- Jasper V: 8:13:26 PM
- Hi, thanks for visiting Answer Desk! I'm Jasper V.
- Welcome to Microsoft Answer Desk! My name is Jasper, how may I help you today?
- You: 8:13:41 PM
- Hi Jasper, I'm Jonathon.
- Just a heads up, this is going to be by far the most difficult problem you've ever faced.
- Jasper V: 8:14:03 PM
- Hello Jonathan! How may I assist you today?
- You: 8:14:17 PM
- I'm having trouble with my SmartCard reader.
- You can see my extremely detailed problem description here, on Super User: http://superuser.com/questions/715688/smart-card-errors
- Jasper V: 8:14:57 PM
- I understand how inconvenient that would be, but do not worry, I will be more than willing to help you resolve the concern.
- You: 8:15:26 PM
- TL;DR version: It doesn't work on my primary system. I see errors in the system log that indicate a hardware problem.
- Jasper V: 8:15:30 PM
- May I know when did you start having this issue?
- May I know what version of windows are you using?
- You: 8:15:57 PM
- Windows 7 Pro
- x64
- Jasper V: 8:16:12 PM
- Did you make any changes or installed something on your computer before the issue start to happen?
- You: 8:16:15 PM
- Sorry, Windows 7 Ultimate
- Jasper V: 8:16:25 PM
- Thank you for that information. Let me check that for you real quick.
- You: 8:16:34 PM
- Unfortunately no, I can't make any correlations to any other hardware/software changes.
- This has been going on for a while.
- However, it is definitely not a hardware problem, because I have passed-through the USB device to a Windows 7 VirtualBox VM (on the same machine) and it works just fine for that VM!
- Jasper V: 8:18:01 PM
- Alright, have you tried this following steps?
- Connect the smart card reader to your computer, if necessary.
- Insert your smart card into the smart card reader.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
- At the logon screen, click Switch User.
- Click the smart card icon, type your PIN, and then press Enter.
- You: 8:19:49 PM
- Those directions are irrelevant. A) I don't have the option to type my PIN there, because I'm not using the SmartCard for Windows log-on. B) If you check out that Super User link, you'll see that the problem is "lower".
- I feel like I need to talk to someone intimately familiar with the WudfUsbccid driver
- Jasper V: 8:21:11 PM
- Have you updated your driver?
- You: 8:21:32 PM
- I'm using the driver that is included with Windows 7.
- And I'm up-to-date with Windows updates.
- Jasper V: 8:22:12 PM
- What specific errors do you receive?
- You: 8:22:34 PM
- http://superuser.com/questions/715688/smart-card-errors
- There are detailed error messages and screenshots there.
- Jasper V: 8:23:00 PM
- That is the error you received?
- You: 8:23:24 PM
- No, that is the detailed post that I wrote back in February about the problem.
- Jasper V: 8:23:25 PM
- Which of those errors do you received from the link you've given to me?
- Okay.
- You: 8:23:35 PM
- That entire post is mine.
- "Smart Card Reader 'SCM Microsystems SCR33xx v2.0 USB SC Reader 0' rejected
- IOCTL TRANSMIT: Incorrect function. If this error persists, your smart card
- or reader may not be functioning correctly."
- Jasper V: 8:24:08 PM
- Have you tried plugging your smart card reader to another PC?
- You: 8:24:19 PM
- Yes. It works on my Laptop just fine.
- And again, if I pass-through the USB device to a Windows 7 VirtualBox VM, it works correctly for the VM.
- Jasper V: 8:24:57 PM
- Did you tried uninstalling the Smart card reader application?
- You: 8:25:00 PM
- I even purchased a new smart card reader, and recently was given a new smart card reader.
- There is no smart card reader application.
- I'm only using all of the built-in Windows features.
- From that post: "This setup used to work just fine. When I would insert my CAC, my certificates would immediately propagate to the certificate store (as evidenced by Certificate Manage, certmgr.msc), and I could log on to websites that required a CAC for access."
