  1. >A few candles, flickering on the desk, keep the lonely darkness at bay.
  2. >The soft orange light presses against their surroundings, gently illuminating the tome in front of you.
  3. >You read over the script in the book carefully.
  4. >Studiously.
  5. >Over and over.
  6. >You close your eyes and exhale.
  7. >You shift your vision to your miscellaneous gear and objects in the corner of your room.
  8. >You focus on your blade.
  9. >Reaching out your hand, you flex your muscles and strain your mind.
  10. Volito…
  11. >You mutter softly under your breath.
  12. >The sword in its sheathe twitches slightly, noticeably trying to lift off the ground.
  13. >You tighten your focus.
  14. >But the blade doesn’t budge, and only tips over onto the ground with a clank.
  15. >You sigh, and shake your head.
  16. >…don’t get too discouraged, Anonymous.
  17. >Levitation is a high level spell.
  18. >You probably aren’t ready for it.
  19. >Especially when you’re still saying the spells out loud.
  20. >You lean back in your chair and gaze out the window.
  21. >Such a beautiful, star-lit Canterlot night.
  22. >Princess Luna has really outdone herself.
  23. >You’ll have to compliment her the next time you see her.
  24. >But for now, more studying…
  25.
  26. >The night drags on, and you’ve engrossed yourself in your studies.
  27. >Your technique is what requires the most help.
  28. >Unlike these unicorns, you don’t have a horn to easily channel spells from.
  29. >You need to conjure from or by your hand.
  30. >…must be in the flick of the wrist or something.
  31. >You’ve got some spells down.
  32. >Combat, of course, which is what you’re training for.
  33. >But those tend to be easier.
  34. >You have a knack for them, they say.
  35. >It’s these other ones, like levitation, that seem to be trickier.
  36. >Why are the ones more practical to your training easier to learn, you wonder?
  37. >…well you won’t stop there. You want to be proficient in all magic.
  38. >No matter how long it takes.
  39. >After a few moments of silence, the heavy wooden door of your room groans and creaks open.
  40. >You alert your head in the direction.
  41. >The silhouette of a p0ny emerges.
  42. >It’s impossible to make every detail out due to this darkness.
  43. >But you can see a tall wizard hat resting on its head above its horn, and a long beard draping down below it.
  44. M-Master…
  45. >You sputter, closing your tome gently.
  46. It’s late… what are you doing here?
  47. >A worn laugh echoes through your chamber.
  48. >”Yes, boy… it is rather late.”
  49. >His voice drags on; groggy, and old, yet commanding a sort of strength to it.
  50. >”But I’m afraid this matter cannot wait much longer. I figured it would be best to tell you now.”
  51. >He closes the door behind him and steps toward your desk.
  52. >The soft light of the candles illuminates his face.
  53. >He’s an old, grey p0ny, with a patterned wizard hat resting on his head, and a simple cloak draped over his body.
  54. >His tangled, white beard dangles wisely from his chin.
  55. >Rumor around the castle is that this p0ny here, Master Spellweave, is a descendant from Starswirl the Bearded himself. Or, a student, or student’s student, or student’s student’s student. You’re not sure.
  56. Of course, Master. Anything I can do?
  57. >He laughs softly, and gazes upon the tome on your desk.
  58. >”Studying in your free time, eh boy?”
  59. >You scratch the back of your head and laugh a little.
  60. >He smiles. “…ah, more ‘practical’ spells, is that it? Opening doors, levitation, that sort of thing?”
  61. >You smile a little.
  62. I… I’d just like to be able to perform some of the same spells you p0nies do…
  63. >”Nonsense…” he says with a smile, “your proficiency in combat magic makes you far more valuable than we are… but… “ he continues, flipping open the book and scanning a few lines, “if you wish to study these spells in your free time, I won’t be stopping you…”
  64. Th-Thank you, Master.
  65. >He smiles and nods at you.
  66. So, Master… may I be of service?
  67. >He nods once again.
  68. >”Yes, Anonymous, yes. I’ve come to inform you about a… new studying opportunity we here wish to give you.”
  69. >Your heart skips a little.
