  1. My husband, he’s the odd man out
  2. When young, they called him fool
  3. He asked about the obvious
  4. As stubborn as a mule
  5.
  6. They thought him slow, they thought him dim
  7. They did not think him brave
  8. For though he knew not what fear was
  9. He never could behave!
  10.
  11. His brother, the town’s golden boy
  12. Wanted to teach him truth
  13. He’d dress up like a ghost, and then
  14. Jump out to scare the youth!
  15.
  16. He was surprised, but never scared
  17. My to-be love lashed out
  18. His brother tumbled down the stairs
  19. His leg no longer stout
  20.
  21. That gentle boy was cast away
  22. He journeyed far and wide
  23. He asked the owner of an inn
  24. Where he could find a guide.
  25.
  26. He wanted to find shiver-mes
  27. The heebie jeebies, too.
  28. There was a challenge the king set
  29. The keeper thought might do.
  30.
  31. Three nights in castle plagued with ghouls
  32. Bringing along three things
  33. The winner’d get a princess fair
  34. And castle’s gold and rings
  35.
  36. A fire, lathe, and cutting board
  37. Including, too, the knife
  38. That’s what that fearless, handsome lad
  39. Used to make me his wife!
  40.
  41. The first night, voices moaned of cold
  42. The young man called them dumb
  43. He had a nice warm fire set
  44. If only they would come
  45.
  46. Two cats lept out, as black as sin
  47. And asked him for a game
  48. He tricked them to the cutting board
  49. Then used his knife to maim
  50.
  51. The room filled up with cats and dogs
  52. He fought off every one
  53. When morning came he was unharmed
  54. He had the first night won!
  55.
  56. The second night brought half a man
  57. The boy was not afraid
  58. He called up for the second half
  59. And gave it to the shade
  60.
  61. More dead men came, but did not fight
  62. They wanted just to bowl
  63. He took his lathe and carved their skulls
  64. So they would better roll
  65.
  66. They bowled all night with dead men’s legs
  67. The boy had so much fun
  68. When morning came, he was still there
  69. The second night was won!
  70.
  71. On the last night he heard a noise
  72. Men brought a coffin in
  73. The youth, distraught, warmed the corpse up
  74. It looked like his cousin
  75.
  76. The carcass woke, it was confused
  77. And tried to choke the lad
  78. He closed it up inside its box
  79. The coffin rocked like mad
  80.
  81. The boy sat down atop the lid
  82. He did not let it up
  83. The dead thing yelled and vowed to him
  84. Upon his bones it’d sup
  85.
  86. Finally it gave and made a deal
  87. It’d lead him to the gold
  88. The boy agreed and lept aside
  89. The corpse did as it told.
  90.
  91. A richer man, but still not scared
  92. He waited for the sun
  93. The morning came and he emerged
  94. The king’s challenge was won!
  95.
  96. My husband now, of thirty years
  97. He longs for shivers still
  98. I love him dear, but I won’t lie
  99. I’m sick of all that swill
  100.
  101. If you’ll excuse me for a bit
  102. My husband is in bed
  103. I have a glass of ice water
  104. To pour upon his head!
