerfall, items can be enchanted with the Repair
- Objects enchantment which will cause them to automatically repair damaged items
- in the character's inventory. The repairs happen automatically, raising the
- item's quality by one level every 8 hours, and affects equipped items (e.g.
- worn armor and wielded weapons) first.
- HYPOTHESIS: Multiple items with the Repair Objects enchantment will cause
- damaged items in the inventory to repair faster.
- METHOD: Reviewer opened a save file and backed it up. Using the DAGHEX save
- file editor, items in the subject's inventory were altered to cause them to
- become damaged, with equipped items enchanted with the "Repair Objects"
- enchantment to cause them to be magically repaired. Reviewer then allowed the
- game to run, stopping every one minute of real-world time (margin of error
- of roughly 10 milliseconds) to check on the items being worn and make note of
- visible changes to their quality. Because equipped items are repaired first
- and foremost, only equipped items will be altered for the purposes of this
- test.
- SUBJECT: Subject is an Argonian Assassin wielding an Elven Mace and an Ebony
- Dagger with a full set of Leather armor, with 89 total miscellaneous items in
- inventory including worn weapons and armor. Subject has no knowledge of magic;
- however, the reviewer does not expect that this will have any impact on their
- ability to use enchanted items. Reviewer notes that the subject is wielding
- the dagger in the left hand and the mace in the right, and has the right-hand
- weapon readied for use. Subject has expressed displeasure at what he regards
- as a frivolous waste of time but agreed to cooperate when offered lager.
- TEST 1: All worn armor quality set to 1 (broken); ebony dagger set to Mag
- Item 1 Ench, enchantment "Repairs Objects," and identified (DAGHEX's utility
- offers a convenient one-button command to identify all items in the inventory)
- In-game start time: 1535
- First stop at 1546
- No visible change; all armor items still display "Broken" when examined
- Second stop at 1558
- No visible change
- Third stop at 1610
- No visible change
- Fourth stop at 1622
- No visible change. It is noted by the reviewer that one minute of real-world
- time equates roughly to 12 minutes of in-game time.
- Fifth stop at 1634
- No visible change. Game saved in a separate slot to check on item quality in
- DAGHEX. Test halted.
- RESULTS: Leather Greaves have been increased from 1 to 5 in quality, out of a
- maximum of 3072.
- No effect on other armor items in the inventory. This suggests that the items
- were not increased automatically by the game prior to beginning the test for
- any reason.
- CONCLUSION: Under normal conditions, the dagger while enchanted with the Repair
- Objects perk will increase a set of Leather Greaves from quality value 1 to 5
- in five real-world minutes or 48 minutes of in-game time. The enchantment only
- affects one item at a time, which is consistent with expectations. Reviewer
- notes that despite the enchantment's description on the UESP wiki, the game
- does not require the character to be resting for the enchantment to work.
- TEST 2: Original save files restored. All worn armor quality set to 1
- (broken); ebony dagger set to Mag Item 1 Ench, enchantment "Repairs Objects,"
- and identified; elven mace set to Mag Item 1 Ench, enchantment "Repairs
- Objects," and identified
- Reviewer notes that both weapons appear to be held in the left hand on the
- inventory screen. This is likely an error caused by the save file being edited
- with a hex editor. Switching weapons confirms that in actuality the mace is
- still in the right hand as in Test 1.
- In-game start time: 1535
- First stop at 1547
- Reviewer notes that time discrepancy is likely caused by pausing to check
- the weapon hands at the beginning of the test. Expects this will have minimal,
- if any, impact on test results.
- No visible change; all armor items still display "Broken" when examined
- Second stop at 1558
- No visible change
- Third stop at 1611
- No visible change
- Fourth stop at 1623
- No visible change
- Fifth stop at 1634
- No visible change. Game saved in a separate slot to check on item quality in
- DAGHEX. Test halted.
- RESULTS: Leather Greaves have been increased from 1 to 18 in quality, out of a
- maximum of 3072
- No effect on other armor items in the inventory.
- CONCLUSION: Multiple Repair Objects enchantments appear to still only affect
- one item at a time; however, the effect appears to be significantly faster.
- Reviewer hypothesizes the discrepancy is caused either by the game increasing
- magnitude based on enchantments, or based on the material of the item which has
- been enchanted.
- TEST 3: Original save file restored. All worn armor item quality set to 1;
- All equipped armor and weapon items enchanted with Repair Objects enchantment.
- Reviewer makes note that the MAGICREPAIR option has been set to ensure that
- items will be repaired regardless of their enchantment.
- Unlike Test 1 and Test 2, this test will run for five minutes uninterrupted and
- will be halted immediately after the five minutes have elapsed.
- In-game start time: 1535
- Test paused at 20 real-world seconds, in-game time 1539
- Game has reported that Subject's Left Pauldron and Cuirass are broken.
- Inventory is checked and these two items have disappeared. Test resumes.
- Test paused at 1 real-world minute and 16 seconds, in-game time 15:50
- Subject's Helm and Right Pauldron are broken. Reviewer notes this is because
- the items' enchantments are causing the items to degrade as they attempt to
- repair the subject's Greaves.
- Reviewer further notes that the items appear to be working in pairs, as they
- are being broken in pairs.
- Reviewer notes subject looks sexy without a shirt on. Subject expresses
- flattery.
- Game saved into separate slot to be checked in DAGHEX. Test halted.
- RESULTS: Leather Greaves have been increased in quality from 1 to 20, a marked
- change in speed resulting from the multitude of items attempting to repair it.
- However, four items have been broken due to the extreme conditions of the test.
- CONCLUSION: Using multiple objects with the Repairs Objects enchantment shows
- a marked improvement in the speed of the repair. However, the reviewer notes
- that the character is likely to lose items if they are used for this purpose
- while in poor condition. The reason why the items kept breaking in pairs is
- unknown and appears to be simply a result of how the game keeps track of item
- damage. Because the player can not select which item is to be enchanted, they
- are advised that the MAGICREPAIR option does not guarantee that they will not
- lose items, especially if they are being used for the repairs. Caution is
- recommended when repairing items, especially in dungeons or other situations
- where the player is likely to enter combat.