  70. A new… studying opportunity?
  71. >”Indeed… indeed…”
  72. >The worn grey p0ny begins pacing the room.
  73. >”You’re progressing at a fantastic rate… a rate far more than I’ve expected, my boy. Too fast, perhaps, for even myself to keep up…”
  74. >You laugh a quick, breathy laugh.
  75. Master, I doubt that I would ever be proficient enough to out-do you.
  76. >He turns and smiles.
  77. >”Perhaps, lad… but regardless, your skill is improving dramatically, and I think it would be a fantastic opportunity to snag and hone this improvement while we can…”
  78. >You nod your head.
  79. >”Princess Celestia agrees… one of her students, a Miss Twilight Sparkle, lives in P0nyville, not very far from here at all…”
  80. Twilight Sparkle…?
  81. >”Name familiar, boy?”
  82. >You can’t place it… but yes, it is rather familiar…
  83. >You nod your head.
  84. >He smiles.
  85. >”I figured it would be… she’s a powerful, powerful unicorn, with a vast knowledge of a variety of spells… she’s even saved the kingdom quite a few times before you came along.”
  86. >Master Spellweave levitates the book from your desk and slips it neatly into the bookshelf behind you.
  87. >”We think it would be best if you journey to P0nyville and study under Miss Sparkle. She would be a fantastic teacher and mentor to you, Anonymous, and I don’t doubt your magical capabilities would increase exponentially under her guidance.”
  88. >You nod your head once more
  89. I understand, Master.
  90. >Incredible… studying under a unicorn perhaps even stronger than Master Spellweave…
  91. When will I be departing?
  92. >”Tomorrow afternoon,” he states.
  93. >…rather soon and sudden.
  94. >But… the earlier the better, you suppose.
  95. >”Attend your blade training with Shining Armor tomorrow, and let him know after about the news. I’m sure he will be… pleased.”
  96. >Sir Shining Armor would be pleased?
  97. >Why would your mentor of blade training take an interest to your magic instruction?
  98. Understood, Master.
  99. >”Good, good…” he drones, “in which case, I shall retire for the night. I recommend you do the same, Anonymous.”
  100. Yes, Master.
  101. >”Goodnight.”
  102. Goodnight.
  103.
  104. >”Anonymous, sir,” a voice calls from your door.
  105. >You creak your eyes open.
  106. >Soft morning light bleeds in from the window.
  107. >A maid p0ny stands at your threshold.
  108. >”It’s time for your combat training. Shining Armor will be waiting in the courtyard.”
  109. >You sit up in bed and nod.
  110. Yes, thank you, ma’am.
  111. >She smiles and closes the door behind her.
  112. >You give a mighty stretch, then slip out of bed.
  113. >You get dressed, first putting on your white, slightly baggy leggings and leather boots.
  114. >Next, you don your thick blue tunic, lightly armored by matching blue leather.
  115. >Princess Luna’s suggestion. Apparently, it brings out your eyes.
  116. >Finally, you fasten your red cape to yourself.
  117. >You snag your sheathed blade and secure it to your leather belt, then depart from your room toward the courtyard.
  118. >The walk is a brisk and quick one that you’ve made many times.
  119. >You bid many of the castle residents a “good morning” as you pass them.
  120. >Eventually, you reach the courtyard, where an armored Shining Armor waits alone.
  121. >You’ve been getting lessons personally.
  122. >As he sees you coming, he smiles.
  123. >You approach the unicorn and kneel down before him.
  124. Greetings, Sir Shining Armor.
  125. >He laughs.
  126. >”Get up, Anonymous,” he says with a smirk.
  127. >You smile, and rise.
  128. >Apparently, kneeling before your superiors or masters isn’t required here, or at least, not often desired.
  129. >But it’s a habit that’s stuck.
  130. >”Alright, well now that you’re finally here, shall we begin?” He asks, coating his blade in his magical aura and drawing it.
  131. >You grip your hilt and draw your own.
  132. Gladly.
  133. >The hours of practice fly by in what seems like minutes.
  134. >Combat is so different here in Equestria.
  135. >The blade can be almost anywhere, at any time, due to this levitation magic the unicorns use.
