  57. The two person unit Oyasumi Hologram, consisting of members Kanamiru and Hachigatsuchan, released a new album after half a year had passed from their previous release.
  58.
  59. Indie Rock Scenes celebrated musicians such as Kikui Maho (Homme, former uminote member), Kobayashi Junet (the DHOLE), Takaishi Koutarou, Yoshijimo Motohito and Ueno Sho (kedama, Hakoniwa no Shitsunaigaku) took part in creating
  60. this new style work that sets a flame in the idol scene with it's polished alternative rock sound and good melodies. It's also released IN GLORIOUS HI RESOLUTION FLAC.
  61. We had the chance to interview the two members and their producer Ogawa. What do they see beyond the fusion of idol and alternative rock.
  62.
  63. --
  64.
  65. Oyasumi Holograms previous released isn't even half a year old and they released their 2nd album. Taking a complete turn from their first album, which was reminiscent of early garage rock, this new album is filled with miniature garden like worldview lyrics and loop sounds.
  66. Producer and Music creator Ogawa talks how he has planned the 3rd album and the following albums., and what he aims to create with the 2nd albumness of this current release. During lives, it's not just the girls performing idol-like dances, but the fans are crowdsurfing.
  67. We talk about the Oyasumi Hologram attitude, the music and about the two members with Ogawa.
  68.
  69. --Oyasumi Hologram has it's musical base in alternative rock and the fans are constantly surfing. Seeing a live like that makes you really think this is not a typical idol, but how are the 2 thinking about their work?
  70.
  71. Hachi: Of course, we're primarily doing it like idols. However, creating an impression that's unlike your typical idol is our task. We're not destroying, we're trying to widen the horizon of idol. What do you think, Kanamiru?
  72. Kana: I feel the same!
  73. Everyone laugh
  74. Kana: It's hard to talk about what I think, so I can't really say it straightly. I don't really think about this. Originally, I didn't get this idol thing at all.
  75. Hachi: On the contrary, I didn't know about music and the first time I entered a live house was through OyaHoro. I had heard a few idol songs by AKB48 before, but hearing Dempagumi.inc surprised me on how Idols could have such a variety.
  76. At that time, I was enrolled in an art university and I was feeling an artblock with painting, so I started my idol career to widen my horizons. I viewed idol activities as artwork and to this day, consider it as such.
  77.
  78. --Your 1st album got a big reaction, right?
  79.
  80. Hachi: People around me were relieved. When I told them I was doing underground idol stuff, they were pretty worried. When I told my friends we put out a cd, they'd tell me that they bought it or comment on the music. My parents were also very relieved (laughs)
  81. Kanamiru: I haven't told people close to me about Oyahoro. Friends and parents don't know about it. I have only told about it to 3 people. So i don't know how people around me reacted to it.
  82.
  83. --You don't want them knowing?
  84.
  85. Kana: Not wanting them to know or to say it better, it'd be pain if they started complaining. I'm originally from the countryside, so a job where you are chasing your dreams like this is something my parents and other people wouldn't be accepting so well.
  86. For me, how the fans feel is everything.
  87.
  88. --You said at the april 10th GyuNo Fes event that you don't listen to old fashioned idols or songs.
  89. Hachi: That was an idol festival, right? Of course, we're ok with other idols being there, but the feeling was that we need to stand out from that crowd. Those words stemmed from those feelings.
  90.
  91. --Did you also want to stand out, Kanamiru?
  92.
  93. Kanamiru: Since we're idols, we're not that knowledgeable about everything and I can't go on saying too self-servient things, but I think the current rock bands are boring. I feel like it's cool if they we as idols do rock band -like things, don't you think?
  94. We started with that feeling, so we'd like to compete with rock bands rather than with idols.
  95.
  96. --The other day, you performed with Ahito Inazawa. Number Girl is considered a landmark in alternative rock and seeing you perform with him was surprising.
  97. Kana: I'm not of the number girl generation, but I've watched them a lot on youtube and I can tell you, I was nervous. However, we raised the roof. Everything fell into place, making it the most fun live so far.
  98. He's a person that doesn't really work with idols, so it was really exciting.
  99.
  100. --Oyahoro's producer Ogawa and the 2 members form a triangle that is a one specialty of the group. Mostly because Ogawa is almost always on stage. As if he's a member.
  101.
  102. Kana: I laugh a lot when I see our live footage. It's funny since there's an old dude behind us (laughs)
  103.
  104. Ogawa: If you just push play, it's not really a gig, right? To make it feel like a live, I operate the machines, but when I have free time, i just check twitter.
  105. Kana: eh? That's so shitty!
  106. Ogawa: During drifter or something, you don't really need to make any adjustments. Also, there are not that many needs for idol rehearsals, so I adjust the mixing during the gig.
  107.
  108. --Like Hachigatsuchan said in the beginning, your premise is idol yet you're not necessarily doing idol activities. One that gained you net infamy was your bas tour..
  109. (The bus tour held during March 5&6, 2016 where you went skiing/snowboarding with the members. Participation fee was 40000. Members went in a separate vehicle, the meals were extremely simple, the schedule being tight and other happenings that made the participation fee seem wasted money gained attention on twitter and other places)
  110.