- Jasper V: 8:27:42 PM
- Jonathan, just to set your expectations that I'll be doing the basic troubleshooting. However, if the issue is more complex, I highly recommend to use Advanced Tools for us to dig dipper of what the cause of the problem. And this will fall in our paid support, would that be alright with you?
- You: 8:29:04 PM
- No, thank you. I am capable of the basic troubleshooting. I have already narrowed the problem down much further than a user should be expected to, as evidenced by that post.
- I will eventually figure out what the problem is, even if I have to kernel-mode debug my system.
- Jasper V: 8:30:00 PM
- Alright, I understand.
- As of now you have two card readers, am I right?
- You: 8:30:53 PM
- Obviously Microsoft can't start putting their OS developers on the line for doing tech support... but it's just a shame that I have to waste this much time troubleshooting a problem, when the CCID driver team would be able to provide immense insight.
- ...Unfortunately no, I had to return the one, after it was RMA'd for being faulty.
- Jasper V: 8:32:27 PM
- Okay, can you please re-check the driver if it is working properly?
- You: 8:32:42 PM
- Yes, I just uninstalled the driver and re-connected the reader.
- I'm going to verify that the same messages appear in the event log.
- Jasper V: 8:33:01 PM
- You might be infected with malware/virus that blocks the driver.
- To inform you Jonathan, that there are strong malwares/viruses that cannot be detected and removed by pre-installed anti-virus application.
- You: 8:34:33 PM
- The only thing I haven't done yet, is remove VirtualBox, to see if somehow their generic USB filter driver is interfering. I highly doubt this is the case though, because I had VirtualBox before I had the smart card. And the smart card used to work.
- Jasper V: 8:35:39 PM
- Your welcome, Okay can you try uninstalling your virtual box?
- Let's see if that really interferes the driver.
- You: 8:37:09 PM
- Haha, well this time, I didn't get the same errors. But rather, IE crashed.

- Okay, I’d be willing to connect to your computer and see the bigger picture of the issue that you described to me so I may be able to isolate and have a direct approach on resolving it.
- You: 8:39:11 PM
- I'm sorry, I'm not comfortable with that. I assure you, I can easily provide any additional information you require.
- Jasper V: 8:40:33 PM
- If that's the case I can provide your online self-help link.
- You: 8:41:52 PM
- Well this is annoying (my situation, not your help). Although I am certain I re-installed the CCID driver several times in the past, it seems that (of course), this time, when I put my smart card in, the certificates propagated to the certificate store correctly. I'm not seeing the same errors in the system log.
- Jasper V: 8:42:19 PM
- That
- You: 8:42:26 PM
- However, I can't test my Webmail access (which requires the smart card), because F'ing IE is crashing.
- Jasper V: 8:42:31 PM
- That's great Jonathan.
- You: 8:43:05 PM
- My other option is to VPN in, and start a remote desktop session. However, due to settings outside my control, that will kill my connection to this chat session.
- Jasper V: 8:43:28 PM
- Try to reset your IE.
- You: 8:44:01 PM
- Remind me how to do that? I try to avoid IE at all costs, and don't remember how.
- My organization also supports Firefox (but not Chrome), so I'm installing that now.
- Jasper V: 8:46:29 PM
- Okay, for a minute.
- Click
- Click on that link and follow the instructions.
- You: 8:47:54 PM
- Uninstalling it now...
- Jasper V: 8:50:22 PM
- You can follow the instructions of the link that I've provided, since we cannot establish remote session.
- Before I let you go, Is there anything else I can help you with today?
- You: 8:52:22 PM
- Well it worked, but there is definitely an outstanding issue. When I insert my Smart Card, 3 certificates should propagate. This time, all 3 did. When less than 3 do, I know it doesn't work. It just depends on the phase of the moon, I suppose.
- I'll continue to investigate on my own.
- I do think that there is some underlying driver issue/conflict that **someone** somewhere would love to know about.
- Jasper V: 8:53:28 PM
- Okay, Thank you for contacting Microsoft Answer Desk. Happy New Year in advance!
- You: 8:53:35 PM
- If it is even remotely within your power, I'd love for the WUDF / CCID driver teams to at least be sent this link, please?