  136. >But apparently, you do a fantastic job putting up a fight using “a limb for sword combat,” as they like to jokingly and wondrously say.
  137. >What’s abnormal to you is the standard for them, and vice versa.
  138. >It’s quite interesting.
  139. >Shining Armor sheathes his sword, panting a little, and laughs.
  140. >”You’re improving quite a bit, aren’t you, Anonymous?”
  141. >You laugh a little.
  142. If so, only because I have such a magnificent instructor.
  143. >You say with a smile.
  144. >He punches your shoulder with his hoof softly.
  145. >”Oh stop it you!~” he says in a jokingly feminine voice, “you must really get the ladies with that charm, huh?”
  146. >You just smile a little bashfully.
  147. >Perhaps you would… if they weren’t all mares…
  148. >…regardless, even if they weren’t, you’re a mage warrior in training, you don’t have time for things such as romance.
  149. >”Anyway,” says Shining Armor, breaking your train of thought, “the old bearded magician said you have news for me. Care to share?”
  150. >Your mind snaps to attention.
  151. Ah! Yes, I do.
  152. >You sheathe your own trusty blade.
  153. It appears I’ll be studying… abroad for a while. Princess Celestia and Master Spellweave apparently believe I’m improving quickly enough to train under a great unicorn. I depart this afternoon.
  154. >Shining Armor nods his head with an air of seriousness.
  155. >”The old coot should’ve given me a heads-up… well, just don’t neglect your sword training.”
  156. Never.
  157. >You say with a smile.
  158. >The seriousness dissipates, and he smiles too.
  159. >”So where and who are you training under?” He asks, as you two begin to walk back into the castle.
  160. If I recall correctly… P0nyville, under a Miss… Twilight Sparkle.
  161. >His eyes widen, and a huge grin broadens across his face.
  162. >He lets out a deep laugh.
  163. >”Oh ho ho ho! Twily?! Really!?”
  164. >He continues his laugh.
  165. >You raise your eyebrow at him and smile.
  166. “Twily?”
  167. >He wraps a hoof around your neck (having to stand to do so) and wipes a tear from his eye.
  168. >”Oh, WOW! That’s incredible!”
  169. So I take it you know my future mentor?
  170. >He drops back down on all fours and nods.
  171. >”Yeah, you can say that. You’ll only be studying under my little sister.”
  172. >Your heart skips a little in your chest.
  173. What!?
  174. >You clap your hand over your mouth.
  175. >That was rude…
  176. >He sees this, and laughs.
  177. >You clear your throat.
  178. I-I mean… your little sister is one of the most powerful unicorns in all of Equestria?
  179. >He laughs and nods.
  180. >”And a hero, too. You should consider yourself lucky, Anonymous! Studying under the great Shining Armor AND his sister!” He says with sarcastic narcissism.
  181. >You laugh.
  182. >Wow, Sir Shining Armor’s sister, huh? If she’s proficient in magic anything like he’s proficient in swordplay… wow, what an honor!
  183. >You reach the corridor where Shining Armor and yourself usually part.
  184. >”Well,” he says, holding out his hoof, “good luck out there, brother. Say hi for me, and remember: I’ll be checking up on you, so keep practicing!”
  185. >He gives a wink.
  186. >You laugh, and grasp his hoof in a Roman handshake-esque manner.
  187. Thank you, Sir.
  188. >He releases his grip and joking scoffs, shaking his head.
  189. >”Sir… psh,” he says, laughing and shaking his head as he traverses down the corridor.
  190. >You turn and begin walking your own way.
  191. >Better pack your things quickly.
  192. >It’s only a couple hours until you depart.
  193. >You wonder if she has her own spell books?
  194. >Where will you be sleeping?
  195. >Oh, this is so sudden, you’ve hardly planned anything!
  196. >…relax, Anonymous. Master Spellweave and the Princess know what they’re doing, you’re sure they have everything planned out.
  197. >You laugh again.
  198. >…what an experience…
  199.
  200. >You enter the golden chariot, donned in your outfit from before, and a simple rucksack with standard belongings in them.
  201. >Master Spellweave and Princess Celestia are there to see you off.