  111. Kanamiru: The bus tour idea came that we wanted to go skiing and snowboarding with everyone by car.
  112. Hachi: We had a schedule filled with lives, so finding a good day for that was hard. We thought we could go with everyone and treat it as work.
  113.
  114. --And that became a huge topic on twitter.
  115.
  116. Ogawa: it even got noticed by the TV stations.
  117.
  118. --The time between the previous one and this release is pretty small, but since when did you start recording this one?
  119.
  120. Kana: 2 and a half months ago
  121.
  122. Ogawa: We recorded it pretty hastily.
  123.
  124. Kana: The recording took only 1 day.
  125.
  126. Hachi: We did it separately, so in total 2 days.
  127.
  128. Kana: it was neurotic..
  129.
  130. --In terms of music, it was a huge change in style, but how did it feel to sing?
  131.
  132. Hachi: Last time we did pretty cheery songs, but this time we went the darker route!
  133. Ogawa: What are you, an elementary schooler (laughs)
  134.
  135. --Hahaha. When you were singing, were there any pointers from Ogawa? This song is about this so you should.. -type of stuff.
  136.
  137. Kana: I was shown a video of Thom Yorke. Then I was suddenly shown a vid where taiko drums were being hit frantically and told "do it like this" and i ended up all "huh?". There aren't people in the idol industry like this, right?
  138.
  139. Hachi: I wasn't shown that video! There wasn't any information at all.
  140.
  141. Ogawa: The first to sing was Kanamiru. The first recordings were pretty hard. I had to create an image, so the next vocalist could match the image. I wanted that Hachi would follow Kanamirus style.
  142.
  143. Kana: It was hard, but I don't dislike creating the groundwork for songs as a vocalist. Listening to Ogawas temporary tracks and considering on including different parts such as breathing heavily etc. was a part of the singing process.
  144.
  145. --So you trial and errored your way through 7 songs in 1 day, that must've been exhausting.
  146.
  147. Kanamiru: Yes it was. Ogawa does music on intuition, so there weren't notes or piano backup. No notes meant that he'd just give you instructions and it was really harsh.
  148.
  149. --In those conditions, Ogawas wishes and the members good points were unified.
  150.
  151. Ogawa: Yes, if that didn't happen, it would not be that interesting.
  152.
  153. --Please tell us what were the songs that left you an impression and the songs that were really hard
  154. Hachi: A really hard one might have been Too young. I couldn't understand the undulations. I recognize them from the flow of the songs, so when i was told that "this is the 7th undulation" i got really pissed.
  155.
  156. --You got pissed?
  157.
  158. Hachi: I wanted him to tell me it straight!. New Romancer was like that, i couldn't get a feel for the timing. We had songs previously, where you knew when you could do stuff, but this time there weren't songs like that.
  159. Little-by-little, I could adjusted to the song but the first time singing had me puzzled.
  160.
  161. --I see. Do you have a favorite song?
  162.
  163. Hachi: I like New Romancer. It's a danceable tune, but it tells a story about people with nothing. It's got a sad feel, so it really got me in the feels. I wanted to put my emotion into the singing, but you can't express facial emotions through song so that part made me like this song a lot.
  164. Ogawas lyrics arent about singing about yourself, so the lyrics could fit anyone. That especially makes New Romancer a great song.
  165.
  166. --What about you Kan amiru?
  167. Kana: The drums for kaerimichi were recorded after the vocals, right?
  168. Ogawa: Vocals were after the drums.
  169. Kana: Right. After hearing the final mix of the song, Kaerimichi felt really good. I really got hooked on Kikuis drumming. We haven't had a female drummer on oyaholo songs previously, so hearing that moved me.
  170. Listening it at home with earphones on, made me cry. It's really good song, so you should listen to it!
  171.
  172. --I'll definitely listen to it! Hearing it without the lyrics was moving, right?
  173.
  174. Kana: Yeah. Even before the vocals came in, I really felt that song. After the vocals were mixed in, hearing the completed track was really awesome. It depends on the listening period and performance place, but every song has great spots and have a world of their own.
  175. I don't really have any specific comments about the songs, but I have those regarding Kaerimichi.
  176.
  177. --Comparing the garage sound of the 1st album, this album has a complete change in sound
  178. Ogawa: I wanted to make an album that sounded like a 1st album, this time I created the album with an idea of making it sound like a 2nd album.
  179.
  180. --Moving from garage to syntheziser-like wet sounds reminds me of the Strokes, but you had different band members in the studio this time?
  181.
  182. Ogawa: Live and recordings are a different beast. Previously, I hadn't given any of the instrument parts, but this time i had many people participating. All except kaerimichi had Kobayashi play the bass. I felt kaerimichi needed a shitty bass sound, so I played that song.
  183. I wanted to make it feel like if idols were performing Rashinban songs.
  184.
  185. --The second song, Too Young, has similarly styled lyrics like New Romancer.
  186.
