  1. The walls of the Vallite palace were ancient, Ephraim noted as he strode down the hall. Directions from Lady Azura were almost lost on the Renais King as the winding labyrinth of centuries old marble were near impossible to navigate. But thankfully he found the King's quarters eventually, even without the help of any residents. The castle had only recently been reclaimed and was still mostly empty of servants or décor.
  2.
  3. He opened the much more modern looking door soundlessly. Without any further invitation he simply let himself in, skeptical if his husband was even present. His suspicions were laid to rest when he saw a mass of elegant robes and white fluffy hair hunched over a desk. Papers upon papers littered the room from Kamui's desk all the way to the door in uneven stacks and folders. Several books written in a peculiar dialect were also strewn across the office portion of the quarters, only a few stray sheets had dared to cross from marble to the carpeted floor of the bedchamber.
  4.
  5. Ephraim sighed, careful not to step on anything as he tried to move towards Kamui. He wasn't really one to throw stones in this situation but this was twice as messy as his own quarters, and very unlike Kamui who would at least have that ever diligent, yet somewhat eerie butler of his to straighten things out. Gently he shook Kamui's shoulder in an effort to wake him without surprising him. Kamui stirred in his sleep, eyes opening calmly (or perhaps he was just still tired) only when Ephraim moved some of his hair from obstructing his face. Though after getting a good look at him, Ephraim's smile faltered.
  6.
  7. He looked like he hadn't gotten any real sleep in days as evident by the dark bags staining his otherwise porcelain skin. His hair was even more of a mess than usual and his eyes were puffy and red, what could safely be assumed to be from lack of sleep, or perhaps crying.
  8.
  9. "Kamui..."
  10.
  11. Kamui perked up at the sound of Ephraim's voice and sluggishly rose from his desk. He flashed a tired smile before wrapping his arms around the lancer. "Ephraim, it's so good to see you."
  12.
  13. Ephraim returned the gesture. With Kamui in his arms, just for a moment he'd forgotten why he was so distracted. The embrace was ended by Ephraim cupping Kamui's tired face in his hands, examining it more closely.
  14.
  15. "You look like hell."
  16.
  17. "Gee, thanks." Kamui responded sarcastically, but he knew Ephraim was probably right. He certainly didn't feel his best.
  18.
  19. "You seriously need some sleep." He glanced to the desk with the drool stained papers and shook his head. "You know. In a bed. Like the one 10 feet away from you."
  20.
  21. "I've gotten plenty of sleep. I've taken quite a few naps since my coronation, and a lot of them were on the bed. I just have a lot of work to do..." Kamui's voice trailed off into a yawn which cemented Ephraim's resolve to get him rested. If he won't listen to anyone here, he'd certainly consider the words of his own husband.
  22.
  23. "Er, Kamui, you know that was two weeks ago, right...?" Now Ephraim was really concerned.
  24.
  25. "Oh. I suppose so... Honestly I kind of lost track of time... But I'll get some sleep soon. Once I'm finished drafting these forms and sign a few more policies on-- Whoa! What are you--?"
  26.
  27. Before Kamui had time to finish Ephraim had already swept him off his feet and into his arms. Kamui needed someone to keep him from working himself to death.
  28.
  29. "Sorry, but I've made up my mind," Ephraim declared, nonchalantly carrying Kamui to his bed. "For today you're no longer King Kamui of Valla, but instead King Kamui of The Bedsheets. Your reign begins now."
  30.
  31. After setting him gently on the bed, Ephraim found himself stuck in Kamui's arms which had previously tangled themselves around his neck.
  32.
  33. "Fine... but I don't want your visit to go to waste. Will you sleep with me...? You hardly ever get to spend time with me and I'm sure you're in no hurry to get back to Renais just yet..." Kamui released Ephraim but couldn't quite meet his eyes. It'd taken the lancer a moment to figure it out but when he did he was a bit proud at how perceptive he'd become of his husband's feelings.
  34.
  35. Kamui missed him so much. Ephraim couldn't help but smile at the small revelation, happy that maybe their roles hadn't completely strained their marriage. With the distance between them and their own duties to their respective countries, at times their relationship hardly felt like that of a married couple. But for now, Ephraim could forget that notion, if just for the day.
  36.
  37. "Of course. I wouldn't just put you to bed and be on my way! I came here to spend time with you." Kamui smiled at Ephraim's words and the King of Renais felt something warm in his chest, like he felt when they were bumbling teenagers still trying to figure the whole "love" thing out.
  38.
  39. "And honestly, I'm pretty exhausted myself..." With that confession he'd kicked off his boots to join Kamui, hopping unceremoniously beside him and pulling him close into his arms. "I mean sure Eirika and her wife help out a lot, but the paperwork... Now that's a chore. And its always about boring, little things! Do they really need a king to tell them which trade routes to bring spices through?"
  40.
  41. Kamui laughed as he cuddled close to Ephraim, nuzzling his head into his husband's shoulder. "It's certainly not easy. How was Eirika's wedding? I'm still sad I didn't get to attend or meet her bride."
  42.
  43. Ephraim shook his head and laughed, "It went well. It was a huge event not only for our countries but in general. Tana was very keen on having a big, extravagant ceremony. It was a headache an hour in for me. Too many people and handshakes. I wish they'd had a smaller one like ours, but I'm glad they were happy."
  44.
  45. Kamui smiled and nodded, "Good for them. Though I do hope I have time for a visit to Renais in the near future. I really miss it."
  46.
  47. "You're always welcome. You are a member of the royal family, after all. I always get asked when to expect you at the castle. You're very much missed, you know?"
  48.
  49. With a content sigh Kamui hummed in acknowledgement, his eyelids getting heavy.
  50.
  51. "I... I miss you too. I mean, that goes without saying, I suppose but... I really, really miss you."
  52.
  53. Kamui took notice of Ephraim's frown and placed a kiss against his lips. Ephraim has no hesitation in kissing him back, letting a hand caress Kamui's cheek tenderly. He'd missed the feel of Kamui's lips against his own and the small, cute sounds he'd make when they kissed. Having Kamui in his arms was almost nostalgic in a way.
  54.
  55. "I wish I could be here for you more... To help ease the burden and be with you always." Ephraim sighed against Kamui's lips, pressing against them and deepening the kiss with a swipe of his tongue. Their legs were tangled together under the blankets and Kamui can't recall himself being this relaxed in months.
  56.
  57. "I'll be fine. I'm not alone, I have Azura and my brothers help out a lot too. Elise especially visits me a lot. Please, don't worry too much, alright?"
  58.
  59. Tightening the embrace, Ephraim sighs. "Alright... but please take care of yourself. I don't know what I'd do if something were to..."
  60.
  61. "It's unlike you to worry so much, dearest." Kamui strokes Ephraim's face comfortingly. Its a small gesture but it soothes Ephraim more than anything else. But he's still not content.
  62.
  63. "Promise me. Please, Kamui."
  64.
  65. Kamui looks at Ephraim's face, soft with worry and longing. He couldn't refuse, even if he wanted to.
  66.
  67. "I promise. So please, don't look so sad. It doesn't suit you."
  68.
  69. Ephraim finds Kamui's reassuring smile to be contagious and he nods in agreement. "I suppose it doesn't, but the bags under your eyes don't suit you either. I think its time we got some well deserved rest, hm?"
  70.
  71. With that, the unusual but nevertheless happy couple fell asleep content, even if only temporarily.