  202. >Shining Armor, as the captain of the royal guard, had other plans, but you’ve already said your goodbyes.
  203. >Two royal pegasi approach the front of the chariot, attach themselves, and begin to take off.
  204. >You wave goodbye to your Princess and teacher.
  205. >”Remember boy!” Spellweave calls out, “send letters with your progress! I’m sure Miss Sparkle knows much about the process!”
  206. I will!
  207. >You call back with a smile.
  208. >And with that, the chariot takes to the sky.
  209. >The two guards gallop higher into the air, as the castle, and soon all of Canterlot, grows farther and farther away, shrinking into the distance.
  210. >You turn your head away from it, close your eyes, and take a deep breath of the fresh, high air.
  211. >P0nyville… you wonder what it’s like…
  212. >About an hour passes, and you begin flying over a thick forest looking area.
  213. >”The town’s not much further, Anonymous!” One of the guards calls out to you, “We’ll take it a little lower over the trees here for a smoother landing.”
  214. >You nod to the guard.
  215. Yes, that sounds good. Thank you, gentlemen.
  216. >The guard turns back to his duty.
  217. >You peek over the side of the chariot, looking down to the dark forest below.
  218. >It’s beautiful, in a deep, twisted sort of way.
  219. >You wonder what kind of things dwell in it.
  220. >You smile to yourself, then bring your head back up, looking straight ahead
  221. >…
  222. >You snap your palms to the side of the chariot and dart your head over, looking around below.
  223. >Did you just hear a…?
  224. >”Anonymous!” A guard calls, “Is there something wrong?”
  225. >…
  226. >There it is again!
  227. Yes! Guards, can you land in the forest here?!
  228. >They look to each other in confusion.
  229. >”I suppose, but—“
  230. Please, gentlemen, we must land with haste!
  231. >They nod, and you briskly drop through the treetops below.
  232. >Everything gets quite a bit darker under here.
  233. >The guards descend slowly and land, quite gracefully all things considered, onto the forest ground below.
  234. >You leap out of the chariot quickly and listen intently.
  235. >…
  236. >…
  237. There!
  238. >You bolt out in a direction, holding your sheathed blade.
  239. >”Anonymous, where are you going?” The guards call out.
  240. >No time!
  241. >That’s three times already you’ve heard it.
  242. >A scream.
  243. >A young scream.
  244. >If you weren’t mistaken… a child is in danger.
  245. >You dart through the thick trees swiftly and acrobatically.
  246. >The scream is heard once more.
  247. >It’s close.
  248. >Eventually, you launch out into a clearing from the trees.
  249. >Your eyes lock to three fillies cowering in fear.
  250. >An orange one, white one, and yellow one.
  251. >Three children!?
  252. >Your eyes quickly shift to their assaulter.
  253. >A huge, monstrous looking creature stands before them.
  254. >It has canine-esque qualities, with a long, toothy snout, paws, four legs, the entire structure reminds you of a vicious dog or wolf.
  255. >But… it appears to be made out of wood.
  256. >…what enchantment is this?
  257. >No time!
  258. >You dart quickly over to them, and slide in between the three shivering children and the monster.
  259. Halt, foul beast!
  260. >You yell, as you draw your blade before you.
  261. >The three fillies take notice to your protection.
  262. >”Wh-Who are you!?” one of them bellows.
  263. >You whip out your hand behind you, eyes still on the monster.
  264. Quickly, get away from here!
  265. >The monster roars at you.
  266. >Its breath is most foul.
  267. >You back up a little bit.
  268. >Made from wood.
  269. >Okay, so the best spell would be—
  270. >The wolf monster swings its paw down mightily at you.
  271. >Shoot!
  272. >You clasp both hands around your blade’s hilt and brace.
  273. >The paw connects with your weapon, and you struggle against his might with your own strength.
  274. >”Mister, are you okay!?” another child calls from you.
  275. >What are they still doing here!?
  276. Ch-Children!
  277. >You call, trying desperately to overpower this foe.
  278. I told you t-to flee!
  279. >You give one mighty push upward, temporarily overpowering the beast and flinging its paw up away.
  280. >It's taken off balance slightly.