  187. Ogawa: I wanted to make it an answer song to emerald that we made with Have a Nice Day. I wanted to make a song that was positive in a dystopic setting.
  188.
  189. --Continuing with 11, it is painting a feel of walking next to a ocean in the rain during sunset. In musical sense, it has a modest image.
  190.
  191. Ogawa: There was an image i wanted for this. I had no idea what it would be about, but I had already decided on the title. It took 8 months for the song to come together. It's not something that OyaHolo usually does, it's my peculiarity.
  192.
  193. --You have said this in many interviews, but the effect of the hip hop culture you were a part of in middle school is strong. You can also feel the influence of alternative rock. Do you feel that you are deliberately airing an alternative stance?
  194.
  195. Ogawa: Kanamiru said the same, but the current band culture isn't interesting, so becoming a restructuring force is the intention. However, there are a lot of people attending our gigs who don't feel the band or idol aspect.
  196.
  197. --The 4th song, underwater, is a different viewpoint of Drifter
  198.
  199. Ogawa: My lyrics all have the same world view to them. I write about things that happen in the "miniature garden". I put the thoughts that appear in my head into lyrical form. I imagined a similar situation that was in drifter and wrote it like that.
  200.
  201.
  202. --This is an abstract question, but what kind of place is the "miniature garden"
  203.
  204. Ogawa: I think the closest comparison could be found in the lyrics Takashi Matsumotos song, Kazemachi Roman. The miniature garden is a parallel world. My lyrics aren't about a certain person.
  205. It doesn't tell what to do. That's why there are a lot of people who emphatize with the lyrics and there are a lot of interpretations for them. I don't really understand what I'm writing myself, so it's hard to get a grasp on what is the meaning.
  206.
  207. --Our future has it's basis in a movie.
  208.
  209. Ogawa: That's right. I took the movie to the miniature garden and imagined what a person in there would would think about it. The composition was also mimicing the feel of the movie. The Thom Yorkness that Kanamiru said earlier was this song.
  210.
  211. --Strawberry is an answer to V6's "WA ni natte Odorou". Could you explain?
  212.
  213. Ogawa: There's a phrase, we dance alone, that appears in the lyrics. That was the title of my 3rd solo album. Well, there's not really any meaning to it. That's the only meaning there is, the lyrics and other parts have no meaning at all.
  214.
  215. --It's about dancing alone?
  216.
  217. Ogawa: We all dance alone in our own places. It's got the meaning of living life.
  218.
  219. --That is a theme that you haven't limited to just OyaHolo, but to all your works
  220.
  221. Ogawa: Yeah, being alone is a theme.
  222.
  223. --Musicwise, the bass line reminds of The Raputres "House of Jealous Brothers" and the post punk feel it has.
  224.
  225. Ogawa: It also has the stylings of !!!. That kind of songs aren't really done these days, so I wanted to hear a song with a heavy 4 beat.
  226.
  227. --Finally, we have new romancer. That is song about things left behind. Why do you end up writing lyrics about loneliness?
  228.
  229. Ogawa: It makes me feel happy when I'm writing lyrics.
  230.
  231. --So you don't feel fulfilled with just this?
  232.
  233. Ogawa: Yeah, I just can't stop. I've already done 6 songs for the next album.
  234.
  235. --What do you feel will be the style of the 3rd album.
  236.
  237. Ogawa: I feel like a pop style like Green Days Dookie is the image i'm aiming for. I want to make 15 Stupidly poppy 3 minute songs. However, since I could really do the 2nd album like I wanted it to be, the concept for the next one might change.
  238. I want to raise quality for the fourth one, but we'll have to see.
  239.
  240. --By the way, how many albums do you have planned for?
  241.
  242. Ogawa: I've planned all the way until the fifth, but how long oyahoro will continue is a mystery. I made an album with acoustic guitars only, but how that will be received will decide that.
  243.
  244. --The album title "2" is really simple, but what was the reason for that title?
  245.
  246. Ogawa: I didn't want to give it a name. I wanted to do it like aburadako did (Aburadako was a japanese group that didn't name any of their albums. The fans gave the albums nicknames based on the artwork). However controlling that would've been a pain.
  247.
  248. --Why don't you want to name the album?
  249.
  250. Ogawa: The songs aren't connected to give the album a fitting name. If it was a concept album, a name would be fitting, but since it's not, I felt there's no need for naming it.
  251.
  252. --Do you think about how OyaHoro will be from now on?
  253.
  254. Ogawa: I can't really understand it, but the feel is that these two will continue as the group. I aim to make this so that it'll be their dayjob.
  255. What kind of jobs we can do and what kind of people we can work with is the main priority now.
  256.
  257. --What do you want to do?
  258. Ogawa: I want to be able to do things I want how I please (laughs)
  259.
  260. --(laughs). Historically, many 3rd albums have been called masterpieces, so I look forward for your 3rd one.
  261.
  262. Ogawa: I've felt that there have been many masterpieces put out this year. I want to make acoustic style and jazz set style recordings. I want to start working on our 3rd one this year.
  263. Well, I don't know how far we're able to go (laugh).
