  1. Did Jesus really get tempted the same way we did?
  2.
  3. Lets state some facts.
  4.
  5. Firstly, we can all agree that Jesus is perfect, sinless.
  6. Secondly, we can all agree that Jesus was fully God and fully man. But to what extent was he fully human?
  7.
  8. The bible passage where we often learn that Jesus was fully God and fully man is Matthew 4:1-11 (Jesus is tempted in the wilderness). This is also where we often learn that Jesus felt the same temptations as us and often encourages us to resist temptations as we know it IS possible with Jesus as the example. Let me summarize briefly what happened in Matthew 4:1-11
  9. • Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights
  10. • Jesus was tempted by the devil to turn stone into bread
  11. • Jesus was tempted by the devil to throw himself off the temple so that His angels could same Him
  12. • Jesus was tempted by the devil to bow down to him to inherit the Earth.
  13. • Each time, Jesus quickly resists the temptations thrown at him by the devil
  14.
  15. The lesson from this passage that I often hear is that Jesus went through the same temptations as us and endured through them, just like we ought to do. But was it really the same temptation?
  16.
  17. Now flip to James 1:13-14:
  18. "When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed." (NIV)
  19.
  20. Note that evil desire was a mistranslation and in the original version of the bible, there was no "evil". It was just "... by their own desire and enticed" originally.
  21.
  22. Okay, now lets be clear of how temptation works. There are two stages of temptation that we go through.
  23.
  24. The first stage is when we are presented with the temptation. The second stage is when we choose to fall into temptation or walk away from it.
  25.
  26. For example: we see a cake. That's stage one where we are presented with a temptation. Then we are given a choice - to eat it or to walk away. The action, whether you eat it or not, is what I will call, stage two. In most cases, the first choice (eat it) would be the sin.
  27.
  28. From the passage in James, it says that "[...] each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own (evil) desire and enticed." Look how that the "tempted" is still stage one of temptation. The person still hasn't fallen into temptation (stage two).
  29.
  30. So now back to the passage in Matthew. Was Jesus tempted by himself, meaning he had human desires? Or by Satan, the devil? If it was the second one, this would mean that the teaching of "Jesus is fully God and fully man" is not quite right. He was tempted by the devil, not by himself. Where as the teachings of "Jesus is fully God and fully man" say that he experienced the same temptations as us humans do.
  31.
  32. If that was a bit uneasy to read, I'll try to explain the contradiction I'm having a problem with right now again.
  33. Was Jesus tempted by himself? (like said in James)
  34. Or was Jesus tempted by the devil? (like said in Matthew)
  35.
  36. Before I finish up, I want to rebut a few answers I got when asking this contradiction question to friends.
  37.
  38. "Jesus's temptations were not harmful. Eating bread isn't a sin is it?"
  39. Sure, the first and second temptations you can say weren't sinful. What is wrong with eating bread? What is really that wrong with jumping of the temple. But the third one should stick out as a sin - bowing down to the devil to inherit the world.
  40.
  41. "Jesus resisted the temptations from the devil almost instantly. He did no sin."
  42. That is completely correct, but it's not what I am talking about. He did resist the temptations and that was the right thing to do. That's the stage two part and He chose to walk away. What I am talking about is the stage one part. Did the temptation come from himself? Or from the devil?
  43.
  44. Please take this as just something to think about. I honestly don't want to disprove the bible or anything. I am just asking this as a genuine question. Thank you.