  281. >You pick up your foot, and with a mighty Spartan kick, slam your boot down into its chest area.
  282. >You can hear a few snaps, perhaps some twigs or sticks assembling it?
  283. >You follow up with a quick slash to its opposite arm, slicing through and snapping the wood close to its shoulder.
  284. >The beast reels back in pain.
  285. >Good, Anonymous! Now, follow once more with—
  286. >It brings his other paw down with much force.
  287. >You dive and roll out of the way, its hit connecting to the ground with a great thud.
  288. >Shoot! Your mind is almost a scramble! Actual combat makes it so hard to focus and cast spells!
  289. >You try your hardest to remember.
  290. >The canine lifts its paw back up and swings it horizontally at you.
  291. >You duck the horizontal hit and weave away from a vertical one.
  292. >Come on, Anonymous…!
  293. >…aha!
  294. >You dive and dodge one more swing.
  295. >Rolling on the ground, you prop yourself up on one knee, extend your open palm, and shout:
  296. IGNIS!
  297. >A warm power rapidly forms in your chest, then barrels down your arm and to your palm with great speed.
  298. >A rather large and speedy fireball careens from your hand, thrusting directly into the wooden creature.
  299. >Instantly, it ignites on fire, and begins writhing and wailing as it burns.
  300. >The wood begins to turn to ash. The bright, green light in its eyes begin to dim, and the creature collapses to the ground, not moving.
  301. >The beast is felled.
  302. >You stand up and breathe heavily, trying to catch your breath, and give a pleasurable exhale.
  303. >You sheathe your blade, the metal sliding and scraping down the holster until it satisfyingly clicks and locks into place.
  304. >Your cape gently waves and flaps in the soft breeze.
  305. >Your first real combat experience in this land…
  306. >”…WOOOOW!” you hear from behind the burning lump.
  307. >It grabs your attention, and you briskly stride around to see the three fillies admiring your kill.
  308. >They take notice to you almost instantly and bolt over.
  309. >”That was AMAZING!” The orange one bellows.
  310. >”Ah thought we were gonners fer sure! But you really saved out hides!” The yellow one adds in.
  311. >”Thanks for saving us, mister! Are you some kind of brave knight!?” The white one asks.
  312. >Their big eyes look up to you with wonder and fascination.
  313. >You laugh a little.
  314. Not a knight quite yet.
  315. >The orange one scoffs.
  316. >”Yeah, sure! Only an AWESOME knight could take on a timberwolf like that!”
  317. >”Do you have a name, Sir Knight?” The white one cutely inquires.
  318. >You place your hand to your forehead and laugh a little.
  319. You may call me Anonymous, dear children,
  320. >You say, giving a formal bow.
  321. at your service.
  322. >They all giggle and dance on the tips of their hooves.
  323. >”Okay, Sir Knight Anonymous!” The yellow one cries. “We’re gonna go tell EVERYP0NY about you!”
  324. >They turn around and begin running.
  325. Wait, children!
  326. >You call, extending your hand.
  327. It could still be dangerous!
  328. >”Nah, we know the way from here!” The orange one calls. “See you around!”
  329. >You stay for a moment, before dropping your hand and laughing, shaking your head.
  330. >If they’re heading for town, perhaps you should follow them.
  331. >”Anonymous!” You hear from your left.
  332. >You turn, catching the eyes of the two pegasi guards who have just passed through the trees.
  333. >”Is everything alright?” One asks, his eyes slightly glancing at the large bonfire not too far from you.
  334. >You smile and nod.
  335. Everything is grand, gentlemen.
  336. >They look to each other, then to you.
  337. >”Splendid. Shall we then return to our flight to P0nyville?”
  338. >You shake your head.
  339. No thank you, sirs. You may return back to Canterlot, I think I’ll walk from here.
  340. >”…understood, Anonymous. Good luck with everything.”
  341. >You nod.
  342. Thank you.
  343. >The two guards turn around and head back through the trees.
  344. >You turn your attention down the path the fillies ran down and begin taking large steps.
  345. >Hand on your blade, breathing in the fresh forest air, you head toward P0nyville.
  346. >Toward the new chapter in your life and studies.
  347.
